Coffee makes everything better, doesn’t it? And really, when you are out exploring it’s always good to know where you can get a hot drink (or a cold drink) and some great eats!
So, I polled my readers about what are the best coffee houses in Maryland. And the response was overwhelming! I did a ton of research to round out the list with great coffee house and cafe recommendations throughout Maryland! Check out the list here and you will never be far from your caffeine fix!

Rise Up is a Maryland institution with locations in Annapolis, Cambridge, Salisbury, St. Michaels, West Ocean City, and Edgewater. They offer specialty offerings for breakfast and lunch, tons of coffee, teas and chais, iced drinks, frozen drinks, baked goods, and more!
2. Ceremony Coffee Roasters
Locations in Baltimore, Annapolis, and Bethesda. The serve seasonal specialty items, breakfast, lunch, snacks, all kinds of espresso drinks, and more!
3. Baltimore Coffee and Tea
There are locations in this Maryland favorite in Annapolis, Frederick, Odenton, and Timonium. They have a huge menu of coffees, teas, and gourmet snacks.

4. Cafe Dear Leon
In addition to great locally sourced coffee, Cafe Dear Leon offers baked breads, pastries, breakfast, and lunch.
5. Zekes
Cafe locations in Soha Row and Pigtown. They also sell their coffee at numerous farmers markets in Maryland. There are also loads of places you can purchase their coffee beans wholesale!
6. Daily Grind
They call themselves a funky coffee shop in Fells Point. If you haven’t been to Fell’s Point, it’s so charming with cobblestone streets and a historic appeal. Daily Grind is on the waterfront and you can take the Baltimore Water Taxi there from the Inner Harbor!
7. Artifact Coffee
Artifact Coffee is housed in a reclaimed factory building and they sell locally sourced coffee and great food!
8. Common Ground
This Hampden institution has been around for 25 years. From their website: “We believe in creating a third space, a home away from home, where our customers can be themselves and part of a great local community.”
9. OneDo Coffee Roasters
A fantastic coffee place in Canton. They serve various blends of coffee and baked goods!
10. Red Canoe
This used to be a kid’s bookstore– now they just serve great coffee, breakfast and lunch. But they still have a very kid friendly menu.
11. Three Bean
Located on the Key Highway, Three Bean is a cozy counter service cafe that brews craft coffee drinks and baked goods!
12. Spoons
This Baltimore Cafe emphasizes feel good coffee and feel good food. They serve brunch all day and have a lunch menu.
13. Dooby’s
A Korean-inspired cafe located in Mount Vernon that is well known for their coffee. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
14. Dovecote Cafe
Dovecote Cafe is named after a medieval birdhouse or a place where a harmonious group comes to settle. They aim to be a community based food oasis.
15. Bird in Hand
A great cafe and bookstore in Charles Village. They have an expresso bar, tea bar, coffee bar, pastries, and more. They also hold special events.
16. Jabali Coffee
You can buy raw coffee beans and roast them right in the shop! Great local coffee shop with a local owner who gets rave reviews for his interesting stories!
17. Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse
Red Emma’s calls itself a ‘worker cooperative bookstore, cafe, and community events space.’ They are a bookstore and serve great food and coffee.. including loads of yummy vegan options!

18. Tell-Tale Coffee Company
This Westminster Coffeehouse has SO MANY fans. I mean, it was probably the MOST recommended coffeehouse in the reader poll. In addition to fantastic basic coffee options they have special and seasonal coffee creations like s’mores coffee, maple brown sugar coffee, and more!
19. Birdie’s Cafe-Westminster
Birdie’s is such a fantastic place to grab some coffee and good eats! They have tons of coffee, espresso, latte, or frozen coffee drink options. And the Birdie’s menu for breakfast and lunch is delicious!
20. The French Twist Cafe- Sykesville
Ummm, how would you like to indulge in a delicious crepe with your coffee creation? The French Twist is the perfect Saturday morning breakfast with the girls location! Their mission is to introduce its customers to gourmet coffee and authentic French cuisine in unique and comfortable surroundings. Sounds like a place I want to visit!
Annapolis and Anne Arundel County
21. The Red Bean
The Red Bean is a phenomenal ice cream and coffee shop located in the heart of Annapolis. They offer custom ice cream, bold espresso creations, whole leaf teas, and delicious specialty drinks.
22. Bitty & Beau’s Coffee
I LOVE the mission of this fantastic coffeehouse! From their website: “As advocates for the value, acceptance, and inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the Wrights have dedicated their lives to making the world a better place for their children and others living with disabilities.”
And their coffee is also fantastic! A great place all around!
23. Bean Rush Cafe
Locations in Annapolis, Crownsville, and the Baltimore-Washington Medical Center. They offer fresh brewed coffee, cold brew, lattes, teas and loose leaf teas, expressos, and a great menu of sandwiches, salads, paninis, and smoothies!
24. The Big Bean- Severna Park
This is a great cafe and coffeehouse that offers all the coffee creations you could imagine plus dedicated kid options, frozen drinks, and a full menu of smoothies!
25. Brown Mustache Coffee- Annapolis
Brown Mustache Coffee in Downtown Annapolis is a full service espresso and coffee bar that also offers locally sources pastries and other menu items. It’s located in Fox Books so you can browse and savor your coffee at the same time!
26. 49 West Coffeehouse- Annapolis
49 West brings art, music, and community together with great food and drink in an ambiance inspired by the traditional European coffeehouse.

Baltimore County Coffeehouses
27. OCA Mocha in Arbutus
This great coffeehouse was started with a question, “How can we make Arbutus into a college town?” A coffee shop? A community engagement center? Well, how about a mix of both?“
It was started with a partnership between the local community and UMBC and offers a full menu of beverages– including some signature drinks, as well as breakfast and lunch all day. They have a plant-based menu section as well!
28. The Filling Station- Sparks
This is a super cute coffeehouse in Sparks Glencoe that offers coffee, espresso, tea and chai, hot cocoa, shakes and smoothies, iced coffees, pastries and breakfast, and more. And– as a twist– they serve a full menu of authentic Mexican lunch options!
29. Joanna’s Cafe in Dundalk
Joanna’s offers tons of coffee, espresso, latte, hot cocoa, flavored lemonade, shakes and smoothies options. They serve breakfast (all day) and lunch with delicious menu options like BBQ Pulled Pork Mac N Cheese, grilled PB&J, and great sandwich options!
30. Joyride Java
Joyride Java is a mobile coffee bar that you can hire for an event.. or check out their calendar to see where they are headed! Their menu includes coffee and specialty drinks, pastries, and other sweet goodies!
31. Atwater’s Catonsville
Atwater’s actually has locations in Baltimore City and Canton too. But the location in Catonsville is the one readers raved about! Since 1999 Atwater’s has been making traditional food crafted by hand. We began in a small bakery making only one kind of bread and grew to our current Baltimore shops that specialize in soup, sandwiches, salad, cheese, coffee, Scottish pies, jam, and more!
Harford County

Voted Harford County’s favorite coffeehouse! They are the go-to spot for freshly roasted coffee, tea and foodie products, breakfast and lunch, unique gifts, and gift baskets. 33. Concord Point Coffee
This Havre de Grace coffeehouse offers fresh brewed coffee, lattes, espresso, mocha, iced coffees, blended drinks, and a wide variety of delicious baked goods!
34. Dough Run- Monkton
The Dough Run Bakery is home of the GRUFFIN (muffin with a sprinkle of granola).. sounds like a great place to check out! They actually specialize in all things granola- a great treat to have with your coffee!
35. Z Vault
Z Vault offers traditionally crafts espresso, all natural smoothies, juices, and tea. They focus on nutrition, quality, and service. Their food menu includes a wide variety of gourmet toasts, soups, and sandwiches.
36. Newberry Cafe and Bakery
The mission of the Newberry Cafe and Bakery is the bake the world a better place. Sounds like they are doing a great job of that since they are consistently voted the best donuts in Bel Air! They offer tons of gourmet donuts, cakes, and cupcakes. And for coffee (because that’s why we are here, right?)– Newberry offers coffee, iced coffee, cold brews, espressos, and specialty drinks!

37. Mad City Coffee
From their website: “Mad City Coffee is a coffee shop/coffee roaster minutes from the Columbia Mall and moments away from Howard Community College. 38. Roggenart- Three locations in Howard County!
This European Bakery and Cafe has three locations in Howard County in Columbia, Savage, and Ellicott City.
They offer fresh food made to order, bake breads and European pastries throughout the day and, of course, brew great coffee! Coffee selection include regular, iced, and a full menu of espressos and gourmet lattes. Their food menu is quite large with breakfast, lunch, and dinner options ranging from eggs to sandwiches, paninis, soups, and salads.
39. Old Mill Cafe- Ellicott City
This is a casual cafe in the heart of Historic Ellicott City. Their menu includes craft coffee, crepes, sandwiches, toasts, and homemade baked goods.
Charles County
40. Wee Bean Coffee Roasters
Wee Bean is a small batch coffee roastery located in La Plata, specializing in sustainably farmed, organic and fair trade coffees. Try their specialty coffees like the Snickerdoodle Macchiato!

43. St. Inie’s Coffee
St. Inie’s Coffee is a family-run coffee roastery in Southern Maryland dedicated to providing fresh-roasted, delicious, responsibly-sourced coffee. Known for their fantastic coffee , great breakfast and pastries, and super friendly, chill staff. Each drink is made to order by hand with really good quality beans, and you get to choose the coffee they use for your cup based on country of origin, a brief description of the variety, and the flavor notes.

46. Botanic Cafe
This Leonardtown cafe has a fantastic menu! Everything is farm to table and fresh to order. Their food menu has wraps, paninis, vegetarian/vegan options, salads, soups, smoothies, breakfast, and a bakery. The cafe also serves excellent coffee and hot tea!

47. Black Lion Coffee in Rockville
Black Lion Cafe sources its coffee from various regions of Ethiopia that produces some of the best tasting coffee beans in the world. They offer frapps, smoothies, drip coffee, tea (hot and cold), and you can purchase coffee beans.
48. The Family Room- Laytonsville
From their homepage: “The Family Room is all the best things in life. Coffee & Ice Cream, Maryland made & inspired products, lifestyle gifts & curated goods for your home.” To be clear, these curated goods are made from local vendors. How cool is that?
This is mostly a cute store that has great ice cream and coffee… but their fans rave loudly about the ice cream and coffee!
49. PJ’s Coffee of New Orleans
PJ’s Coffee is a nationwide chain with two locations in Maryland– Silver Spring and Bowie. PJ’s is famous for their iced coffees that are brewed daily using a special cold-drip process that protects the flavor and strength of the beans. Bags of whole bean coffee and single serve cups of PJ’s Coffee are available for sale.
They have a large coffee, tea, and hot cocoa menu, as well as pastries, sandwiches, and since it’s New Orleans— beignets.
50. Kaldi’s Social House Silver Spring
This fantastic coffeehouse and cafe serves a full breakfast and lunch menu– with dinner options as well. They get rave reviews from customers for their drip coffee and the food, especially brunch.
Prince George’s County
51. The New Deal Cafe- Greenbelt
The New Deal Cafe opened in 1995. It was named in honor of Works Project Administration, a part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Depression-era New Deal, which built the city of Greenbelt. The cafe is Greenbelt’s living room. They have live music nearly every night of the week and feature monthly exhibits by local artists.
This is a cooperative cafe that offers a full menu with bagels, soup, salad bar, smoothies, and more. The coffee/drink menu serves various coffees, espressos, lattes, mocha, hot tea, chai, and hot chocolate.
52. Vigilante Coffee Hyattsville and College Park
Vigilante Coffee has a following. A very devoted following. The owner started out in Hawai’i and started a roastery and cafe when he moved to the DC area. Now one of the founders is a master roaster who has won national roasting awards. You can purchase their specialty blends as well as order coffee and food. They offer cold brew, house drip, espresso, specialty coffee and tea drinks, bowls and bagels.
53. Ragamuffins Coffee House- Laurel
Ragamuffins loves and serves the community by cultivating a place to connect around handcrafted coffee. They serve Espresso, Americano, Macchiato, Cappuccino, Cortado, Latte, Mocha, Cafe Miel, Spanish Latte, Coffee, Cold Brew, Affogato, and specialty beans from around the world. This great coffeehouse has more than 80 varieties of coffee and handcrafting Organic Artisan Coffee is their specialty. They also offer hot tea, hot caramel spiced apple cider, hot chocolate, plus breakfast, lunch, baked goods, and much more.
55. Cafe Nola- Frederick
This great cafe offers salads, sandwiches, breakfast, as well as vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options.

61. Chesapeake Bay Coffee Co.
This pirate-themed (yes, really- pirates) coffeehouse in North East, MD is beloved by locals and tourists alike! They serve all kinds of coffee drinks, lattes, espresso, and hot cocoa. For food they also serve a full menu of gourmet donuts!

67. Figg’s Ordinary

68. A Little Lovely Coffeehouse- Queenstown

This family-owned destination coffeehouse in Stevensville, MD bills itself as a fantastic place to relax, gather with friends and family, and enjoy delicious food and coffee! Their local coffee beans are roasted by Open Seas Coffee Roasters from Stevensville, Maryland and the international beans are hand-selected by the coffeehouse from around the world. In addition to the fantastic coffee, The Coffee Trappe serves a full breakfast and lunch menu with truly delicious sounding items!
70. Waterman Joe Coffee
Waterman Joe Coffee in Stevensville is very popular with locals as a hidden gem. They serve lattes, coffee drinks, chai, and a great breakfast!
71. Dessert First Grasonville
This is a dockside coffee and dessert bar. Yes, dockside.. as in on the water. They serve Rise Up Coffee, ice cream (seasonally), baked goods from Peace of Cake, and delicious treats from Gluten Free Bake Girl.
Worcester County
72. On What Grounds?
This is a great little coffeehouse in Berlin, MD. They provide organic fair trade tea and coffee, work with local dairies and bakeries.. and they make their own chocolates! On What Grounds? serves all kinds of coffee, espressos, and frozen drinks. There is a full breakfast menu and, get this.. an entire crepe menu!
73. Coffee Beanery
A great place for your coffee fix in Ocean City! This is the same as the chain, but the OC location.
74. Sahara Coffee
This fantastic cafe in Ocean City is open seasonally (Spring through summer typically). They serve an amazingly huge breakfast menu and customers rave about their coffee as well– which is served in giant coffee cups!
Talbot County
75. Blue Crab Cafe- St. Michaels
The Blue Crab is a coffee shop serving breakfast and lunch. They have tables indoors and outdoors. They serve espresso, drip coffee, cappuccino, teas, hot chocolate, lattes, and more. Their menu includes tons of baked goods, pastries, breakfast, fantastic sandwiches, and more!
76. Weather Gage
A fantastic coffee option in Easton, MD. They serve a number of great coffee options like Americano, Espresso, Lattes, and more. Weather Gage also has an in-house bakery and they bake up croissants, cookies, and more on a daily basis.
77. Oxford Social Cafe
This coffeehouse is run by the owners of The Scottish Highland Creamery and they have expanded their love of great food and community to open this cafe next to Town Park! They have partnered with Rise Up coffee to serve the coffee, Blue Heron Catering for baked goods, and– of course, the creamery for ice cream!
Dorchester County
78. Black Water Bakery and Eats
Voted the best bakery on the Eastern Shore (wow, right?) They serve locally sourced coffee from Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company including specialty lattes, boozy drinks, teas, and more. They also have a huge bakery, breakfast, and lunch menu!
79. Overflow Cafe
Another great coffee option in Cambridge, MD is the Overflow Cafe. Patrons love their coffee, expert baristas, strong cold brew, cheap prices, delicious breakfast and lunch menu, and a great location off of Highway 50.
Washington County
80. Rooster Moon Coffee House- Hagerstown
Hagerstown’s best coffee house! They serve Raven’s Brew coffees, including nitro and cold brew. The cafe has a fresh, in house , bakery with croissants, cinnamon buns, and more. They serve breakfast all day and have a full smoothies menu!
81. Cannon Coffee
Considered one of Hagerstown’s best coffee houses! Cannon Coffee is a gluten-free kitchen that serves specialty coffees, espressos, lattes, nitros, hot tea, and hot chocolate. They also serve smoothies, bowls, vegan bagels, waffles, toasts, and more!
