10 Tips to Survive a Long Haul Flight

Nobody likes being stuck in a seat for hours on end, but these tips to survive a long haul flight will make it much better!

Long flights are the worst. You are trapped in a small airline seat while you travel thousands of miles to your destination. At some point in your life, you will likely have to make the same kind of flight. After many long flights, here are ten tips for surviving a long haul flight, so you don’t lose your mind.

How to Survive a Long Haul Flight

Wear Comfortable Clothes

Comfort is critical on a long flight. Make sure you wear clothes you can relax in. Now is not the time for high heels and tight pants.

Choose Your Seat Wisely

You will likely have to stay seated for most of your flight, so make sure that you choose the right seat. If you need extra legroom, consider a first-class or even an upgraded economy seat. Choosing between an aisle or window can also give you some extra legroom as well. If you can, avoid a middle seat.

Avoid Carrying On Too Much Stuff

Bringing too much stuff means you have more to keep track of. You won’t be able to use that much on your flight, so avoid carrying on too many items when you have long flights ahead of you.

Dress in Layers

Some flights will be blistering hot, while others will be freezing. Have a bunch of layers handy in case either scenario happens.

Plan to Sleep

Sleep will make your flight so much better. You will be able to catch up on sleep, and your flight will feel much shorter. On 10+ hour flights, you’ll likely need to sleep to avoid jet lag and being overtired when you land. If you are traveling between time zones, you need to decide if sleep is the best option.

Secure Your Belongings

Longer flights mean more of a chance for your items to shift while in flight. This goes for the bag at your feet and your overhead bin bag too. The last thing you want is a spilled bag with all your small belongings all over the cabin floor.

Bring Snacks and Drink Plenty of Water

Flight food is not ideal, but for a quick hour flight, it works in a pinch. On longer flights, come prepared with your own snacks and water to keep you hydrated and nourished until you land.

Bring Multiple Types of Entertainment

While you may have every intention of catching up on reading during your flight, you will get bored. Trust me. The you who packed that bag might be different from the one who is on the plane.

Get Up and Stretch Your Legs

Long flights can lead to swollen ankles and cramped legs. Get up and stretch your legs from time to time to loosen your muscles.

Don’t Be Afraid to Make Some New Friends

During a long flight, it might be okay to talk to the person next to you. You may find they have an incredible story but need the right person to listen to it!

Long flights can be unbearable, but these tips will make it easier. They even help you feel better when you land too!
