If you spend any amount of time in Ocean City, Maryland, you’ll notice something pretty quickly.
People talk about the food almost as much as they talk about the beach.
And honestly… that feels about right.
Ocean City has a ridiculous number of places to eat. Pancake houses on every corner. Seafood restaurants overlooking the bay. Boardwalk snack stands that smell like caramel popcorn and hot fries.
No one could realistically eat at all of them.
We certainly haven’t.
But after many trips over the years, we’ve slowly developed a list of places we keep coming back to. Some are longtime Ocean City institutions. Others are just fun, relaxed restaurants where kids can be kids and nobody cares if you show up in flip-flops and sandy hair.
And of course there are the classic boardwalk snacks that feel almost mandatory.

Breakfast is serious business in Ocean City.
Partly because beach days start early.
But mostly because Ocean City pancake houses are legendary.
There are a lot of good ones. These are the ones we keep returning to.
Bayside Skillet
This is my all-time favorite place to eat in Ocean City.
No exaggeration.
In fact, I probably haven’t tried as many restaurants in Ocean City as I should have… simply because I can’t bear the idea of visiting without eating here.
And here’s the funny part.
I order the exact same thing every single time.
Crepes Kathryn.
Oh my goodness.
If you only order one thing during your Ocean City trip, make it this. The crepes are delicate and light, filled with fruit and cream, and somehow manage to feel indulgent without being heavy.
It’s one of those dishes where you take the first bite and immediately think:
Yep. That was the right decision.
The restaurant itself is so charming, with an airy dining room and strawberry decor everywhere that is just so whimsical. It’s a little pricier than the typical pancake houses around town, but for me it’s a must-visit every single trip.
Layton’s Family Restaurant
Layton’s feels like the classic Ocean City breakfast diner.
Nothing fancy.
Just really good, hearty breakfast food.
They’ve been serving families since the 1960s, and the menu is exactly what you want before a long day at the beach:

home fries

French toast
It’s casual, fast, and reliable. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want.

Happy Jack Pancake House
If your family loves pancakes, Happy Jack Pancake House is hard to beat.
The pancakes here are huge. Fluffy. And there are tons of flavors to choose from.
It’s the kind of breakfast where everyone orders way too much food and nobody regrets it.
One thing is almost guaranteed though:

The Dough Roller
The Dough Roller is one of those restaurant names you’ll see all over Ocean City.
There are multiple locations, including some right along the boardwalk.
Most people think of them for pizza later in the day, but breakfast here is surprisingly good. Pancakes, eggs, and big breakfast platters that fuel you up for the beach.
And if you’re staying near the boardwalk, it’s also one of the most convenient breakfast stops around.

Best Ocean City Restaurants for Lunch and Dinner
Ocean City has an overwhelming number of restaurants.
Seafood spots. Sports bars. Waterfront restaurants. Family restaurants with playgrounds.
Actually, that last category is worth mentioning for a second.
I’ve written a whole guide about Ocean City restaurants with play areas, because when you’re traveling with kids those places can be absolute lifesavers.
But the good news is that many of those restaurants also happen to serve really good food.
Here are a few we’ve enjoyed.
Ropewalk Ocean City
Ropewalk sits right on the bay and has one of the prettiest sunset views in Ocean City.
It’s also extremely family friendly thanks to the big outdoor play area.
While visiting, I ordered a salmon salad expecting something pretty basic.
It was fantastic.
Fresh salmon, crisp greens, bright flavors — the kind of meal that somehow tastes even better after a long day outside.
Fish Tales
Fish Tales has a fun beach-bar vibe and a sandy play area for kids.
But the thing I remember most from our visit?
The salsa.
It was honestly one of the best salsas I’ve had at a restaurant in a long time.
Fresh, flavorful, and addictive enough that we kept asking for more chips.
Dead Freddies Island Grill
Dead Freddies might be the most family-oriented restaurant in Ocean City.
There’s a large playground right beside the outdoor seating area, which makes dinner with kids dramatically easier.
One of the standout dishes here is the Chicken Jennifer, which is wonderfully rich and decadent.
Definitely a memorable meal.
You can ask to eat right next to the playground.. which is nice. Your table will be in the sand and shaded.
De Lazy Lizard
De Lazy Lizard is one of the best places in Ocean City to watch the sunset.
The restaurant sits right on the bay, and the atmosphere is relaxed and breezy in that perfect beach-town way.
When I visited I was on an eating plan, so I ordered a simple garden salad with salmon.
Honestly?
It was delicious.
Fresh, light, and full of flavor — exactly what I was hoping for after a long day in the sun.
Alley Oops
Alley Oops is one of the most unique restaurants in Ocean City.
Part restaurant. Part entertainment center.
Inside there are bowling lanes, arcade games, and plenty of things to keep kids and teenagers entertained.
The food is actually excellent too.
I ordered the Chicken Chesapeake, and it was wonderfully decadent.

Bad Monkey
Bad Monkey feels a little more playful than your average Ocean City restaurant.
Even the name gives that away.
It has a fun, slightly quirky vibe, but the food is not an afterthought at all. In fact, this is one of those places where you sit down expecting a casual meal and then end up talking about the food afterward.
The burger we had was piled high with melty cheddar, bacon, and barbecue sauce, and it definitely did not mess around. Messy in the best way. Rich, smoky, satisfying, and very much the kind of thing you want when you are fully in beach-vacation mode and not pretending to be overly disciplined.
And the fries?
Also excellent.
But the surprise favorite might have been the little donut-hole-style bites on the side. Warm, sugary, soft inside, and honestly the kind of thing that disappears from the basket faster than you expect. They looked simple, but they absolutely were not boring.
Bad Monkey also has the kind of menu that works well for families because it feels fun and approachable without being bland. It’s casual, energetic, and a nice change of pace if you want something that feels a little trendier than the old-school pancake house or seafood shack vibe.
Longboard Café
Longboard Café is a great pick when you want something that feels a little more polished but still relaxed enough for a beach trip.
It doesn’t have the same boardwalk-snack energy as some Ocean City favorites, and that’s actually part of the appeal.
This is the sort of place you pick when everybody wants a good dinner and you’re in the mood for food that feels a little fresher and a little more thoughtful. The menu leans coastal and creative, with seafood, sandwiches, tacos, bowls, and salads that feel a step up from the more standard beach-town options.
I’d describe the overall vibe as casually upscale, but not stuffy. You can still come as a vacationing family. You just feel like you made a slightly more strategic dinner choice.
If your Ocean City trip usually includes a lot of fries, pizza, ice cream, and boardwalk treats — which, to be clear, is as it should be — Longboard Café is a nice place to work into the mix for a meal that feels a bit more balanced and elevated.
Ocean City Snacks and Sweet Treats on and off the boardwalk
Even if you eat at great restaurants during your Ocean City trip, you still have to make room for the boardwalk snacks.
Honestly, some people come to Ocean City mostly for the beach.
Others come for the food.
And the boardwalk treats are a big part of that.
You’ll smell caramel popcorn, fried potatoes, and warm donuts long before you see the shops themselves. It’s basically impossible to walk the boardwalk without stopping for something.
Most evenings, our family ends up doing what a lot of Ocean City families do: wandering the boardwalk slowly, picking up snacks as we go.
Fries first.
Dessert later.
And probably candy on the way back to the car.

Thrasher’s French Fries
There are fries.
And then there are Thrasher’s Fries.
These have been served on the Ocean City boardwalk since 1929, and somehow the recipe has stayed beautifully simple the entire time.
Fresh-cut potatoes.
Hot oil.
Salt.
And malt vinegar.
That’s it.
No ketchup allowed here, which surprises a lot of first-time visitors. But once you try them with vinegar, it makes sense.
One of my favorite Ocean City memories is walking down the boardwalk at sunset with a hot cup of Thrasher’s fries. The paper cup is almost too hot to hold, everyone grabs a fry or two, and the vinegar smell mixes with the salty ocean air.
It’s messy.
And perfect.
Kohr Brothers Frozen Custard
Another Ocean City classic is Kohr Brothers frozen custard.
Their most famous flavor combination is the orange and vanilla swirl, which many people associate with childhood beach vacations.

Cold, creamy, and perfect after walking the boardwalk on a hot summer night.
You’ll see Kohr Brothers stands all along the boardwalk, and they’re almost always busy.
That’s usually a good sign.
Dumser’s Dairyland
Dumser’s Dairyland is basically the ice cream institution of Ocean City.
If you ask longtime visitors where to get ice cream, this name comes up again and again.
And honestly, we completely understand why.
Over the years we’ve had cones, sundaes, milkshakes… and we have never had a bad scoop here. Not once.
It’s just consistently good old-fashioned ice cream.
Dodo Cookie Dough and Ice Cream
If you’re traveling with kids or teenagers, Dodo Cookie Dough and Ice Cream will probably be a big hit.
Instead of just ice cream, they serve edible cookie dough in a huge variety of flavors.
Chocolate chip, peanut butter, brownie batter… the combinations are endless.
It’s one of those dessert stops where everyone stands there for a few minutes trying to decide what to order.

Fisher’s Popcorn
You will smell Fisher’s Popcorn before you see it.
That warm caramel scent floats down the boardwalk and practically pulls people into the shop.
Fisher’s has been making caramel popcorn in Ocean City for generations, cooking it in big copper kettles right in the storefront.
It’s sweet, crunchy, and dangerously easy to keep eating.
A lot of families buy the big tubs so they can bring some home.
Which sounds like a great idea until you realize how fast it disappears.
Dolle’s Salt Water Taffy
Another Ocean City classic is Dolle’s salt water taffy.
The company has been making candy here since the late 1800s, and the shops still feel wonderfully old-school.
Colorful boxes of taffy stacked everywhere.
The candy being pulled and wrapped in the windows.
Kids staring through the glass trying to decide which flavor to pick.
And yes — we always bring some home.
It’s one of those little traditions that makes a beach trip feel complete.
Candy Kitchen
Speaking of bringing candy home…
Candy Kitchen has pretty much every sugary treat imaginable.
Chocolate.
Fudge.
Salt water taffy.
Gummies.
Caramel apples.
If it’s sweet, they probably have it.
One of our little traditions is letting the kids wander the store with a bag and pick out a few things to take home. It takes forever because there are so many choices, but somehow that’s part of the fun.
Everything tastes amazing.
And yes… it will absolutely rot your teeth.
But beach vacations are not the time to worry about that.
Fractured Prune Donuts
Fractured Prune donuts are basically little edible works of art.
You start with a hot, freshly fried donut.
Then you choose your glaze.
Then your toppings.
Chocolate glaze. Caramel drizzle. Cookie crumbs. Powdered sugar. Sprinkles.
The combinations are endless.
My personal favorite is the Peppermint Patty donut.
Warm donut. Chocolate glaze. Crushed peppermint.
It’s incredible.

Vanderwende’s Ice Cream (Worth the Stop on the Way)
If you’re driving to Ocean City through Delaware, do yourself a favor and stop at Vanderwende’s Farm Creamery.
Honestly, it might be the best reason to take that route.
The ice cream is excellent.
But the setting is what really makes it memorable.
It’s an actual working dairy farm, so while you’re eating your ice cream you can look out and see cows grazing in the fields. Kids love it.
And somehow ice cream just tastes better when there are cows involved.
Ocean City has no shortage of places to eat, and honestly that’s part of the fun of visiting. Some meals will be simple boardwalk classics like Thrasher’s fries or caramel popcorn.
Others might be a relaxed breakfast overlooking the bay or dinner at a family-friendly restaurant where the kids can play while you wait for your food. The restaurants and treats on this list are the ones our family keeps coming back to — the spots that have become part of our Ocean City traditions.
