After a busy stretch of our Utah Mighty 5 road trip, Kanab ended up being one of those places that completely surprised me.

Honestly, I expected Kanab to be a quick overnight stop. Instead, it became one of my favorite towns of the entire trip.

Part of that was the location. Kanab sits in a sweet spot between Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, and several popular slot canyon tours.

But part of it was definitely our hotel.

The Canyons Boutique Hotel felt different from the moment we arrived. It wasn’t another generic roadside chain hotel. It wasn’t trying to be a luxury resort either. Instead, it struck a balance that I think a lot of travelers appreciate: comfortable, welcoming, a little unique, and genuinely memorable.

First Impressions

The first thing I noticed was that this place had character.

That’s becoming increasingly rare these days.

Many hotels feel like they were assembled from the same blueprint: gray walls, gray carpet, gray furniture, and a lobby that looks exactly like every other lobby you’ve visited in the past five years.

The Canyons Boutique Hotel felt different.

The exterior has a charming, almost lodge-like appearance. The lobby and breakfast area feature warm lighting, stone accents, fireplaces, and colorful glass artwork that immediately catches your eye.

The Chihuly-inspired glass chandeliers are particularly striking. They’re not something you’d expect to find in a relatively small hotel in southern Utah, and they give the common spaces a surprisingly upscale feel.

It felt less like checking into a hotel and more like arriving at a small inn.

The Room

We stayed in a room with two queen beds.

The décor leans more traditional than modern, but honestly, I didn’t mind.

The room felt spacious and comfortable, with plenty of room to spread out luggage after several days on the road.

What stood out most?

The beds.

I know every hotel claims to have comfortable beds, but these were actually memorable.

After long days of driving, sightseeing, and walking around national parks, getting a good night’s sleep becomes surprisingly important. I remember sinking into bed and thinking, “Yep. This is going to be a good night.”

The Bathroom

One of the unexpected perks was the bathroom.

Our room included a large whirlpool tub that felt much more luxurious than what you normally find at this price point.

Would I book this hotel solely because of the whirlpool tub?

Probably not.

Did I appreciate it after several days of hiking, driving, and climbing in and out of the car?

Absolutely.

The vanity area was spacious, there was plenty of room for toiletries, and everything felt clean and well maintained.

Again, nothing flashy.

Just comfortable and functional.

One thing that can be difficult to explain in a review is atmosphere.

Some hotels simply feel nicer than their price tag suggests.

That was the case here.

The common spaces felt thoughtfully designed rather than purely functional.

The breakfast area was attractive enough that people actually lingered instead of grabbing food and immediately leaving.

Not fancy.

This is where travel style really matters.

If your goal is to maximize every possible minute inside Zion National Park, stay in Springdale.

No question.

But if you’re taking a broader southern Utah road trip and want to explore multiple destinations, Kanab can make a lot of sense.

You’ll often find:

• Better hotel values
• More availability
• Less congestion
• Easier parking
• Access to a wider variety of attractions

For casual travelers—the audience I write for all the time—that tradeoff can be worth it.
