Set aside time every day for a dedicated journaling routine
If you want something to become a habit, you need to work it into your day first. Do you tend to get busy during the middle of the day? Then don’t save your journaling time for the middle of the day! If you have a lot of free time at night then that might be the best time to journal.
If you are finding that there is no good time for you, then you may need to start getting up earlier. By starting your day with journaling, you won’t skip it no matter how busy your day gets.
Set a reminder for it in your phone
If you are forgetful, having a reminder in your phone to remind you to journal could be a good idea. This is especially important if you are going to be journaling throughout the day instead of all in one go.
Bring your journal with you everywhere you go
Despite being a busy person and having a ton of things to do each day, there are often pockets in my day where I don’t have anything to do. When I’m waiting for a doctor’s appointment or waiting to pick my kids up from somewhere, I find myself with free time! Use those moments to journal!
This is why it’s important to bring your journal with you wherever you go. This way you can always journal when inspiration strikes!
Start with prompts and other helpful starting spots
Journaling prompts and questions are a great way to get into the habit of journaling because there is a reason to check back in every day. When you have a prompt it will give you guidance. When you have a question to answer, you know you need to come back each day in order to answer the next question.
If you are finding yourself without any inspiration, keep these handy for days when you need an extra push, and create a challenge for yourself to keep you motivated to journal daily.
It’s okay to go outside of writing
If you started your journal with the intention of writing, that doesn’t mean it has to stay that way! If you want to start doodling in your journal or drawing, go for it! The purpose of journaling is to create a creative outlet for yourself, even if it’s not what you originally thought it would be.
Whether you just want to get in the habit of journaling, or you are just looking to make your journaling more consistent, these tips will help you start a journaling routine.
