Pay attention to hiking difficulty
If you are going out for a hike, pay attention to maps and trail markers. You will find that most hiking trails are marked and tell you exactly how long they’ll be. In addition to this, they may also have more information about the trail, such as the difficulty or what you can expect. If you’re not sure how difficult the trail is, do some research ahead of time. Aim for hiking trails that are for beginners or have a lower difficulty to get you started.
Stick to shorter hikes in the beginning
If you’re not used to hiking, then a longer hike is not recommended. Instead, stick to shorter trails that are a mile or two or even less. There are plenty of hiking trails with scenic views that are less than a mile both ways! As you get used to hiking the trails, you can slowly work up to some of the longer and more intense hikes.
Be sure to wear the right shoes to protect your feet
Footwear is essential when you’re hiking. While you may be able to walk around Disney World in your flip flops, you need proper footwear for hiking. The ground isn’t paved and will have rocks and may even require a little climbing. Having on close-toed shoes with plenty of arch support will ensure that your feet don’t get hurt during your hike and that you won’t develop blisters. Also, wearing wool socks will keep your feet dry and much more comfortable than cotton socks.
Stock up on food and water before your trip– Especially water
It’s very easy to become dehydrated while hiking, especially when it’s hot out. Be sure to pack plenty of nutritious food and water with you so that you can have it handy while you’re hiking. Just because it says the hike only takes a mile doesn’t mean it won’t take you hours to complete it. It’s better to bring plenty with you in case you are wrong, so you don’t have to go without lunch or water.
Wear plenty of sunscreen
You will be outdoors, which means the sun will still find its way to you. Make sure that you are wearing sun protection and that you reapply often. Just because there are a lot of trees or you’re hiking on a cloudy day doesn’t mean you can’t get burnt. Make sure to also pay attention to your clothing too. Hats and long pants can help you protect yourself from the sun as well.
You don’t have to be a hiking expert to be able to start hiking! If you follow these tips, you’ll be ready to hit the trails before you know it!
