Hollywood Studios Early Entry Strategy: How to Ride More with Less Wait

hollywood studios early entry strategy

Want to skip long lines at Hollywood Studios? This Early Entry strategy shows exactly how to ride Rise, Slinky Dog Dash, and more before park opening.

How to Use Early Entry at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Without Wasting Your Best Ride Window

If you’re staying at a Walt Disney World Resort (or one of the select hotels that qualify), Early Entry is one of Disney World’s most popular perks.

But at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, it’s not just a “nice bonus.”

It’s the difference between:

  • Walking onto multiple headliner attractions
  • Or spending the rest of your day dealing with long lines and frustrating wait times

So this guide is not going to re-explain everything about Early Entry.

👉 I already covered the full basics in my main Disney trips post.

Think of this as your strategy guide—the real-world, what-actually-works version.

And, if you’re still trying to decide whether Early Entry or rope drop is the better strategy for your trip, I break that down step-by-step in this guide so you can choose what actually works best for your park days.

Hollywood Studios might be the best park for Early Entry—but Magic Kingdom plays by completely different rules, and the strategy there looks very different.

Quick Refresher: What Early Entry Actually Is

Early theme park entry gives guests of Disney Resort hotels and select hotels access to the park 30 minutes before the official park opening time.

At Hollywood Studios:

  • Official Early Entry: typically 8:30 AM
  • Official park opening: typically 9:00 AM

But here’s the important thing…

👉 The actual opening time is often earlier.

And that’s where things get interesting.

The Real Advantage of Early Entry at Hollywood Studios

Let me just say this clearly:

Hollywood Studios is the best park for Early Entry.

Why?

Because:

So if you don’t get ahead early…

You will feel behind all day.

But if you do?

You can knock out:

  • Rise of the Resistance
  • Slinky Dog Dash
  • Toy Story Mania

…before the general public even fully enters the park.

That is a massive advantage of Early Entry.

Lay of the Land: What’s Open During Early Entry

Here’s one of the best parts about Hollywood Studios:

👉 The entire park is basically open.

Unlike Magic Kingdom (where only certain lands are open), Hollywood Studios gives Early Entry guests access to:

  • Galaxy’s Edge (Star Wars land)
  • Toy Story Land
  • Sunset Boulevard
  • Hollywood Boulevard
  • Grand Avenue

That means all the big rides are in play.

Headliner Attractions Open for Early Entry

  • Rise of the Resistance
  • Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
  • Slinky Dog Dash
  • Toy Story Mania
  • Alien Swirling Saucers
  • Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway
  • Tower of Terror
  • Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster (roller coaster starring Aerosmith)
  • Star Tours

👉 Basically: full access to everything that matters.

BUT…

There is one big wildcard.

The Rise of the Resistance Factor (This Changes Everything)

Let’s talk about the most popular ride in the park:

Rise of the Resistance

This ride is:

  • The most popular attraction
  • The biggest time suck if you ride it later
  • And the most unpredictable ride in Disney World

Here’s what makes it tricky:

👉 It often opens before Early Entry officially starts

I’ve personally seen:

  • Rise running as early as 8:00 AM
  • Even though Early Entry is “officially” 8:30 AM

That is a HUGE deal.

Because:

  • If you’re there early → you can ride with almost no wait
  • If you’re late → you’re instantly behind

And yes…

It also breaks down. A lot.

So your entire strategy hinges on this one decision:
👉 Is Rise running when you get there?

What Time Does Early Entry Actually Start?

Let’s break this down in real terms:

  • Parking lot opens: around 7:00–7:15 AM
  • Guests allowed through main entrance: often 7:45–8:10 AM
  • Rides begin operating:
    • Most rides: around 8:25–8:30 AM
    • Rise of the Resistance: sometimes 8:00 AM or earlier

So even though the official start of early entry is 8:30…

👉 The real action starts much earlier.

What Time You Should Arrive (This Is Critical)

If you want the full Early Entry experience:

👉 You should arrive between 7:00–7:30 AM

Yes, really.

Here’s why:

  • You beat the vast majority of guests
  • You get ahead of Disney transportation crowds
  • You position yourself near the front of the line

You mentioned arriving at 7:10 AM via Lyft

That is EXACTLY the move.

Because:

  • Buses and Skyliner typically start later
  • On-site guests relying on Disney transportation arrive later
  • You gain a huge advantage over both on-site and off-site guests

👉 This is honestly one of the biggest hidden advantages in this entire strategy.

Transportation Strategy (Don’t Mess This Up)

If you rely on Disney transportation:

  • You’re at the mercy of bus timing
  • You’ll likely arrive with a large wave of guests

If you use Lyft/Uber:

  • You control your arrival time
  • You can get there before the crowds

👉 If Early Entry matters to you, this is the only way to guarantee positioning.

Early Entry Strategy #1: Rise First (The Power Move)

This is the most aggressive—and usually the best—strategy.

Step-by-Step Plan

  1. Arrive by ~7:10–7:30 AM
  2. Enter as soon as cast members allow access
  3. Head straight to Galaxy’s Edge
  4. Check if Rise of the Resistance is running

If Rise is OPEN:

  • Ride it immediately
  • You’ll likely be off by ~8:30 AM

Then:

👉 Head straight to Toy Story Land

  • Ride Slinky Dog Dash (short wait, maybe 15–20 minutes)
  • Then jump into Toy Story Mania before 9 AM

👉 That’s THREE headliner attractions done before official park opening.

What If Rise Is Down? (Your Pivot Plan)

This happens more than you’d think.

So you need a backup.

Pivot Option #1 (Best):

👉 Go to Slinky Dog Dash

  • This is the second most popular ride
  • Lines build FAST
  • Early Entry is the best place to ride it

Pivot Option #2:

👉 Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run

  • Especially great if you want:
    • Short wait
    • Cool photos in Galaxy’s Edge
    • A more relaxed start

👉 The important thing:

Do not hesitate.

The moment you see Rise is down:
➡️ Pivot immediately.

Early Entry Strategy #2: Sunset Boulevard Run

If you don’t care about Star Wars rides first thing…

This is a GREAT option.

Plan:

  1. Head to Tower of Terror
  2. Ride with minimal wait
  3. Walk next door to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster
  4. Then head toward Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway

👉 You can realistically knock out all three before 9 AM.

This is:

  • Less chaotic
  • More predictable
  • A really solid rope drop strategy alternative

Strategy #3: Balanced Start (Underrated Option)

If you want a smoother morning:

  • Start with Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway
  • Then head to Sunset Boulevard
  • Then transition to Toy Story Land

This avoids:

  • The Galaxy’s Edge chaos
  • The Slinky Dog Dash rush

👉 It’s not the most aggressive strategy—but it’s a good option for first time visitors.

Real-Life Case Studies (This Is Why It Works)

Let’s look at some actual mornings where I used early entry at Hollywood Studios

February 6

  • 7:36 AM – Arrive (took a Lyft to the park)
  • 8:08 AM – In line for Rise of the Resistance
  • 8:32 AM – Off ride
  • 9:01 AM – Riding Slinky Dog Dash
  • 9:05 AM – Done

👉 That’s insane efficiency.

April 20

  • 7:10 AM – Arrive at Holllywood Studios (took a Lyft). We were within the 1st 10 people at the park
  • 8:07 AM – In line for Rise of the Resistance
  • 8:36 AM – Done with Rise and headed to Toy Story Land
  • 8:57 AM – Done with Slinky Dog Dash
  • 9:18 AM – Done with Toy Story Mania

👉 THREE major rides before 9:20 AM.

That’s the advantage of Early Entry.

Note: We were so early on this day that we made it to Hollywood Studios before the first bus arrived and before the Skyliner started running. That is a HUGE advantage!

Breakfast Strategy (Don’t Skip This Part)

After you knock out your first few rides…

👉 Take a break.

If you’re in Toy Story Land:

  • Woody’s Lunch Box (great option)

Starting in Galaxy’s Edge:

  • Ronto Roasters (highly recommend)

If you’re on Sunset Boulevard:

  • Hollywood Scoops
  • Fairfax Fare

This is a perfect time to:

  • Recharge
  • Check your My Disney Experience app
  • Start stacking Lightning Lane Multi Pass reservations

The Photo Advantage (This Is Underrated)

Early morning at Hollywood Studios has:

  • Fewer people
  • Better lighting
  • A more relaxed atmosphere

👉 You can get:

  • Empty-ish Galaxy’s Edge shots
  • Toy Story Land without crowds
  • That “new ride smell” feeling

This is one of those subtle Early Entry perks people don’t talk about enough.

Galaxy’s Edge during early entry

And if you really want to maximize your time, pairing this with Lightning Lane Multi Pass is where things get powerful—here’s exactly how the system works without the overwhelm.

Combining Early Entry + Multi Pass (Game Changer)

If you pair Early Entry with:
👉 Lightning Lane Multi Pass reservations

You can:

  • Knock out headliners early
  • Stack reservations for later
  • Avoid long wait times entirely

👉 This is how you completely optimize the rest of your day.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Let’s save you from a few painful ones:

1. Arriving Too Late

If you show up at 8:15…
You’ve already lost your advantage.

2. No Pivot Plan

Rise goes down → you freeze → you waste time

Don’t do that.

3. Wandering Without a Plan

Hollywood Studios is not forgiving.

You need a plan for your first ride and second ride.

4. Underestimating Slinky Dog Dash

This ride hits 60–90 minute wait times FAST.

Is Early Entry Worth It at Hollywood Studios?

Short answer?

👉 Yes. Absolutely. 100%.

Long answer:

This is the park where Early Entry:

  • Saves you the most time
  • Helps you avoid the longest lines
  • Sets up your entire day

If you’re staying on-site…

This is the park where you must use it.

Final Strategy Summary (If You Just Want the Plan)

If everything goes right:

👉 Arrive: 7:00–7:30 AM (Lyft if possible)
👉 First ride: Rise of the Resistance
👉 Second ride: Slinky Dog Dash
👉 Third ride: Toy Story Mania

If Rise is down:

👉 Go straight to Slinky Dog Dash
👉 Then Toy Story Mania or Smugglers Run

Alternate plan:

👉 Start at Tower of Terror → Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster → Runaway Railway

Bottom Line

Hollywood Studios is not a “figure it out as you go” park.

It’s a:

  • Plan ahead
  • Move quickly
  • Take advantage early

kind of park.

And Early Entry?

👉 It’s your best tool to win the day.

If you use it right, you can walk into the afternoon already having done most of the heavy hitters.

And that’s when Disney starts feeling a whole lot more fun… and a lot less stressful.
