How To Throw A Fun Luau For Kids
How To Throw A Fun Luau For Kids
These are some fun ideas for how to throw a fun luau for kids. Great ideas for a backyard luau this summer!
We may not be able to take a trip to Hawaii, but you can still bring the Aloha spirit into your home with a traditional luau! Luaus are a staple in Hawaiian culture and the perfect highlight to your Hawaiian week! While travel is still limited, and you want to have some summer fun at home, here is how to throw a fun luau for kids!
Start with the menu
One of the most iconic parts of a luau is the colorful traditional Hawaiian foods! For food, you want to find a few recipes for things like kalua pork or haupia to keep things authentic! I recommend grabbing some pineapples from the store to add a fun piece of decor and delicious addition to your menu. If you don’t want to go full Hawaiian with your food, you can still work in some Hawaiian style with decorations or themed drinks!
Put up some decorations
Luaus are traditionally held outside, but if the weather isn’t cooperating, you could always move your luau indoors. First, start by adding some “natural lighting” to your luau space! Tiki torches are an excellent option, but make sure you have additional lights or lanterns to see the items on your food table. Next, add some Hawaiian themed pieces to your table and around your yard. These could be tiki masks, hibiscus flowers, or other Hawaiian touches that will pull together the luau theme.
Look up some Hawaiian culture
While I don’t suggest taking up fire dancing, there are many aspects to Hawaiian culture that you could incorporate into your luau! You can find Hawaiian music to play, learn to hula by watching an instructional video, or learn basic steps to teach to your kids during the luau! This is a fun way to make this a more interactive experience and less like a cookout!
Create some Hawaiian drinks
Mai tais and other Hawaiian drinks are a luau staple. For kids, you can make mocktail versions of these drinks! The main goal is to first go for something colorful. Then, think about how you are serving your drinks! There are plenty of great options such as tiki cups or fake coconut drink holders at The Dollar Tree, but you could hollow out pineapple or coconut if you wanted to!
Dress up a little
Take off your shoes and find your best beach clothes! You can make leis to put on at the start of your luau. Or have your kids make them while the food is still cooking! Add flowers to your hair and even make grass skirts for them to wear!
You don’t have to go to Hawaii to be able to have a luau for your kids! If you keep these tips handy, you can plan a luau for your kids that they will love! These ideas would work well for birthday parties or just a fun Hawaiian themed night at home. Whatever you decide to do, I promise that these tips will help you create a fabulous luau experience for your family.
