The Ultimate Guide to Staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge

Let’s talk about Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge—because wow, this Disney resort hotel is something else.
If you’ve ever wanted to sip your morning coffee while giraffes roam just outside your balcony, or unwind by a fire pit after a day in the parks while African drummers play in the background—this might be the most magical Disney World hotel you’ve never seriously considered.
I stayed here with recently, and today I’m spilling everything—what’s amazing, what’s not-so-great, and whether this resort is actually worth the price for a Disney trip.
🏨 Resort Overview
Theming and Atmosphere

The moment you walk into Jambo House, you feel the difference.
The lobby is jaw-dropping—with towering ceilings, massive wooden chandeliers, and cozy seating areas scattered under thatched roofs. It’s warm and earthy, not “in-your-face Disney.” It feels elevated and serene, but still totally kid-friendly.

Everywhere you look, there are authentic African artifacts—over 380 pieces in total—including handcrafted masks, sculptures, and tapestries. There’s an attention to detail here that makes it feel more like a luxury safari lodge than a theme park hotel. As I meandered throughout the resort, I kept thinking, “This is so cool”! Animal Kingdom Lodge actually houses one of the largest collections of African art in the United States—you’ll spot authentic pieces tucked throughout the lobby and hallways.

Resort Category and Location
Animal Kingdom Lodge is a Deluxe Resort, which means it comes with a higher price tag—but also better amenities, larger rooms, and extra perks like Extended Evening Hours on select nights.
The trade-off? It’s the most remote of all the Disney resorts and the only deluxe resort that only uses bus transportation. You’re just 5 minutes from Animal Kingdom (yay!) but 25–30 minutes from Magic Kingdom (less yay). There’s no Skyliner, no Monorail, and no boat service—just buses.
Still, that isolation kind of adds to the resort’s charm. It’s quiet, peaceful, and honestly feels like a true break from the parks. They really try to give the vibe that you are on an actual savannah, deep in the heart of Africa.

🚪 Room Types and Amenities
Room Configurations
There are two sides to Animal Kingdom Lodge:
- Jambo House: This is the main building of the lodge and feels more like a traditional hotel. You’ll find both standard hotel rooms and deluxe villas here.
- Kidani Village: This is the Disney Vacation Club (DVC) wing and the villa section of the resort. But anyone can book here. It’s quieter, more residential in vibe, and home to most of the larger villas.
For my stay, I booked a Savanna View room in Jambo House, and I’ll just say this: if you’re ever going to splurge on a view at Disney, this is the place to do it. Watching giraffes, zebras, and other african animals roam past our balcony made waking up early a joy.

Standard guest rooms sleep up to 4, while suites and villas can sleep up to 9. If you’re a family of 5 or more, the 1- or 2-bedroom villas at Kidani are a game-changer. Not only do you get space to spread out, but you also get a fully-equipped kitchen and in-room laundry.

In-Room Features
- Mini fridge, coffee maker, and safe
- TV with Disney+
- Desk and storage
- Split bathroom layout (tub/toilet separate from sinks)

Rooms are themed in warm earth tones with subtle animal prints and African-inspired décor. They’re not ultra-modern, but they feel cozy and immersive. Some rooms have bunk beds, which is a fun option for families.

Views and Upgrades
Here’s the deal: if you book a standard or pool view room, you might save money—but you also miss out on the wow factor. And you might be looking at the parking lot. It’s not a game changer because there are plenty of wildlife viewpoints. But, the savanna view rooms are the real stars. You’ll see giraffes, kudu, ankole cattle, zebras, and more—right from your balcony.

Animal Kingdom Lodge is home to over 30 different species of African wildlife that roam the resort’s four savannas. There are spectacular views throughout the resort, but there is something truly special about pretending you are in one of the legendary African lodges, as you eat breakfast within view of a giraffe.

We often found ourselves rushing back from the parks early just to watch the animals before sunset.

🏊 Pools, Recreation, and Resort Amenities
Main Pool Area Features
Both Jambo House and Kidani Village have excellent pool areas. The main pool at Jambo House, Uzima Springs or Uzima Pool, is large, heated year-round, and zero-entry—perfect for little ones. It has a 67-foot-long waterslide that is a huge hit with kids.

Kidani Village’s Samawati Springs Pool is a bit smaller but comes with a fantastic splash area called Uwanja Camp, which has water cannons, climbing structures, and mini slides. If you have toddlers or preschoolers, this area is gold.
I always found plenty of seating, and there’s poolside dining at both locations.

Other Recreation Options
- Campfire activities with marshmallows (free!)
- Movies under the stars on the lawn
- Cultural storytelling from African cast members
- Night-vision animal viewing at the overlooks
- Playgrounds, arcades with a good number of video games, and scavenger hunts
- Simba’s Clubhouse: a great (and indoor) kid’s play area with daily crafts and activities

This resort is packed with activities—and many of them are included at no extra charge. It’s one of the few places where staying at the resort is part of the vacation fun.

One of the best things you can do at Animal Kingdom Lodge is just walk around the grounds. There are numerous wildlife viewing areas, along with informational displays to tell you about the savannah.

Starlight Safari
The Starlight Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is a unique, after-dark guided tour through the resort’s savannas, where guests use night vision goggles to spot over 30 species of African wildlife. Led by expert guides who are animal specialists, this one-hour experience offers a fascinating look at the animals’ nighttime behaviors and Disney’s conservation efforts. It’s available to guests ages 8 years of age and up for an additional fee and is a truly unforgettable way to end a Disney day on your own African safari adventure.
Cultural Representatives
One of the most special aspects of staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge is the opportunity to interact with African Cultural Representatives, cast members who come from various countries across the African continent. These incredible individuals lead daily educational activities, fun programs, and storytelling sessions, sharing firsthand knowledge about African traditions, languages, art, music, and wildlife. Whether you’re learning how to play traditional drums, discovering the meaning behind the resort’s artifacts, or simply asking questions at the animal viewing areas, their presence adds a layer of authenticity and cultural richness that makes the resort experience truly meaningful and unforgettable.

🍴 Dining at Animal Kingdom Lodge
Quick-Service Dining Options
- The Mara (Jambo House): Great for a quick breakfast or lunch. We loved the Zebra Domes and the African Stew. Mobile ordering makes it easy.
- Sanaa Lounge (Kidani): You can mobile order from here and take it back to your room, which is what we did after a pool day. Don’t skip the bread service!

Table-Service Restaurants or Lounge Options
- Boma – Flavors of Africa: This is one of the best buffets at Disney. Breakfast is a must-try (get the pap and eggs). Dinner offers everything from bobotie to ribs.
- Jiko – The Cooking Place: More upscale and adventurous. Not ideal for picky eaters, but it’s a foodie’s dream.
- Sanaa: Dining right next to the savanna. Even if you don’t stay at the resort, it’s worth booking dinner here. The butter chicken and naan bread? So, so good.
- Victoria Falls Lounge

Nearby or Walkable Dining
You’re not walking to Disney Springs or hopping over to another resort for snacks. But honestly? We didn’t miss that. With three standout table service restaurants and solid quick service, you’re totally covered.

🚍 Transportation and Park Access
Distance and Travel Time to Each Park
- Animal Kingdom: 5 minutes
- Hollywood Studios: 15–20 minutes
- EPCOT: 20–25 minutes
- Magic Kingdom: 25–30 minutes
The buses were surprisingly efficient during our stay—waits were rarely more than 10–15 minutes, and buses were clean and uncrowded.
Still, if park-hopping or midday breaks are a major part of your Disney strategy, the travel time could be a drawback.
Modes of Transportation
Buses only. No Monorail, no boat, no Skyliner. It’s the one real downside—but the trade-off is the total immersion and quiet.

👨👩👧👦 What Makes Animal Kingdom Lodge Great for Families?
Kid-Friendly Features
- Animals just steps from your room
- Cultural activities and cast member interactions
- Pools and splash zones
- Easy food options, including familiar choices
- It feels safe, calm, and easy to navigate

Room Options for Larger Families
Kidani Village is perfect for families of 5 or more. We met a family of six staying in a 2-bedroom villa with a full kitchen, washer/dryer, and two bathrooms. They were living the dream.
If you want that “home away from home” feel on vacation, this is the way to go.
💰 Pricing and Value for Money
Typical Price Range
- Standard rooms: $450–$650
- Savanna view rooms: $600–$850
- Villas: $700 and up, depending on size
While this is a Deluxe Resort, it often costs less than the Monorail resorts—especially if you book a special offer or stay during a lower-demand season.

Best Time to Stay for Value
Mid-January, late August, and early September tend to have the best pricing. We booked during a winter promotion and saved almost 25%.

🎯 Final Verdict: Who Should Stay Here?
Animal Kingdom Lodge is ideal if:
- You want a slower-paced Disney vacation
- Your kids are animal lovers
- You’re looking for something truly unique
- You’re okay with relying on buses and staying outside the central resort loop
It might not be perfect for:
- Hardcore park-hoppers
- Families who want to rope drop Magic Kingdom every day
- Guests who prefer ultra-modern hotel design
But for us? It was one of our favorite Disney resort stays to date. We loved how relaxing it felt after a busy park day, and the animal experience alone made it unforgettable.
If you’re on the fence, I say go for the Savanna View. It’s not just a hotel room—it’s an experience your kids will be talking about for years.
