Hollywood Studios Characters Guide: Every Character You Can Meet, See, and Experience

Hollywood Studios characters

Meet every Disney character at Hollywood Studios! Discover character dining, Star Wars encounters, Pixar friends, Fantasmic, shows, and more.

Estimated reading time: 28 minutes

Hollywood Studios may not have as many characters as Magic Kingdom or EPCOT, but what it lacks in quantity, it more than makes up for with unforgettable experiences.

This is the only Disney World park where you can exchange suspicious looks with Stormtroopers, chat with the Mandalorian, laugh with Edna Mode, and then end your evening watching dozens of Disney heroes and villains come together during Fantasmic!

Over the years, this park has changed more than any other when it comes to character experiences. My daughter met Sofia the First here back in 2017, and she proudly completed Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple before that experience retired. Since then, the reimagined Walt Disney Studios area has been completely reimagined, Disney Junior offerings have evolved, Star Wars experiences have shifted, and entirely new entertainment has arrived.

That’s part of what makes Hollywood Studios so much fun. Every visit feels a little different.

Whether your family loves Pixar, Star Wars, Disney Princesses, Disney Junior, or the classic Disney characters, here’s where to find every character experience currently available at Hollywood Studios.

If you’re planning to visit more than one park, don’t miss my complete Disney World Characters Guide, where I cover every character you can meet, see, or experience across all four theme parks.

Hollywood Studios Character Dining

If meeting Disney characters is one of your family’s top priorities, Hollywood & Vine is the easiest way to meet several favorites without spending part of your day standing in line.

It’s also the only character dining experience at Hollywood Studios, making it a popular reservation for families with younger children.

Unlike some Disney restaurants that feature the same characters year-round, Hollywood & Vine celebrates Minnie’s Seasonal Dining during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The decorations, music, and even the characters’ outfits change throughout the year, giving each season its own unique atmosphere.

Depending on when you visit, you may find Minnie and her friends dressed in bright spring colors, festive Halloween costumes, or holiday attire. It’s a fun little detail that makes repeat visits feel different from one another.

One thing I really appreciate about Hollywood & Vine is that you aren’t rushed through the experience. Throughout your meal, Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, and their friends make their way around the restaurant, stopping at every table for hugs, photos, and autographs. Since the characters come to you, everyone can relax and enjoy the meal instead of worrying about finding the next meet-and-greet.

For families with younger kids—or anyone who simply loves the classic Disney characters—it’s a fun way to begin your Hollywood Studios day.

Is Hollywood & Vine Worth It?

For character fans, I think the answer is yes.

Hollywood Studios simply doesn’t have as many dedicated meet-and-greet locations as Magic Kingdom or EPCOT. By eating one meal at Hollywood & Vine, you can meet several popular Disney characters before you’ve even started exploring the park.

That’s a pretty good value if your goal is maximizing character experiences.

The food is served buffet-style with plenty of options for both adults and kids. I wouldn’t rank it among my very favorite Disney restaurants based solely on the food, but that’s not really why most families book this reservation.

The characters are the main event.

If your kids light up every time Mickey or Minnie walks into the room—or you’re hoping to collect several autographs without spending a big chunk of your day in line—Hollywood & Vine is well worth considering.

If Hollywood & Vine isn’t quite the right fit for your family, another fun table service option is the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant, where you’ll enjoy classic drive-in movie clips while dining inside vintage cars.

Hollywood Studios Characters Are Always Changing

One thing I’ve learned after visiting Hollywood Studios for years is that no Disney park changes its character lineup more often than this one.

Back in 2017, my daughter met Sofia the First here, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. She also completed Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple, proudly facing Darth Vader before that experience eventually retired.

Neither of those experiences exists today.

Since then, the reimagined Walt Disney Studios area is pretty much completely new, Disney Junior offerings have evolved, Star Wars experiences have shifted, and entirely new entertainment has taken their place.

Honestly, I think that’s part of the charm.

Every time we return, there’s something new to discover.

Because Disney regularly updates entertainment and character offerings here, I always recommend checking the My Disney Experience app before your visit. This guide reflects the current lineup, but don’t be surprised if Disney introduces a new character—or brings back an old favorite—in the future.

Permanent Character Meet-and-Greets

Compared to Magic Kingdom or EPCOT, Hollywood Studios doesn’t have nearly as many permanent character meet-and-greet locations. Instead, Disney has leaned into immersive experiences, roaming characters, and live entertainment.

Whether you’re giving Olaf a warm hug, laughing with Edna Mode, or exploring one of Hollywood Studios’ newest family-friendly experiences, these are some of the character highlights you can count on finding during most visits.

Meet Olaf at Celebrity Spotlight

If your family loves Frozen, Olaf is one of the easiest characters to meet anywhere in Walt Disney World.

Located inside Celebrity Spotlight, this indoor meet-and-greet is air-conditioned, easy to find, and usually moves at a steady pace. That makes it a great option if you have younger kids—or if everyone simply needs a break from the Florida heat.

Olaf is exactly what you’d expect him to be: cheerful, funny, and always excited to meet new friends. He may dream about warm hugs and summertime, but thankfully the air conditioning keeps him perfectly happy inside his Hollywood Studios home.

One nice bonus is that Olaf is the only permanent Frozen character meet-and-greet at Hollywood Studios. If you aren’t planning to spend much time at EPCOT, this is an easy way to make one Frozen fan very happy.

The Magic of Disney Animation

If you’ve visited Hollywood Studios over the years, this area of the park has probably changed more than any other.

When my family visited back in 2017, this corner of the park was home to experiences like Sofia the First, Disney Junior meet-and-greets, and Star Wars Launch Bay. Since then, Disney has completely reimagined the area, replacing many of those offerings with new attractions and entertainment.

Today, The Magic of Disney Animation celebrates the creative process behind Disney’s animated films through an interactive experience that invites guests inside the world of Disney animation.

While the attraction itself isn’t a traditional character meet-and-greet, it’s become the centerpiece of an area that’s still one of the best places in Hollywood Studios for younger Disney fans.

Just outside, you’ll find Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!, an energetic stage show where younger guests can sing, dance, and interact with Mickey Mouse and his Disney Jr. friends. Depending on the season, Disney may also offer additional character experiences nearby, making this one of the park’s more dynamic areas.

Because Hollywood Studios changes its entertainment lineup fairly often, I always recommend checking the My Disney Experience app before your visit to see which characters, shows, and experiences are available during your trip.

Meet Edna Mode

If I had to choose the funniest character meet-and-greet in Hollywood Studios, Edna Mode would probably win.

She’s tiny in stature but absolutely larger than life.

Fans of The Incredibles already know her iconic personality, and Disney’s performers do an incredible job bringing that attitude to life. She loves inspecting guests’ outfits, striking dramatic poses, and reminding everyone of her most famous fashion rule:

“No capes!”

Even people who normally skip character meet-and-greets often walk away talking about this one.

It’s also refreshingly different from meeting a princess or one of the classic Disney characters. Instead of simply posing for a photo, the interaction feels more like you’re stepping into one of Edna’s legendary design consultations.

If you’re an Incredibles fan, don’t miss it.

Scheduled Character Meet-and-Greets

Not every character at Hollywood Studios has a permanent home.

Throughout the day, Disney schedules appearances for several popular characters in different areas of the park. Some have designated locations, while others appear at set times that can vary from day to day.

The easiest way to keep track of these opportunities is by checking the My Disney Experience app once you arrive. It’s not unusual for appearance times to change, and Disney occasionally rotates characters throughout the year.

If you’re flexible with your schedule, these meet-and-greets can lead to some of the most memorable moments of your day.

Pixar Plaza

If your family loves The Incredibles, Pixar Plaza is the place to be.

This area frequently features superhero favorites like:

  • Mr. Incredible
  • Elastigirl
  • Frozone

Unlike some traditional character greetings, these interactions often feel energetic and playful. Don’t be surprised if you’re encouraged to strike your best superhero pose before the photographer snaps your picture.

Since appearances are scheduled throughout the day, check the My Disney Experience app for current times before heading over.

Toy Story Land

Toy Story Land isn’t just home to two of the park’s most popular attractions—it’s also one of the best places to meet Andy’s favorite toys.

Depending on the day’s schedule, you can often meet:

  • Woody
  • Buzz Lightyear
  • Jessie

These characters fit perfectly with the oversized toy theme of the land, and their playful personalities make every interaction feel like you’ve stepped into Andy’s backyard.

One tip: Toy Story Land offers very little shade, so if character photos are high on your priority list, try to visit earlier in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are a little more comfortable.

If you’re spending time in Toy Story Land meeting Woody, Buzz, and Jessie, it’s also worth considering a meal at Roundup Rodeo BBQ, one of the park’s newest table service restaurants.

Darth Vader

Few character encounters at Walt Disney World are as intimidating—in the best possible way—as meeting Darth Vader.

Now located near the entrance to Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, this experience is less about hugs and smiles and more about stepping into the Star Wars universe.

Vader rarely says much, but he doesn’t have to. Between his commanding presence, unmistakable breathing, and piercing stare, the interaction feels surprisingly authentic.

Whether you’re a lifelong Star Wars fan or introducing your kids to the galaxy far, far away, this is one of the most memorable villain meet-and-greets anywhere at Disney World.

Be sure to check the My Disney Experience app on the day of your visit, as appearance times are scheduled throughout the day.

Characters Near the Chinese Theatre

One of my favorite parts of Hollywood Studios is that you never quite know who you might run into near the Chinese Theatre.

Unlike dedicated meet-and-greet locations, these scheduled appearances often rotate throughout the year, which makes them feel a little more magical.

Disney rotates these appearances regularly and recently they have included:

  • Chip and Dale
  • Mary Poppins
  • Bert
  • the penguins from Mary Poppins
  • Pinocchio
  • Jiminy Cricket

This is one of those areas where it pays to slow down instead of rushing to your next Lightning Lane. Sometimes you’ll round a corner and discover a favorite character with a surprisingly short line.

Roaming Characters

One of the things that makes Hollywood Studios feel different from the other Disney parks is that not every character is waiting in a designated meet-and-greet location.

Some of the park’s most memorable interactions happen completely by surprise.

You might turn a corner and find Stormtroopers questioning guests, Chewbacca wandering Black Spire Outpost, or the Mandalorian making his way through Galaxy’s Edge with Grogu in tow. These encounters often feel less like standing in line for a photo and more like stepping into a movie.

If you enjoy those unexpected moments that Disney does so well, slow down and keep your eyes open. You never know who might be around the next corner.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Galaxy’s Edge isn’t just themed to Star Wars—it feels alive because the characters are part of the world around you.

Rather than simply posing for pictures, many of them interact naturally with guests while continuing their missions throughout Black Spire Outpost.

Stormtroopers

The First Order Stormtroopers are probably the roaming characters you’re most likely to encounter.

They regularly patrol the marketplace and surrounding streets, questioning visitors, inspecting suspicious activity, and reminding everyone that the First Order is always watching.

Don’t be surprised if they stop to ask where your loyalties lie—or if they jokingly recruit someone in your group.

They’re some of the most entertaining characters in Walt Disney World simply because every interaction is different.

Kylo Ren

Kylo Ren occasionally appears with First Order personnel, bringing a much more serious presence to Galaxy’s Edge.

He rarely breaks character, making every interaction feel surprisingly authentic. Even if you don’t stop for a photo, it’s worth watching him interact with other guests.

Rey

On the opposite side of the conflict, Rey sometimes appears near the Resistance encampment.

She often takes time to encourage young recruits and chat with aspiring Resistance members before continuing on her mission.

Like many of the Galaxy’s Edge characters, she’s completely immersed in the story, making the land feel more like a living movie set than a theme park.

Chewbacca

Chewbacca may not speak English, but somehow everyone understands him.

He’s one of the friendliest Star Wars characters in the park and always seems genuinely excited to greet fellow Rebels. Kids especially love his playful personality.

Even if you’re not a huge Star Wars fan, it’s hard not to smile when Chewie stops to acknowledge a young visitor.

The Mandalorian and Grogu

One of the newest and most popular additions to Galaxy’s Edge is the Mandalorian traveling with Grogu.

This has quickly become one of the most sought-after character encounters in Hollywood Studios.

Rather than standing in one place, they often move naturally through Black Spire Outpost, creating an experience that feels immersive instead of staged. Sometimes you’ll be able to stop for a quick photo, while other times it’s more fun to simply watch them interact with guests as they move through Black Spire Outpost. If you happen to catch them during your visit, don’t rush the moment. Watching them interact with guests is almost as much fun as snapping a photo.

If your family loves Star Wars, don’t stop with the characters. Building your own astromech at Droid Depot is one of the most immersive experiences in Galaxy’s Edge and pairs perfectly with a day spent exploring Black Spire Outpost.

Around Echo Lake and Grand Avenue

Not every roaming character is part of the Star Wars universe.

Throughout the day, Disney occasionally schedules appearances from classic favorites around Echo Lake and Grand Avenue.

Depending on the season and current entertainment schedule, you may spot characters like Pluto, Goofy, Max, and other familiar Disney friends often appear in this area depending on the season.

These appearances can change over time, which makes them feel like fun little surprises rather than attractions you have to plan your day around.

One Last Tip

Hollywood Studios probably rewards flexibility more than any other Disney park.

Unlike Magic Kingdom, where you can plan many of your character experiences in advance, some of the best moments here happen unexpectedly. A Stormtrooper may stop to question your family. Chewbacca might wave to your kids as he walks by. You could even discover a favorite character with almost no wait because you happened to be in the right place at the right time.

That’s part of the magic.

If you leave a little room in your schedule instead of rushing from attraction to attraction, Hollywood Studios often rewards you with those spontaneous Disney moments that become some of your favorite vacation memories.

Characters in Attractions and Shows

Not every Disney character experience involves standing in line for a hug or autograph.

In fact, some of my favorite character moments at Hollywood Studios happen while I’m watching a live show or riding an attraction. Whether you’re racing through Andy’s backyard, singing along with Anna and Elsa, or watching Mickey battle Disney villains, you’ll spend the day surrounded by familiar faces.

Hollywood Studios is home to some of the best live entertainment at Walt Disney World. If you’re deciding which performances deserve a spot in your itinerary, check out my guide to the best shows at Hollywood Studios.

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway

If there’s one attraction that perfectly captures the spirit of classic Disney animation, it’s Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.

Instead of simply following Mickey and Minnie on another adventure, you’re pulled into the colorful world of the modern Mickey Mouse cartoons, where trains can dance, tornadoes have personalities, and absolutely anything can happen.

Along the way you’ll encounter:

  • Mickey Mouse
  • Minnie Mouse
  • Goofy
  • Donald Duck
  • Daisy Duck
  • Pluto

Even after riding it multiple times, I still catch little details that I missed before.

Toy Story Mania!

Toy Story Mania! feels like you’ve been shrunk down to the size of one of Andy’s toys.

The queue alone is worth paying attention to, with oversized board games, crayons, toys, and plenty of familiar Toy Story friends surrounding you before the competition even begins.

Throughout the attraction you’ll see favorites like Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Rex, Hamm, and the Green Army Men as they cheer you on from one midway game to the next.

Whether you’re trying to beat your family’s high score or simply enjoying the incredible theming, it’s one of the most character-filled attractions in the park.

Slinky Dog Dash

Slinky Dog Dash roller coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, one of the most popular Lightning Lane rides at Walt Disney World

While Slinky Dog Dash isn’t a traditional character experience, it’s impossible to separate the attraction from the Toy Story characters that inspired it.

As you race through Andy’s backyard, you’ll spot Slinky Dog leading the adventure while Jessie, Rex, Wheezy, and other familiar toys help bring the story to life.

It’s another reminder that Disney doesn’t always need face-to-face character interactions to make you feel immersed in your favorite movies.

Several of these characters also appear in some of the park’s most popular attractions. If you’re planning your day, be sure to read my guide to the best rides at Hollywood Studios to see which attractions are worth prioritizing.

The Muppets Take Over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster

One of the newest additions to Hollywood Studios is the reimagined Muppets-themed Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, giving guests another fun way to experience Disney characters without standing in a meet-and-greet line.

While the attraction still delivers the same high-speed thrills that coaster fans have loved for years, the story now features Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Animal, Fozzie Bear, and the rest of the Muppet gang in a hilarious new adventure that’s packed with the humor and chaos you’d expect from the Muppets.

Whether you’ve loved the Muppets for decades or you’re introducing them to a new generation, it’s another reminder that some of the best character experiences at Hollywood Studios happen while you’re riding the attractions—not just meeting the characters face-to-face.

Green Army Drum Corps

If you suddenly hear energetic drumming echoing through Toy Story Land, follow the sound.

The Green Army Drum Corps combines music, comedy, and audience participation into one of the most entertaining street performances at Hollywood Studios.

Technically they’re performers rather than a traditional character meet-and-greet, but they interact with guests so much that they absolutely deserve a place in this guide.

If you happen to catch one of their performances, stop and watch for a few minutes. They’re a lot of fun.

Frozen Sing-Along Celebration

Don’t let the words “sing-along” fool you.

Yes, you’ll hear all of your favorite songs from Frozen, but this show is just as entertaining for adults thanks to the hilarious Royal Historians who somehow manage to tell the story while making the entire audience laugh.

Throughout the performance you’ll see:

  • Anna
  • Elsa
  • Kristoff
  • Olaf

And by the time “Let It Go” begins, don’t be surprised if the entire theater is singing together.

Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage

This longtime Hollywood Studios favorite has been entertaining guests for decades, and it’s still one of the best Broadway-style productions at Walt Disney World.

Belle, Beast, Gaston, Lumière, Mrs. Potts, and several other beloved characters help recreate the animated classic through music, dancing, elaborate costumes, and beautiful stage sets.

Even if you’ve seen it before, it’s a show that’s easy to watch again.

The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure

The newest version of The Little Mermaid stage show brings Ariel’s story back to Hollywood Studios with updated effects, vibrant scenery, and impressive puppetry.

Along the way you’ll spend time with:

  • Ariel
  • Prince Eric
  • Sebastian
  • Flounder
  • Ursula

It’s also another welcome opportunity to cool off indoors while still enjoying one of Disney’s most beloved stories.

Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After

If your family enjoys the darker side of Disney storytelling, don’t miss Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After.

Rather than focusing on just one villain, this theatrical production brings together several of Disney’s most iconic baddies for a fun, over-the-top performance filled with music, humor, and plenty of attitude.

It’s a nice change of pace from the princesses and heroes you’ll find throughout the rest of the park.

Fantasmic! Deserves a Category All Its Own

If I had to choose one character experience that defines Hollywood Studios, this would be it.

Yes, Fantasmic! is a nighttime spectacular.

Yes, it’s one of the best shows in Walt Disney World.

But it’s also one of the greatest celebrations of Disney characters anywhere on Disney property.

Over the course of the performance, you’ll see heroes, princesses, villains, sidekicks, and classic Disney favorites brought together through incredible music, water effects, projections, fireworks, and live performances—all centered around Mickey Mouse’s imagination.

Without giving away every surprise, you’ll encounter characters inspired by movies like:

  • Frozen
  • Moana
  • Aladdin
  • Pocahontas
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • The Little Mermaid
  • Mickey Mouse and friends
  • some of Disney’s most memorable villains

The finale alone is worth staying for.

Watching dozens of Disney characters sail across the lagoon aboard the Steamboat Willie riverboat still gives me goosebumps, no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

If you’re only spending one day at Hollywood Studios, I genuinely think Fantasmic is the perfect way to end it.

Fantasmic at Hollywood Studios

If character waits and shorter attraction lines are a priority, you may also want to consider Disney’s Hollywood Studios After Hours. While the event doesn’t offer exclusive character meet-and-greets, the lower crowds often make it easier to enjoy the park and experience more in one evening.

Special Event Characters: Jollywood Nights

If you’re lucky enough to visit during the holiday season, Disney Jollywood Nights takes character experiences to another level.

One of the biggest reasons Disney fans purchase tickets for this separately ticketed event is the opportunity to meet characters that rarely appear during regular park hours.

While the lineup changes from year to year, past events have included favorites such as:

  • Mike and Sulley
  • Joy and Sadness
  • Baloo and King Louie
  • Max
  • Powerline Max
  • Phineas and Ferb
  • and other rare Disney characters

For serious Disney character collectors, Jollywood Nights has quickly become one of the best special events of the year.

If meeting popular characters is high on your priority list, arriving for Hollywood Studios Early Entry can also help you experience headliner attractions before shifting your focus to character encounters later in the morning.

Tips for Meeting Characters at Hollywood Studios

Hollywood Studios is a little different from the other Disney parks.

Instead of packing your day with one meet-and-greet after another, I recommend embracing the unexpected.

A few tips that have worked well for us:

  • Reserve Hollywood & Vine if meeting multiple classic Disney characters is one of your priorities.
  • Check the My Disney Experience app throughout the day since character schedules can change.
  • Visit Toy Story Land earlier in the morning if you plan to meet Woody, Buzz, or Jessie.
  • Slow down in Galaxy’s Edge. Some of the best character interactions happen when you simply let Stormtroopers, Chewbacca, or the Mandalorian come to you.
  • Don’t overlook Edna Mode. She consistently delivers one of the funniest meet-and-greets at Walt Disney World.
  • If you’re attending Jollywood Nights, prioritize the exclusive characters—they’re one of the event’s biggest draws.
  • End your day with Fantasmic. There’s simply no better finale to a day filled with Disney characters.

Not sure where to head first? My Hollywood Studios Rope Drop Strategy will help you decide whether to prioritize rides, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Toy Story Land, or another area of the park before the crowds build.

If you’re planning to combine rides and character experiences in the same day, my Hollywood Studios Multi Pass Guide can help you make the most of your Lightning Lane selections while still leaving time to meet your favorite Disney characters.

Final Thoughts

Hollywood Studios may not have the largest number of character meet-and-greets at Walt Disney World, but I honestly think that’s part of its charm.

Instead of focusing on quantity, this park creates experiences that feel immersive and spontaneous. One minute you might be laughing with Edna Mode. The next, you’re being questioned by Stormtroopers, waving to Chewbacca, or spotting the Mandalorian and Grogu as they make their way through Black Spire Outpost.

Those unexpected moments are what I remember most.

Then, just when you think the day can’t get any better, Fantasmic brings together heroes, villains, princesses, and classic Disney characters for one spectacular finale.

For me, that’s what makes Hollywood Studios such a special place for Disney fans. The characters aren’t just waiting behind a rope for a photo—they feel like they’re part of the story.

And that’s Disney magic at its best. ❤️
