When my daughter was super young we rocked watercolors and tempura paint. But as she gets a little older, we are exploring other art and craft mediums. I have to tell you, I am totally in love with oil pastels!

This Halloween we are serving up some super fun art treats with some Halloween-themed oil pastel art projects.

I love this oil pastel bat craft because it looks amazing… but also because it is a great project for your kids to dig into. A great art project for color blending, experimenting with shading, and using an art medium that is slightly messy.. but not full on mess fest like acrylic paint.. or the dreaded glitter.

What Will You Need?

Construction Paper (or cardstock)
Oil Pastels (these ones are very highly rated)
Scissors
Glue (Elmer’s Glue or gluestick are both fine)
FREE Haunted House Craft Template (see below)

How to make this Super Cool Oil Pastel Bat Craft Art Project

Step One: Download and print out the Bat template.

Carefully cut out all the bats from the template and set aside. Pro tip: For intricate cutting like this, you might want to use really sharp scissors. If you are doing this craft with your kids, this part will absolutely need adult supervision.

Step Two: Draw the Moon

On a white piece of construction paper or cardstock, draw a circle (moon) with yellow pastels. To get the same effect as the example, you will want to center the circle in the middle of the cardstock and draw it quite large.. almost touching the side edges of the paper.

Don’t worry about using too much of the oil pastel. You want the moon to pop. After you have the yellow moon base, roughly trace the yellow circle with a thick orange outline.

Step Three: Blend the Colors

Use your fingertips to smudge the colors together. Your kids will love this step. It’s a perfect excuse to get a little messy… but since these are oil pastels and not paint.. hopefully not too messy.

Step Four: Add the Night Sky

Use blue and green oil pastels to create the color around the moon. This oil pastel art craft is supposed to be eerie and fuzzy. It’s definitely not an exact science. So, feel free to experiment with the blues and greens to create the desired shading you want for your masterpiece.

If your blue gets too dark, add some white and blend it in. If you want the blue a little darker, you could even add some purple. Just remember– this is art– there are not mistakes in art.. only opportunities to be creative. (Your kids might need to hear this little piece of advice if they get frustrated.)

To get the eerie and misty effect of the night sky, apply a thick layer of oil pastel and then use your fingertips to blend the colors in. Don’t stop short though– keep blending. Do lots of blending.

Step Five: Add the Black Border to give this art a super spooky effect

Once finished, draw a border around the entire piece of paper with black oil pastel. Blend the black pastel towards the middle of the paper.

Step Six: Add the Bats

Once satisfied with the result, glue the bats all over the moon.

You can totally make this project unique and experiment with many different colors. A white moon with a purple and pink background sounds amazing!
