Estimated reading time: 17 minutes
If you told me I had to book another trip to Banff tomorrow and could only stay at one hotel, I probably wouldn’t spend very long debating my options.
I’d book the Moose Hotel & Suites again.
That’s not something I say lightly. One of the fun parts of traveling is trying different hotels, lodges, and resorts. But every once in a while you find a property that just checks all the boxes. Great location. Comfortable rooms. Excellent amenities. Friendly staff. A restaurant you actually want to eat at more than once.
For our Canadian Rockies trip, the Moose Hotel & Suites ended up being exactly that kind of place.
What surprised me most wasn’t any one feature. It was how well everything worked together. After spending long days exploring Lake Minnewanka, Johnston Canyon, the Banff Gondola, and Moraine Lake, it was incredibly nice to come back to a hotel that felt like part of the vacation instead of just a place to sleep.
And then there was that rooftop hot tub.
I’m getting ahead of myself.
If you’re trying to decide where to stay in Banff and you’re looking for a hotel that works well for families, couples, retirees, and casual national park travelers, here’s my honest review after staying at the Moose Hotel & Suites.

Absolutely.
In fact, it would probably be my first choice for a future Banff trip.

What Makes the Moose Hotel So Special?
I’ve stayed in plenty of hotels that had nice rooms.
And I have stayed in hotels with great locations.
Most of these hotels have nice pools.
The Moose Hotel is one of the few places where all of those things came together.
The biggest challenge in Banff is deciding whether you want convenience or atmosphere.
Many properties on the edges of town offer slightly quieter settings, but then you’re driving or walking farther every time you want dinner, shopping, coffee, or ice cream.
The Moose Hotel manages to give you both.
It sits right on Banff Avenue, close enough that you can easily walk to restaurants, shops, and attractions, but it still feels like a mountain lodge retreat when you step inside.
The wood finishes, stone accents, oversized fireplaces, and mountain-lodge aesthetic immediately make it feel like you’re in the Canadian Rockies.
Several times during our stay I found myself sitting in the lobby or rooftop area simply enjoying the atmosphere.
That’s usually a sign a hotel got things right.

Location: One of the Best in Banff
If location matters to you, this hotel is hard to beat.
The Moose Hotel sits along Banff Avenue, which is essentially the main street running through town.
From the hotel, we walked almost everywhere.

That included:
- Restaurants
- Coffee shops
- Souvenir stores
- Outdoor outfitters
- Grocery stores
- Downtown Banff attractions
One of my favorite parts of staying here was not having to think about parking every evening.
After spending all day exploring the park, we’d park the car and simply walk wherever we wanted.
Need dinner?
Walk.
Need ice cream?
Walk.
Want to browse shops after sunset?
Walk.
That convenience adds up over several days.
For first-time visitors especially, I think staying within easy walking distance of downtown Banff dramatically improves the overall experience.
The Rooms
We stayed in a suite, and I thought it struck a nice balance between comfort and practicality.
The décor felt modern mountain lodge rather than rustic cabin.
Lots of warm wood tones.
Neutral colors.
Comfortable furniture.

Nothing overly fancy, but definitely upscale and well-maintained.
One thing I appreciated was that the room felt designed for actual travelers.
There was space to spread out.
Space to organize gear.
Space to relax after long sightseeing days.
The separate bedroom was especially nice.

For families or anyone staying multiple nights, having dedicated sleeping and living areas makes a huge difference.
Instead of everyone sitting on beds at the end of the day, there was an actual living room space where we could unwind.
The suite also included:
- Mini refrigerator
- Microwave
- Coffee maker
- Sink area
- Dining table
- Balcony
Those small conveniences become surprisingly valuable during a longer national park vacation.

The Balcony
Our balcony wasn’t huge, but it was large enough for two chairs and a quiet morning coffee.
I always appreciate outdoor space in mountain destinations.
Even if you’re not sitting outside for hours, it’s nice to step outside in the morning and immediately feel connected to the surroundings.
The balcony added another layer of relaxation to the room.

The Bathroom
Hotel bathrooms don’t usually earn their own section in my reviews.
This one deserves a quick mention.
The bathroom was modern, clean, and nicely updated.
I particularly liked the large walk-in shower.
After long days of hiking, sightseeing, and wandering around Banff, having a spacious shower felt wonderful.
The finishes throughout the bathroom felt upscale without feeling overly luxurious or pretentious.
Everything simply worked well.

The Little Details I Appreciated
One thing I noticed throughout our stay was attention to small details.
For example, the hotel uses products from Rocky Mountain Soap Company.
If you’ve spent much time in Banff, you’ve probably seen their stores around town.

The toiletries had a pleasant lemongrass scent that felt very different from the generic hotel products you find almost everywhere else.
Was that a major factor in choosing the hotel?
Of course not.
Did it contribute to the overall experience?
Absolutely.
The same goes for the mountain-inspired artwork, lodge décor, fireplaces, and overall atmosphere.
Nothing felt random.
Everything reinforced the feeling that you were staying in the Canadian Rockies.
The Rooftop Pool and Hot Tubs
This is where the Moose Hotel separates itself from many other Banff properties.
The rooftop aquatic area is phenomenal.
And honestly?
It’s probably the single biggest reason I’d stay here again.

After a full day of exploring Banff National Park, there is something magical about sinking into a hot tub while staring at mountain peaks.
I know that sounds like tourism brochure copy.
But it’s true.
The rooftop area includes:
- Heated pool
- Multiple hot tubs
- Lounge seating
- Mountain views
- Fire pits
- Relaxation areas
Every evening felt a little different.
Some nights we visited before dinner.
Other nights we relaxed after sunset.
No matter when we went, the setting felt special.
I travel to national parks because I love being surrounded by incredible scenery.

The rooftop hot tubs let you enjoy that scenery even when you’re not actively exploring.
For casual travelers especially, this is a huge advantage.
Not every memorable national park moment has to happen on a trail.
Sometimes it happens while sitting in a hot tub with the mountains in front of you.
Don’t Skip the Sauna
The rooftop sauna ended up being another pleasant surprise.
I’ll admit this wasn’t a feature I paid much attention to before arriving.
Once I tried it, though, I understood why people love it.
The combination of sauna, hot tub, mountain views, and cool mountain air created a genuinely relaxing experience.
After several busy sightseeing days, it felt wonderful.

The Fire Pits
Another feature I loved was the rooftop fire pit area.
The Canadian Rockies are one of those destinations where evenings can stay pleasantly cool even during summer.
Having outdoor fire pits creates a natural gathering place.
People linger.
Conversations happen.
You slow down.
Travel can sometimes become a race from one attraction to the next.
The rooftop area encouraged the opposite.

The Lobby Is Actually Worth Hanging Out In
Many hotel lobbies are simply places you walk through.
Not this one.
The lobby at the Moose Hotel feels like an upscale mountain lodge.

The soaring ceilings, massive stone fireplace, comfortable seating, and warm wood architecture make it an inviting space.
There were several moments during our stay when people were simply relaxing, reading, chatting, or enjoying the atmosphere.
That’s usually a good sign.
A great hotel creates spaces where guests actually want to spend time.

Dining at Pacini: Better Than Expected
One of the unexpected highlights of our stay was the on-site restaurant.
Pacini isn’t just a convenient option.
It’s actually good.

In fact, we ended up eating there multiple times during our stay.
That’s probably the strongest endorsement I can give.
If you’ve ever traveled to a busy tourist destination, you know how easy it is to eat somewhere once and then move on.
Instead, we kept coming back.
The Toast Bar
Let’s talk about the toast bar.
Because yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like.
And yes, it’s surprisingly fun.
Pacini offers a self-serve toast station where guests can grill different types of bread and add spreads and toppings.
It’s one of those quirky features that sounds odd until you’re standing there doing it.
Then you realize everyone is smiling.
It’s memorable.
It’s different.
And it adds a little personality to the dining experience.
I’ve stayed at a lot of hotels.
I’ve never encountered a toast bar before.

Our Meals at Pacini
Everything we ordered was consistently good.
The pizza was excellent.
The pasta was very good.
Dessert was outstanding.

Service was friendly and efficient.
Most importantly, the restaurant never felt like a place we were settling for simply because it was attached to the hotel.
It felt like a legitimate dining destination.

For travelers arriving after a long day of sightseeing, having a quality restaurant downstairs is incredibly convenient.

Who Should Stay at the Moose Hotel?
I think this hotel appeals to a surprisingly wide range of travelers.
First-Time Banff Visitors
This is probably my top recommendation.
The location makes exploring Banff incredibly easy.
You can spend less time figuring things out and more time enjoying your trip.
Families
The suite layouts work well for families.
The pool and hot tubs provide built-in entertainment.
The walkable location makes life easier.
Couples
The rooftop hot tubs, mountain views, fire pits, and lodge atmosphere create a romantic setting.
Retirees
The convenience factor cannot be overstated.
Being able to walk to dining and shopping while enjoying resort-style amenities is a huge advantage.
Casual National Park Travelers
This is where I fit.
I love national parks, scenery, and wildlife.
There is zero need for me to backpack into the wilderness for five days to enjoy a destination.
The Moose Hotel complements that travel style perfectly.

A Few Things to Know Before Booking
No hotel is perfect.
A few things worth noting:
Book Early
The Moose Hotel is popular.
For good reason.
If you’re visiting during summer, book as early as possible.
Expect Premium Pricing
This is not a budget hotel.
Banff is expensive in general, and the Moose Hotel is one of the more desirable properties in town.
That said, I felt we received good value for what we paid.
The Rooftop Area Can Be Busy
Especially during peak travel periods.
The views are fantastic, so don’t expect to have the rooftop entirely to yourself.
Pro Tips
Request a Room Away From Busy Street Traffic
Banff Avenue can be active during summer.
If you’re sensitive to noise, request a quieter room location.
Use the Rooftop Hot Tubs More Than Once
Seriously.
Don’t save it for your final evening.
Use the rooftop facilities multiple times during your stay.
Eat at Pacini At Least Once
Even if you plan to try other restaurants around town, make time for a meal here.
Spend Time in the Lobby
It sounds silly, but the common areas are part of what makes this hotel special.
Stay at Least Three Nights
Banff deserves more than a quick overnight visit, and the Moose Hotel is a place you’ll actually enjoy returning to each evening.
