Best Rides at Animal Kingdom in Disney World (Ranked)

best rides at animal kingdom

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is not the park with the most rides. And honestly, that’s kind of the point.

When people start planning a Walt Disney World vacation, this park often raises questions. Do you need a full day here? Are there enough rides for kids? Is it better for animal exhibits than attractions? And how do you even prioritize rides when there aren’t that many?

This post is meant to answer those questions — specifically when it comes to the best Animal Kingdom rides.

This is a completely subjective ranking based on my own experiences, personal preferences, and multiple trips. I’m ranking rides only, not stage shows, animal exhibits, walking trails, or play areas (even though those are a huge part of what makes this park special).

I’m also keeping things current. This guide reflects how Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park actually operates now — including Early Entry, Lightning Lane Multi Pass, long lines, and realistic planning decisions people have to make.

If you’re using this as part of a larger Walt Disney World planning guide, think of it as a way to decide where to spend your time, energy, and Lightning Lane selections — and where you can relax a little instead.

My Ranking of the Best Animal Kingdom Rides

1. Avatar Flight of Passage

Most popular ride | Most thrilling ride | Favorite ride

Avatar Flight of Passage is not just the most popular ride at Animal Kingdom — it’s my favorite ride across all Disney parks.

I know that’s a bold statement. Many people rank Rise of the Resistance or Guardians of the Galaxy higher. I get it. Those rides are incredible. But for me, Flight of Passage delivers something different.

The sensation of flying on the back of a banshee is unlike anything else in a Disney theme park. The ride vehicle moves and breathes with you, which makes the experience feel physical, not passive. You feel the drops, the speed, and the motion in a way that goes beyond standard screen-based special effects.

There’s also an emotional element that sneaks up on you. The music builds perfectly. The transitions feel intentional. And that final whale scene is beautiful every single time — even a little bittersweet.

The only downside is the line.

Flight of Passage is known for long lines, and they can be rough. There are even restrooms halfway through the line. Yeah, it’s that long.

The queue is interesting, especially the life-size Avatar animatronic near the end, but it can be hard on your back if you’re standing for a long time.

Because of that, I only ride this attraction in one of three ways:

  • Paying for the Individual Lightning Lane
  • Rope dropping it during Early Entry
  • Getting in line right at the end of the night

That last option is a great way to experience Pandora after dark. Walking out into the glowing bioluminescent rainforest is one of the most memorable moments in the park.

Despite being a thrill ride, I’ve also found Flight of Passage to be manageable for motion sickness compared to other popular rides, thanks to how smooth and controlled it feels.

If you’re choosing just one ride to prioritize at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, this is it.

2. Expedition Everest

Thrill ride | Roller coaster | One of the best queues

Expedition Everest is one of the most exciting rides at Animal Kingdom, and it’s also one of the most thoughtfully designed.

This is my daughter’s favorite ride in the park, and it consistently lands in my top tier as well. What makes Expedition Everest stand out isn’t just that it’s a roller coaster — it’s the storytelling layered throughout the experience.

The queue is one of the best queues at any Disney theme park. It feels like a museum dedicated to Everest expeditions and the legend of the Yeti. Many of the artifacts you see are real, not replicas, which gives the ride a grounded, believable feel.

The ride itself is thrilling without being overwhelming. It’s fast, intense, and exciting, but not so extreme that it ruins the rest of your day. The backwards section still catches people off guard, even if they know it’s coming.

And yes — the Yeti is iconic at this point, even in its current form.

There is a height requirement, so this ride isn’t for little kids, but for older kids, teens, and adults, it’s one of the most re-rideable attractions at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park.

From a planning standpoint, Expedition Everest is also easier to fit into your day than Flight of Passage. It’s a great use of Lightning Lane Multi Pass and one of the best ways to add a true thrill ride to your Animal Kingdom day.

3. Kilimanjaro Safaris

Animal experiences | Time of day matters

Kilimanjaro Safaris is the heart of Animal Kingdom.

This isn’t just one of the best rides in the park — it’s one of the most unique animal experiences anywhere at Walt Disney World. Every safari is different, which is exactly what makes it special.

You will always see animals. Giraffes, zebras, and water buffalo are common sightings. Lions, cheetahs, and other predators can be more elusive, and that’s where timing and luck matter.

Time of day makes a big difference.
Early morning safaris, especially around feeding times, tend to be the most active. Late afternoon rides can also be excellent once the heat fades. Midday safaris are more unpredictable, particularly in warmer months.

A few practical tips that really do help:

  • Animals appear on both sides of the ride vehicle, but I prefer the left side
  • Avoid sitting directly behind the driver if you can — it limits your view
  • If your first ride feels quiet, riding again later can be completely different

What makes Kilimanjaro Safaris stand out is the scale. The savanna feels vast. There are moments when the ride goes quiet except for animal sounds and the hum of the truck, and it’s easy to forget you’re in a Disney theme park at all.

Cast Members also make a huge difference here. A great guide who knows when to pause and when to explain what you’re seeing can elevate the entire ride.

If you have a lot of photos to use, this is the attraction where they make the most sense — no two safaris ever look the same.

4. Na’vi River Journey

Dark ride | Slow-moving boat ride

Na’vi River Journey is a visually stunning dark ride set inside the World of Avatar.

The glowing plants, detailed scenery, and bioluminescent effects are genuinely beautiful, and the animatronic near the end of the ride is impressive.

That said, this is a slow-moving boat ride, and I wouldn’t wait more than about 30 minutes for it. Longer waits are common because it’s one of the more popular rides, but the experience itself is short.

This is a great option for a calmer moment in your day — especially if you need a break from the heat — but it’s not something I’d build my entire strategy around.

5. Wildlife Express Train

Rafiki’s Planet Watch | Petting zoo access

The Wildlife Express Train is technically a ride, but it’s really a means to an end.

It takes you to Rafiki’s Planet Watch, where you’ll find the Affection Section petting zoo, animal care windows, and educational experiences. You can also sometimes see behind-the-scenes areas connected to Kilimanjaro Safaris.

We usually ride this train specifically to access what’s on the other side, not for the train itself. With new experiences coming to this area, it’s likely to remain a good option for families with small children.

6. Kali River Rapids

Raft ride

Kali River Rapids is a raft ride that I’ve never personally ridden — and probably never will.

It’s not especially thrilling, and you get soaked. Completely soaked. Not refreshed. Just wet.

On an extremely hot day, it might make sense if you have extra time, but most days, this is an easy skip for me.

Dinoland U.S.A. and the Future of Animal Kingdom

Dinoland U.S.A. has always felt slightly disconnected from the rest of the park.

Attractions like TriceraTop Spin and the now-closed Primeval Whirl didn’t quite match the immersive tone of Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park. Primeval Whirl’s closure marked the beginning of a major transition.

That transition is Tropical Americas.

Disney has confirmed plans for a reimagined land inspired by Central and South America, including an Encanto-themed attraction and a new Indiana Jones ride. This expansion is expected to better align with the park’s focus on culture, environment, and storytelling.

Final Thoughts on the Best Rides at Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom isn’t about doing everything as fast as possible.

The best rides — Flight of Passage, Expedition Everest, and Kilimanjaro Safaris — are genuinely excellent. But the park works best when you give it time.

Walk the animal trails. Explore Discovery Island. Look closely at the Tree of Life. Watch the shows. Let the day unfold.

That’s when Disney’s Animal Kingdom stops feeling like the park with fewer rides and starts feeling like one of the most immersive theme parks Disney has ever created.
