Getting to the Bar T 5 Cookout and Show

The Bar T 5 headquarters are conveniently located in Jackson near Snow King Mountain. Once you get there, the check-in process is super laid-back. Wander around the orientation area, do a little shopping, and then lounge on the benches provided.

One of the head cowboys will then give a short orientation to everyone gathered about what to expect, and how the evening will flow. He also tells you what covered wagon your family is riding in (this detail is fun to find out).

The real cowboys (and cowgirls) then step up with easy smiles and dusty boots. The wranglers help everyone clamber into the covered wagons hitched to teams of draft horses. As soon as those wheels start rolling, people stop taking pictures and the phones go back into pockets. Conversations spring back up.

It’s only a twenty-minute wagon ride to the cookout site, but you feel a million miles from the world of schedules and screens when the wagons roll into camp. It’s easy to imagine the original homesteaders coming in on their covered wagons in the early days, just minus the silly wrangler cracking jokes about bear spray.

Everyone hangs out of the wagon to watch the horses’ tails swish back and forth. As you approach the cookout location, cowboys appear and have to fend off some outlaws who are trying to attack the group. It’s totally hokey and your kids will love every minute of it.

Cookout at the Bar T 5 Show

Once the wagons stop and the horses are hitched up, you get a whiff of supper. Smoky, savory, you can’t resist. A couple of long wooden tables are already set up in a clearing, and a row of Dutch ovens is steaming happily near the fire. The cooks yell out for everyone to hit the chow line, and it’s time to go.

There’s nothing fancy here. That’s the whole point.

Roast beef, tender and rich with homemade gravy, BBQ chicken that literally falls off the bone, baked beans, coleslaw, biscuits hot from the pan, and a bubbling cobbler for dessert. It’s all hearty, old-school camp-style food, but tastes way better than it has any right to after a day spent outdoors.

Don’t expect five star gourmet food. But you know what your tastebuds crave after a long day outside? Hot, simple food, with a hint of wood smoke and dust on top. You can (and will) go back for seconds, and everyone ends up with gravy stains on their sleeves.

The Western Show

Lanterns are lit and the Bar T-5 Band tunes up. A fiddle squeaks, someone cracks a joke and suddenly the canyon is alive with sound.

The show is a mix of cowboy ballads, bluegrass, and the kind of humor that sneaks up on you. It’s silly enough for kids, clever enough for adults. Sing-alongs, a few “volunteers” from the audience, and a whole lot of laughter.

Most of the band and wranglers grew up here. They’ve branded cattle, guided horseback rides, shoveled snow. You know they’re not actors, you know they’re neighbors sharing the stories their families have always told. That’s what makes it work.

Kids are dancing in the dirt by the time the last song ends, grandparents are tapping their boots. Someone usually yells “Encore!” and honestly everyone means it.

My personal favorite part of the show was the fiddle. She was amazing, and her rendition of ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia’ had me hootin’ and hollering.

Hospitality, Wyoming Style

The thing that stays with you long after the corny jokes have faded is the kindness of everyone around you. The wranglers pass hot chocolate, clear plates, share stories of wild winters and the moose that wander into Jackson.

That’s western hospitality in its truest form: no rush, no script, just good people.

You get the feeling this is not just a show they put on for tourists. It’s family history they’re proud to share.

Tips Before You Go

Book early. Summer reservations fill up quickly, especially around holidays.

Layer up. Even in July the canyon is chilly after dark.

Bring cash for tips. The wranglers and musicians more than earn it.

Arrive hungry. You’ll want seconds. Maybe thirds.

Lean in. The cornier the jokes, the more fun you’ll have.

Wrapping up Dinner and a Show at Bar T 5

The Bar T 5 Covered Wagon Cookout and Show is not polished or fancy, and that’s exactly why it’s so special. You’ll ride in a wagon through a canyon that smells like pine and campfire, eat food cooked in Dutch ovens, and laugh with strangers who feel like friends by the time dessert is passed.

From the first creak of wagon wheels to the last note from the Bar T-5 Band, it’s honest. Real.

If you’re visiting Grand Teton or Yellowstone National Parks, save an evening for this. Your kids will talk about it on the drive home, and you’ll find yourself smiling every time you smell smoke and gravy in the kitchen again.
