Cooking Supplies
No matter what kind of meal plan you put together for your camping trip, there are a few basic cooking supplies that you will need to prepare your food to cook. While you might not need all of these supplies, you will need these most common ones.
Fire Starter and Lighter
You will need a way to start a fire, and you can’t cook without a fire or your kitchen stove, so this falls under cooking supplies! Make your own firestarter, or get some firewood and lighter fluid. You will also need a way to light that fire, so make sure you get some matches or a lighter.
Dishes and Cookware
Having a variety of cookware can not only help you with making a wide variety of meals while you’re camping, but it can also ensure an easier cleanup! Here are some of the cookware I recommend to get you started.
- Dutch oven
- Pans
- Cast iron skillet
- Pie iron
Aluminum Foil and Skewers
If you plan on cooking over a campfire, you will need a way to put your food near the fire without burning yourself. Aluminum foil can be used to make foil packet meals that you set next to the campfire, and skewers can be used for kabobs or roasting.
Cooking Utensils
In addition to what you use for cooking your food in, making sure that you also have a way to eat your food! This can range from real dishware to paper plates! Don’t forget about cups and silverware too.
Cooking Methods
There are various ways you can cook while at your campsite, but not all of them are created equal. They will all give your food different tastes and textures because they are cooked in various ways.
Campfire Cooking
Unless you are camping where you are not allowed to have an open flame, this will be your most used cooking method. Campfire cooking can be used to make everything from hot dogs to pizza!
Foil Packet Cooking
To make something in a foil packet, you will want to make sure that you seal the bag well when folding. This will help ensure that any marinades or sauces don’t spill out over the side. Next, put your packet near the campfire stove, and occasionally turn if needed until cooked through.
Grate/Grill Cooking
Many campsites will already have a grate on the campfire, but you’ll want to pick up your own to bring with you if yours does not. To cook using a grate, you can put cooked food directly on the grate, or roast over the grate and get direct heat from the flames.
Cooking in Pots and Pans
You can use dutch ovens, cast iron skillets, or various pots and pans to make your meals. If you have a grate, you can use them directly on the grate for fast cooking. Otherwise, you may need to hold it over the fire to cook.
Roasting
Roasting is one of the most popular and one of the easiest methods for cooking. With roasting, you put your food on a stick or something that can be put directly in or over your fire. S’mores and roasting hot dogs are the most popular forms of cooking.
Other Cooking Methods- campfire stove
The last method of cooking is campfire stove cooking. If you have a camping stove, you can essentially use this small appliance to make anything you would normally make over the stove. It works in the same way.
