San Angel Inn Restaurante Review: Is It Worth It?

San Angel Inn Restaurante review

Wondering if San Angel Inn Restaurante is worth it? Read my honest review of EPCOT’s iconic Mexico Pavilion restaurant, including food, atmosphere, prices, and tips.

For some reason, I kept putting off eating at San Angel Inn.

I’ve walked through the Mexico Pavilion more times than I can count, looked over at the restaurant, thought, “That looks really cool,” and then kept walking to somewhere else.

I honestly don’t know why.

This trip, I finally decided it was time to change that.

What’s funny is that I’d already eaten at La Hacienda de San Angel earlier in the week and absolutely loved it. So I wasn’t even sure I needed another Mexican table service restaurant in EPCOT. I figured one of them would clearly be better than the other.

Turns out, I was wrong.

The two restaurants couldn’t be more different.

La Hacienda is all about the waterfront views of World Showcase Lagoon.

San Angel Inn is all about the atmosphere.

Eating dinner under the permanent twilight sky inside the Mexico Pavilion, with the volcano in the distance and the Gran Fiesta Tour boats quietly floating past, is one of the most unique dining experiences anywhere at Walt Disney World.

And thankfully, the food lives up to the setting.

I walked away genuinely impressed by this meal. The queso fundido was every bit as good as I’d hoped, my carne asada was packed with flavor, dessert was the perfect ending to the meal, and the service was excellent from start to finish.

It ended up being one of my favorite table service dinners of the entire trip.

Ironically, after I got home, I discovered this wasn’t actually my first visit to San Angel Inn…

✨ My First Visit to San Angel Inn (1987)

Me at 14 years old inside San Angel Inn in 1987 after winning a Walt Disney World trip through my newspaper route.
I don’t remember the meal—but I definitely remembered the mariachi band!

One funny thing about writing this review is that I completely forgot I’d actually eaten here before.

After we got home, I was digging through old family photo albums looking for Disney pictures when I found this one. That’s me at 14 years old inside San Angel Inn with the mariachi band.

Then it all came flooding back.

Back in 1987, I was one of those actual, honest-to-goodness newspaper carriers. You know…the kind who rode their bike around the neighborhood tossing newspapers onto people’s porches before school.

Very Gen X. 😂

That year, the Times Union newspaper in Albany, New York, was “modernizing” by putting all of its subscriber information into a computer system.

Yes…a computer system.

Apparently, before that, all of the route information lived on paper.

Every newspaper carrier had to either type—or, if you didn’t have a typewriter, very neatly handwrite—the names, addresses, and subscription information for every single customer on their route so it could all be entered into the new system.

Everyone who completed the project was entered into a drawing for a Walt Disney World vacation.

And somehow…

…I won.

Looking back, I realize what an incredible gift that trip really was. I’m honestly not sure my family would have been able to afford a Disney vacation otherwise, so winning that contest gave me memories that have lasted a lifetime.

Including this one.

The funny thing is, I don’t remember a single thing about the meal itself. I couldn’t tell you what I ordered or whether I even liked it.

But apparently I thought getting my picture taken with the mariachi band was a pretty big deal.

Coming back nearly 40 years later felt strangely full circle.

This time, I may not have gotten another picture with the mariachi band…

…but I finally have a meal at San Angel Inn that I’ll actually remember.

First Impressions & Atmosphere

One thing that really surprised me on this trip is that the Mexico Pavilion has two legitimately fantastic table service restaurants.

I had already reviewed La Hacienda de San Angel, and I loved that meal.

Then we came here…

…and I loved this one too.

The biggest difference is the atmosphere.

Walking into the Mexico Pavilion is one of those Disney experiences that never gets old. You leave the bright Florida sunshine behind, and suddenly it’s nighttime. The lanterns are glowing, the volcano is puffing smoke in the distance, and the boats from Gran Fiesta Tour quietly drift past while everyone is eating dinner.

It’s just really cool.

We didn’t even have one of the tables right next to the water. I know those are the ones everybody hopes for, but honestly, I didn’t feel like we missed out on anything.

Our table was farther back, and it was still a wonderful experience. The entire restaurant is so immersive that I don’t think there’s really a bad seat in the house.

The service was also excellent. Everyone we interacted with was friendly, our server was attentive without hovering, and the meal moved along at a comfortable pace. We never felt rushed, but we also weren’t sitting around wondering where our food was.

Sometimes Disney restaurants have amazing theming, but the food doesn’t quite live up to the setting.

That definitely wasn’t the case here.

What We Ordered

Honestly, everything we ordered was a hit.

Queso Fundido

We started with the queso fundido, and if you’ve read my review of La Hacienda de San Angel, this is going to sound really familiar.

Because I honestly think they’re almost identical.

And that’s perfectly fine with me.

It’s bubbling hot Monterey Jack cheese topped with chorizo, poblano peppers, and onions, served with warm flour tortillas.

I mean…warm tortillas dipped into melted cheese.

That’s never a bad idea.

The cheese was perfectly gooey, the chorizo added just enough spice without overwhelming everything else, and it disappeared a whole lot faster than I expected.

I’d absolutely order it again.

Carne Asada

Apparently, I have a habit of ordering steak at Disney World.

If a restaurant has a steak on the menu and it sounds good, chances are that’s what I’m going to order.

On this trip alone, I had steak at Hollywood Brown Derby, Topolino’s Terrace, and now San Angel Inn.

The carne asada definitely held its own.

The strip steak was cooked exactly the way I ordered it and had really great flavor. It came with cheese enchiladas, roasted vegetables, and corn ribs, and I thought everything on the plate worked really well together.

I especially liked that it didn’t feel like they just threw a steak on the menu for people who don’t want Mexican food. The enchiladas made the whole meal feel like it belonged here.

I’d happily order it again.

Chocolate Brownie

By the time dessert came around, we were definitely full.

Did we still order the brownie?

Absolutely.

We had walked something like 15,000 steps around EPCOT that day, and honestly, I wanted all the chocolate and ice cream to myself.

The brownie was warm, rich, and topped with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Could we have shared it?

Probably.

Did we?

Nope.

And I have zero regrets.

Cost & Value

San Angel Inn definitely falls into the “special occasion” category when it comes to Disney dining prices, but I walked away feeling like we got our money’s worth.

Our meal included an appetizer, entrées, dessert, and drinks, so it certainly wasn’t cheap. But when I look back on all the table service restaurants we tried during this trip, this is one that I would happily pay for again.

The atmosphere alone is something you really can’t replicate anywhere else in Disney World. You’re eating inside the Mexico Pavilion with the boats drifting by and the volcano in the background. Add in genuinely good food and excellent service, and it starts to feel like a pretty good value despite the higher price tag.

If you’re using the Disney Dining Plan, I think this is a solid use of a table service credit. If you’re paying out of pocket, I’d still recommend it, especially if you’re looking for one memorable meal in EPCOT.

Reservations & Availability

San Angel Inn is popular, and for good reason.

The combination of the unique atmosphere and its location inside the Mexico Pavilion means reservations can disappear fairly quickly, especially during holidays and festival seasons.

I’d definitely recommend making an Advance Dining Reservation if this restaurant is on your must-do list.

That said, don’t completely give up if you can’t find one.

People change their plans all the time, and reservations often pop up in the days leading up to a trip. I’ve also had decent luck checking the My Disney Experience app throughout the day for last-minute cancellations.

If you have a little flexibility, lunch can sometimes be easier to book than dinner.

Is San Angel Inn Good for Kids?

Absolutely.

Even though I think this restaurant has a romantic atmosphere that’s perfect for couples, I also saw plenty of families enjoying dinner while we were there.

Kids usually get a kick out of watching the boats from Gran Fiesta Tour float past, and the restaurant isn’t so quiet that you’ll feel stressed if your little one gets excited.

That said, if you have an extremely picky eater, I’d take a look at the menu before making a reservation. The menu definitely leans more authentic than your typical Tex-Mex restaurant, although there are still several approachable options.

I actually think this is one of those restaurants that works for almost everyone—families, couples, solo travelers, or even a fun dinner with friends.

Location & Convenience

San Angel Inn is located inside the Mexico Pavilion at EPCOT’s World Showcase.

One of the coolest parts about eating here is that the restaurant is actually inside the pavilion itself. After walking through the marketplace, you’ll eventually come to the restaurant overlooking the Gran Fiesta Tour boat ride.

It’s impossible to miss.

Because it’s inside EPCOT, you’ll need valid park admission in addition to your dining reservation.

I also think this restaurant works especially well as a dinner reservation. After spending the day exploring World Showcase, it feels like a nice way to slow down, enjoy a great meal, and then head back outside for the nighttime spectacular.

Final Verdict: Is San Angel Inn Worth It?

Absolutely.

I honestly can’t believe I waited this long to come back.

Between the atmosphere, the food, and the service, this ended up being one of my favorite table service meals of the trip. I expected the ambiance to be incredible because everyone talks about eating inside the Mexico Pavilion.

What surprised me was just how much I enjoyed the food.

Would I still choose La Hacienda de San Angel?

Honestly…I don’t know.

I loved both restaurants, but for completely different reasons.

If you want waterfront views of World Showcase Lagoon, I’d lean toward La Hacienda.

If you want one of the most immersive dining experiences anywhere at Walt Disney World, I’d pick San Angel Inn.

The good news?

I don’t think you can go wrong with either one.

Would I eat here again? Without hesitation.

One Tip Before You Go

If you’re hoping for one of the tables right along the water where the Gran Fiesta Tour boats pass by, ask politely when you check in.

There’s no guarantee they’ll be available, but it never hurts to ask.

And honestly? Even if you end up farther back like we did, don’t be disappointed.

The entire restaurant is beautiful, and after eating here, I don’t think there’s a bad seat in the house.
