Animal Kingdom’s Tusker House Restaurant Review

Let me just say this right up front — I wasn’t totally sold on doing Tusker House. I mean, we’d already booked Chef Mickey and had a whole spreadsheet of meals planned. But the idea of a character meal inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom, with Mickey Mouse in safari gear? Yeah, okay, I caved. And spoiler: I’m really glad I did.

It Feels Like You’ve Left the Theme Park

We showed up a few minutes before lunch reservation, and I immediately noticed how different the vibe was from other Disney restaurants. Tusker House doesn’t scream “theme park” the way some places do.

The outside blends right into Harambe Village, and once you’re inside, it feels like you’ve stepped into a dusty, colorful African outpost — complete with a ceiling fan that creaks, mismatched chairs, and that kind of charming clutter that makes the space feel lived-in.
We were seated in one of the back rooms (there are a few different dining rooms, and they all have a slightly unique look), and honestly, I liked being away from the main traffic. It was still lively, but not overwhelming. There was a buffet area nearby, and our server was already offering to grab drinks before we even unfolded our napkins.
So… What’s the Food Like?
Okay, this is where I need to pause and set expectations: when we visited Tusker House back in 2021, it was still doing family-style dining due to pandemic protocols — so no classic buffet line. But honestly? We didn’t miss it. Everything came out to the table beautifully plated, and you could ask for more of anything. It still felt like a buffet meal, just without the wandering around part. (Which, with kids, was kind of a win.)
We were there for lunch, and the food covered a pretty wide range — both kid-friendly favorites and more adventurous dishes that leaned into those African-inspired flavors Tusker House is known for.
The bread service was the first thing we devoured. Warm rolls, crisp papadum-style crackers, and a trio of dipping sauces — one of which had this amazing herb-forward bite. It was a little unexpected in the best way.

Then came the first course — a fresh green salad and a tomato-cucumber mixture that felt light but flavorful. A great way to kick things off.

The main course was served on a big metal tray, kind of like a sampler platter. It included:
- Cape Malay curry chicken — warm, rich, and well-seasoned without being spicy
- Carved beef and roasted pork — tender, juicy, and flavorful
- Steamed basmati rice and a side of sautéed vegetables (green beans, carrots, corn — even my picky eater grabbed a few bites)
- And yes, even in 2021, they brought out a side of macaroni and cheese for the kids (and, okay, for me too)

If you’re dining with folks who aren’t into bold flavors, don’t stress. There were enough safe options to keep everyone happy. My daughter stuck mostly with the mac and cheese and rolls (classic), but the chicken was a hit for all ages.

What About Dessert?
Even though we were feeling pretty full by the end of lunch, we couldn’t skip dessert. The current dessert selection at Tusker House is set up on the buffet line with a rotating selection of mini sweets. These are designed to be just a few bites each — enough to try more than one without needing a nap after.

Here’s what we were offered in 2021:
- Zebra Mickey Cupcake – A bright yellow vanilla cupcake topped with fluffy white frosting and zebra-striped chocolate Mickey ears. The wrapper even has a safari-style print — it’s basically the most on-theme cupcake ever.
- Chocolate Mickey Tart – Rich, dense chocolate ganache in a crisp tart shell, topped with chocolate dollops, green sugar crumbles (resembling moss or grass), and a stunning sugar-glass decoration that looks like an acacia tree from the savanna.
- Layered Passionfruit Cake – Alternating layers of moist chocolate cake and tangy passionfruit mousse, finished with a shiny yellow glaze and a white chocolate swirl on top. It’s light, tropical, and surprisingly refreshing after a heavy buffet meal.
These desserts are part of the rotating buffet offerings and are served in bite-sized portions, so you can try more than one without overdoing it.
Let’s Talk Characters
One of the big reasons people book Tusker House is the character interactions, and I’ve got to say — they were really well done. We saw Mickey, Donald, Daisy, and Goofy, all decked out in full safari attire. Think khaki vests, explorer hats, and lots of adorable posing.

What I liked was that it didn’t feel like a rushed parade of characters just checking off boxes. Donald Duck did this dramatic pose at our table and insisted he was the “true boss of the safari.”

Goofy did a full dad-joke routine, and Daisy Duck complimented my kid’s shirt and did a little twirl. They made a real effort to connect — not just pose for a photo and bounce.

Even better, the main dining room isn’t too loud or chaotic. If you’ve done Chef Mickey or Cinderella’s Royal Table, you know how those can feel like character-speed-dating. Tusker House? It felt relaxed. Fun, but not frantic.

How Was the Service?
The Cast Member who took care of our table was fantastic. She explained the buffet line setup, gave a few tips on the dinner menus in case we wanted to come back later, and never let my coffee cup go empty. When I asked if the African Bloody Mary was good, she gave a genuine answer (yes, and spicy — just how I like it), not a robotic sales pitch. It’s those little things.

We never felt rushed, and even with the place being busy, the dining area didn’t feel overcrowded. I noticed the buffet was kept spotless too — food was replenished often, and everything looked fresh. That’s not always a given at buffet-style restaurants.
How Much Does It Cost — and Is It Worth It?
Tusker House isn’t exactly cheap. In 2025, breakfast costs $45/adult and $33/kids plus tax and tip. For lunch and dinner, the cost is $64/adult and $42/kids. Kids’ prices are lower, but still, it’s a splurge. You can use the Disney Dining Plan here (1 credit), which definitely helps.
Still, if you’re planning a character meal and want something different from the usual suspects — this is a great option. It felt less touristy than Crystal Palace, and the food quality was higher than I expected for a buffet.
Also, it’s a good way to knock out four characters in one sitting, which saves you time in the parks. That alone is almost worth the price, especially if you’ve got young kids or just want to keep your day moving.

Tips for Booking
Tusker House is popular, so grab your advanced dining reservations early (like, at the 60-day mark if you can). Early morning times are great if you want to rope-drop Kilimanjaro Safari afterward. If you go later like we did, you’ll probably get a few lunch items sneaking onto the line — which was kind of fun, actually.
You’ll need a park ticket for Animal Kingdom, obviously, since the restaurant is inside the park. But it’s near everything — close to Festival of the Lion King, the Nomad Lounge, and just a few minutes from Rainforest Cafe if you’re comparing meal vibes.

Final Thoughts: Should You Book It?
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but Tusker House totally won me over. It’s not just about great food and character hugs — though there are plenty of those. It’s got charm, a touch of adventure, and food that’s actually worth eating. If you want something that feels a little less polished and a little more flavorful, this is one of the best places for a Disney character meal.
I’d go again in a heartbeat — next time for the breakfast buffet, maybe with one of the specialty drinks.
