Go to the movies together
The movies are an excellent opportunity to spend time with your daughter! Head out for a matinee movie together, and enjoy a bucket of popcorn while watching a good movie.
Run errands together
Errands aren’t fun, but just having her along for the ride will give you time to bond! Inside jokes in the produce section, a funny billboard on the way back from school, and so many other memories are made on those little car rides around town.
Shop together
Instead of just sending your daughter off to the mall with her friends when she needs something, why not go shopping together? Offer to buy her some new shirts for back to school, or help her pick out her dress for prom.
Meet her on her level
Sometimes you need to meet your child on their level. If she’s not comfortable being seen in public with her mom, don’t push it. She may have been bullied at school for it, and being pushy won’t solve anything. Be flexible with your daughter and allow her to set the ground rules she feels comfortable with.
Choose an activity that she is interested in
Does your daughter like to draw? Why not pick up some art supplies and draw with her! She will love having something that she can do with you.
Do a project together
Doing a project or activity together is a great way to be able to bond. Connecting with your daughter can be hard, but by doing a project together, you’ll have a little bit of forced communication.
Find a hobby that you can do together
While taking an interest in activities, your daughter likes can be a great way to connect, finding a hobby you can enjoy is even better!
Don’t be pushy when you talk to her
While you want to know every detail of your child’s life, it’s just as important to give her space and not be pushy! Being pushy will make it hard to connect and could end up driving a wedge between you two.
Go on a trip together
A mother-daughter or even a father-daughter trip is an excellent way to bond! Between the journey there and the activities you do, you’ll have a lot to talk about just while on the trip itself!
Give her some space
If you want to connect with your daughter, know when it’s time to give her some space. We can sometimes come off as pushy and a little overbearing when we try too hard. It’s okay to let her go to you sometimes.
I hope these have given you some ideas for how to connect with your daughter! As a parent, it might feel like you are the last person she wants to see, but I promise you that making this time matters.
