Trail of the Cedars and Avalanche Lake

This trail is four and a half miles roundtrip, but it’s one of the most popular trails for a good reason! You can get a beautiful view of the lake, and the trailhead is located a few miles east of Lake McDonald. Much of this part is great because it’s an easy walk and even parts of it are wheelchair accessible. It’s in the shade during most of the hike and has great views of the forest.

Once you get to the Avalanche Lake trailhead, you will see the Lower Avalanche Gorge and Creek. If your kids are up for it, you will likely want to hike all the way to Avalanche Lake (4.5 miles RT), but you don’t have to commit to that length to be wow’d by the gorge. You can see the waterfall from a platform at the bottom of the trailhead, and then you can walk up as far as you want to see the gorge from different vantage points. Trust me, it’s totally worth the detour!

Running Eagle Falls

If you want to do a lot of sightseeing without effort, the Two Medicine area is perfect. You can enjoy the forest and meadow views while still walking through moose country. You’ll see all kinds of wild creatures from a distance, and you can see Running Eagle Falls on this hike. Running Eagle Falls is a short hike with a gorgeous waterfall pay off. It’s a great place to do some rock scrambling and even jump in and swim!

Rocky Point Nature Trail

If you’re looking for a shorter hike, Rocky Point Nature Trail is a good one to do! It’s a shorter hike that takes you along Lake Mcdonald and to a lookout area where you can head to the Apgar Visitor Center. The overlook and forest are something to see alone, but you can also go to the waterfront to throw some rocks, take in the scenery, or relax.

Red Rocks Trail and Overlook

This is a great stop along the Going To The Sun Road, with a short walk/hike to stretch your legs and see some beautiful shots of the river and mountains. This was one of our first stops in Glacier and was a perfect introduction to the majesty of the park!

Mary Falls and Virginia Falls

On the back end trail near Siyeh Bend, this has a beautiful waterfall on the trail and is perfect for hikers of all skill levels. You can do plenty of activities on this trail, such as going on foot, horse, or even bike while you’re there if you want to try a different kind of hike.

Hidden Lake Overlook

If you are hoping to see alpine views and wildlife, this is the best trail to do it! There are some big uphill areas, but it is a great place to take early in the morning. The overlook has a platform deck with a beautiful view of Hidden Lake and peaks around it. There are also 1,000 feet of switchbacks to the lakeshore if you’re feeling adventurous.

Note: Logan Pass is at pretty high altitude and you/your kids could get out of breath fairly easily. Even if you can’t make it all the way to the overlook, the views in the Logan Pass area are absolutely spectacular!
