Magic Kingdom Early Entry Strategy: How to Beat the Crowds Before Park Opening

magic kingdom early entry strategy

Learn how to use Magic Kingdom Early Entry to ride Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Space Mountain, and more before the crowds hit. Real strategy that works.

How to Actually Use Early Entry at Magic Kingdom Without Wasting It

If you’re staying at a Walt Disney World resort hotel, one of the best perks you get is Early Entry.

But here’s the thing most people don’t realize…

👉 Just having Early Entry doesn’t mean you’re using it well.

And at Magic Kingdom in particular, that matters a lot.

Because you don’t have unlimited options.
You don’t have unlimited time.
And if you don’t have a plan, you can burn that entire early entry period and still end up in long lines by 9:15am.

So this guide is not going to re-explain the basics.

I already covered that in my full beginner guide to Early Entry.

This is the Magic Kingdom-specific strategy guide—what actually works, what doesn’t, and how to get real value out of this early theme park entry benefit.

Quick Refresher: What Early Entry Actually Is

Let’s keep this quick.

Early Entry is a perk for guests of Disney Resort hotels and select partner hotels that lets you enter the park 30 minutes before the general public.

You’ll need:

  • Valid theme park admission
  • A reservation for Magic Kingdom (or park hopper plans)
  • And to be staying at an eligible Disney hotel

This applies across multiple theme parks (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios), but the strategy is very different in each.

👉 And honestly? Magic Kingdom is where Early Entry can feel the most worth it… if you use it right.

The Lay of the Land: What’s Actually Open During Early Entry

This is where people get tripped up.

At Magic Kingdom, Early Entry is not the whole park.

Open Lands:

  • Fantasyland
  • Tomorrowland

Not Open (Yet):

  • Adventureland
  • Frontierland
  • Liberty Square

And that matters more than you think.

Because it means you’re choosing from a very limited pool of available attractions.

Key rides typically open:

  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
  • Peter Pan’s Flight
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
  • Space Mountain
  • Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin
  • Under the Sea ~ Little Mermaid
  • it’s a small world
  • Dumbo
  • Barnstormer
  • Mad Tea Party
  • Mickey’s Philharmagic

Notably NOT open:

  • Tron Lightcycle Run (but more on that in a minute)
  • Jungle Cruise
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
  • Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

How Early Entry Actually Works (Step-by-Step Reality)

Here’s what it looks like in real life—not the brochure version.

1. You Can Enter Main Street Early

Even before the start of early entry, you’ll usually be let into Main Street U.S.A.

This is huge.

Because:

  • You can grab photos with almost no crowds
  • You can get coffee/breakfast
  • You’re already inside the park

2. The “Holding Zones” Open Before Official Start Time

At the bridge to Tomorrowland and Fantasyland, you’ll see a row of cast members scanning Magic Bands.

Only resort guests get through.

This is your first “gate.”

3. Early Entry Often Starts Before the Posted Time

This is one of the biggest insider realities.

If Early Entry is listed at 8:30am…

👉 Some rides (especially Seven Dwarfs Mine Train) may start running at 8:15 or even earlier.

Which means:

If you show up at 8:30… you’re already behind.

What Time Should You Get to Magic Kingdom?

This is the most important thing.

If you want to actually be at the front of the pack, here’s the real recommendation:

👉 Arrive at the park entrance 45–60 minutes before Early Entry starts

Yes, really.

Because:

  • Transportation can be unpredictable
  • Security + entry takes time
  • The “unofficial rope drop” happens early

If you show up 15–20 minutes before?

You’re now in a large crowd, not ahead of it.

Transportation Strategy (Don’t Skip This Part)

This is where a lot of people unintentionally sabotage their morning.

Disney Transportation

Buses, monorails, and boats typically start running:
👉 About 60 minutes before park opening

Not Early Entry.

Park opening.

So if Early Entry is at 8:30 and park opening is 9:00…

You may not get transportation until 8:00.

Which is… not ideal.

My Recommendation (And What I Personally Do)

👉 Use Lyft or Uber.

Especially for Magic Kingdom.

It is the best way to:

  • Control your timing
  • Get to the main gate early
  • Actually be ahead of the crowd

Because Early Entry only works if you’re early enough.

The Core Strategy: You Don’t Have Time for Everything

This is where we get into the real strategy.

You have:
👉 30 minutes (maybe a little more if rides open early)

You are NOT riding 5+ major attractions.

So you need to decide your priority path.

Strategy Path #1: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train First

This is my normal recommendation.

Because:

👉 It is the most popular ride in Magic Kingdom
👉 It consistently has long waits
👉 It is NOT included in Lightning Lane Multi Pass

So your options are:

  • Early Entry
  • A very long standby line
  • Or buying a Single Pass

How This Strategy Plays Out

  1. Head straight to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
  2. Ride it with low waits
  3. Immediately go to Peter Pan’s Flight
  4. Then possibly Winnie the Pooh

If you move efficiently, you can knock out:

  • Two of the most popular attractions
  • Before the general public even enters

Why This Works

You’re eliminating:

  • A 60–90 minute wait later
  • Or the cost of a single pass

That’s a huge win for your day.

Strategy Path #2: Tomorrowland (Space Mountain Focus)

If you’re not prioritizing Seven Dwarfs, this is your next best option.

Target rides:

  • Space Mountain
  • Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin

Why This Strategy Works

  • Space Mountain can get long waits quickly
  • Buzz is a high-capacity ride (easy second ride)
  • You stay in one area (no zig-zagging)

Best Order

👉 Space Mountain first
👉 Then Buzz Lightyear

This keeps you efficient and ahead of crowds.

What About Tron Lightcycle Run?

Important nuance here.

👉 Tron is NOT open during Early Entry

BUT…

You can line up for it before park opening.

When This Makes Sense

If you:

  • Don’t want to buy a Single Pass
  • Don’t mind waiting
  • Want to ride it first thing

Then yes, lining up early can be a good way to ride without paying.

The Trade-Off (Opportunity Cost)

This is the key question:

👉 Is it worth giving up Early Entry rides to wait for Tron?

Because while you’re waiting…

You are NOT riding:

  • Seven Dwarfs
  • Peter Pan
  • Space Mountain

And those lines are growing.

My Take

If you’re trying to maximize efficiency:

👉 Do NOT start with Tron

Use Early Entry to knock out other rides first.

Then:

  • Ride Tron later
  • Or buy the Single Pass

The Secret Bonus Strategy: What Happens at Official Rope Drop

This is one of the biggest advantages of Early Entry that people don’t talk about enough.

Even though Adventureland and Frontierland are closed during Early Entry…

👉 They open at regular rope drop.

And guess what?

Most of the crowd is still:

  • In Fantasyland
  • Or Tomorrowland

What That Means for You

If you time this right…

You can hit rides like:

  • Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
  • Jungle Cruise
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (when open)

With very short waits.

Ideal Flow

  1. Use Early Entry in Fantasyland or Tomorrowland
  2. At park opening, pivot to Frontierland/Adventureland
  3. Ride 1–2 headliners with low waits

This is how you stack wins early in the day.

Secondary Benefits of Early Entry (That Are Easy to Forget)

1. Lower Crowds = Better Photos

Magic Kingdom in the early morning?

It’s a completely different vibe.

  • Empty castle shots
  • Clean sightlines on Main Street
  • No shoulder-to-shoulder crowds

It’s honestly one of the best times for photos your entire trip.

2. Cooler Temperatures

Especially in the summer…

👉 This is the most comfortable part of your day.

You’re getting rides done before:

  • Heat
  • Humidity
  • Exhaustion

3. A More Peaceful Start

This sounds small, but it matters.

Starting your day without chaos:

  • Reduces stress
  • Sets the tone
  • Makes everything feel more manageable

Common Mistakes That Waste Early Entry

Let’s just call these out directly.

❌ Showing Up Too Late

If you arrive at the start of early entry… you’re already behind.

❌ Not Having a Plan

Wandering = long waits.

❌ Trying to Do Too Much

You don’t have time. Pick a lane.

❌ Starting with Low-Priority Rides

Don’t waste early entry on rides with consistently low waits.

❌ Waiting for Tron First Thing

You’re giving up too much value.

How This Fits With Lightning Lane Multi Pass

Early Entry + Lightning Lane Multi Pass is where things really click.

Use Early Entry to:

  • Knock out high-demand rides
  • Reduce pressure on your Lightning Lanes

Then use Lightning Lanes for:

  • Mid-morning and afternoon
  • When standby lines peak

👉 I break this down more in my full Multipass guide (link here).

Bottom Line: The Best Early Entry Strategy for Magic Kingdom

If you want the simplest version:

👉 Arrive early (really early)
👉 Go straight to a headliner
👉 Ride 2–3 attractions max
👉 Pivot to Frontierland at rope drop

That’s it.

That’s the strategy.

And if you do it right?

You’ll be done with some of the hardest rides in Magic Kingdom…

Before most people even get their first coffee on Main Street.
