Animal Kingdom Early Entry Strategy: How to Beat Flight of Passage Crowds

Learn how to use early entry at Animal Kingdom to avoid long lines, ride Flight of Passage faster, and plan a stress-free park day with this step-by-step strategy.
How to Use Early Entry at Animal Kingdom to Avoid Long Lines and Have a Relaxed Day
If you’re staying at a Disney World resort (or one of the eligible hotels), the early theme park entry benefit is one of the easiest ways to improve your day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
But here’s the thing…
Animal Kingdom early entry is not like Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios.
There are fewer rides.
Fewer decisions.
And one very obvious fork in the road.
So instead of overcomplicating it, this guide is going to show you exactly how to:
- Decide your early entry strategy (in about 30 seconds)
- Get ahead of the crowds (without stressing)
- And set yourself up for a shockingly chill rest of the day

Quick Refresher: What Is Early Entry at Animal Kingdom?
If you’re staying at Disney resort hotels or other eligible hotels, you can enter Disney’s Animal Kingdom 30 minutes before regular park opening.
This replaced the old Extra Magic Hours, and it’s now standard across all Walt Disney World theme parks.
But instead of rehashing everything here…
👉 If you want the full breakdown, check out my full Early Entry guide (timing, eligibility, etc.)
For now, just know this:
- You need valid admission
- You need to be an eligible guest
- You get 30 minutes of early entry
- And yes… it absolutely matters at Animal Kingdom
The Lay of the Land: What’s Actually Open?
This is where Animal Kingdom is very different.
During the early entry period, not everything is open.
Here’s what you can expect:
Open During Early Entry:
- Avatar Flight of Passage
- Na’vi River Journey
- Expedition Everest
Typically NOT Open:
- Kilimanjaro Safaris
- Kali River Rapids
- All shows (Festival of the Lion King, Nemo, etc.)
- Animal trails (Gorilla Falls, Maharajah Jungle Trek)
So right away… your options are limited.
And that’s actually a good thing.
Because it makes your early entry strategy very clear.

The Most Important Decision: Flight of Passage… or Not?
This is it.
This is the entire game.
👉 Are you heading straight to Avatar Flight of Passage… or skipping it?
Because that decision determines everything about your early morning.

Option 1: Go Straight to Flight of Passage (Most Popular Strategy)
Flight of Passage is still the most popular attraction at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
And yes—this is where the longest lines form.
Even during early entry.
Here’s the reality:
- The posted wait time will climb quickly
- The flight of passage queue fills up fast
- If you’re not near the front of the pack, you will wait
But…
If you do it right?
You can still get a shorter wait than later in the day.
What This Looks Like:
- You arrive early
- You walk with purpose (yes… this matters)
- You follow cast members into Pandora
- You join the standby line before it spikes
👉 This is your best chance to ride with a minimal wait
Option 2: Skip Flight of Passage (Underrated Strategy)
This is honestly my favorite approach for a lot of families.
Because while everyone else rushes to Pandora…
You get the rest of the park to yourself.
What You Can Do Instead:
- Ride Expedition Everest (often multiple times)
- Ride Na’vi River Journey with a pretty short wait
- Be first in line for Kilimanjaro Safaris at rope drop
And here’s the kicker:
👉 You can stack multiple rides with almost no wait times
This is one of the few parks where skipping the most popular ride can actually improve your day.

What Time Does Early Entry Actually Start?
Officially, early entry starts 30 minutes before park opening.
Example:
- Park opening: 8:00 AM
- Early entry starts: 7:30 AM
But in reality?
👉 It often starts earlier.
Cast members frequently begin letting guests in before the official start of early entry.
That means:
- You may be through the park gate before 7:30
- You may already be walking toward rides before official opening
- Some rides may begin cycling slightly early
This is especially important for Flight of Passage strategy.
Because those first guests?
They get the biggest advantage.

What Time Should You Arrive?
If you want to take full advantage of early entry, timing matters.
Here’s what I recommend:
Best Arrival Time:
👉 45–60 minutes before early entry starts
So if early entry starts at 7:30…
➡️ Aim to arrive by 6:30–6:45 AM
Yes. It’s early.
But this is how you become part of the front of the line.

Transportation Strategy (This Matters More Than You Think)
If you rely on Disney transportation, you’re at the mercy of their schedule.
And for Animal Kingdom…
👉 That can be risky.
Disney Buses:
- Typically start running ~60 minutes before early entry
- Can get crowded fast
- You may not be in the first wave of guests
Best Strategy:
👉 Take a Lyft or Uber
This gives you:
- Control over your timing
- A better chance at being among the first guests
- Less stress overall
This is especially important if you’re aiming for Flight of Passage.

Step-by-Step: What Early Entry Actually Feels Like
Here’s how it typically plays out:
- You arrive at the park gate early
- Cast members begin letting guests through security
- You scan in and enter the park
- You’re held briefly (sometimes)
- You’re released toward Pandora or Asia
- You walk quickly (but not running… obviously 😅)
- You join your first ride
And from there…
👉 Everything moves fast
Because during early entry, the standby line moves quickly.

How Early Entry Sets Up Your Entire Day
This is where Animal Kingdom really shines.
If you use early entry well…
👉 You can eliminate the need for Lightning Lane Multi Pass entirely
Seriously.
Because:
- You knock out major rides early
- Avoid long lines later
- And you can take your time with shows and animals
This is the park where early entry gives you the most extra time for the rest of the day.
Breakfast Options During Early Entry
You won’t go hungry—there are a few solid options open early:
- Creature Comforts (Starbucks)
- Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery
- Tamu Tamu Refreshments
- Pongu Pongu
You’ll find:
- Coffee (essential 😄)
- Pastries
- Breakfast sandwiches
- Pongu Pongu’s famous Night Blossom and Lumpia
👉 This makes it easy to grab something quick without slowing down your morning

Real-Life Example: What This Actually Looks Like
Let me show you exactly how this played out for us:
April 21 – Animal Kingdom Early Entry Day
- 7:01 AM – Left resort (Lyft)
- 7:59 AM – Through the park gate
- 8:10 AM – In line for Flight of Passage
- 9:16 AM – Boarding (pre-show)
👉 This is the trade-off. Even with early entry, Flight of Passage can still be a long ride.
From there:
- 9:41 AM – Breakfast at Pongu Pongu
- 10:18 AM – Bird show near Tree of Life
- 10:47 AM – Finding Nemo show
- ~11:15 AM – DINOSAUR
- 11:39 AM – It’s Tough to Be a Bug
Lunch + afternoon:
- 12:57 PM – late lunch at Yak & Yeti
- 1:27 PM – Feathered Friends in Flight
- 2:06 PM – Expedition Everest (single rider → on in 6 minutes!)
- 2:55 PM – Train to Conservation Station
- 3:11 PM – Animation Experience
Later:
- 4:11 PM – Kilimanjaro Safaris
- 5:00 PM – Festival of the Lion King
- 5:56 PM – Flame Tree BBQ
And we were done by:
👉 6:50 PM back at the resort

Why This Worked So Well
A few key reasons:
1. Early Entry Gave Us a Head Start
We knocked out the hardest ride first.
2. The Rest of the Park Was Easy
No pressure or rushing. And no chasing wait times.
3. We Didn’t Need Multi Pass
We used standby lines and single rider strategically.
4. We Still Had Energy to Park Hop
This is the underrated benefit of Animal Kingdom.
Alternative Scenario (Honestly… Even Better)
If you skip Flight of Passage?
Here’s what your morning could look like:
- Ride Expedition Everest 2–3 times
- Ride Na’vi River Journey
- Grab a snack/breakfast
- Be first for Kilimanjaro Safaris
👉 All before the park even feels busy
That’s a huge win.
Bottom Line: Is Animal Kingdom Early Entry Worth It?
Yes. 100%.
And honestly?
👉 This might be the best use of early entry across all Walt Disney World theme parks.
Because:
- There are fewer rides
- The strategy is simple
- The payoff is huge
You either:
- Knock out Flight of Passage early
OR - Knock out everything else and cruise through your day
Either way…
👉 You’re setting yourself up for a great start and a relaxed rest of the day

Final Thoughts: Keep It Simple
If you take one thing from this guide, let it be this:
👉 Don’t overthink Animal Kingdom early entry
Decide your plan:
- Flight of Passage
or - Everything else
Show up early.
Walk with purpose.
Follow the flow.
And you’ll be ahead of 90% of people in the park.
