If you are exploring the western side of Maryland and see signs for the Maryland Ice Cream Trail, there is a very good chance one stop will catch your attention: Misty Meadows Farm Creamery.
And honestly? It deserves the attention.
This isn’t just an ice cream window on the side of the road. Misty Meadows is a full working dairy farm outside Smithsburg, Maryland, and visiting feels more like stopping by someone’s farm than visiting a typical dessert shop.
You grab your cone… wander around a little… the kids discover the animals… someone notices the play area… and suddenly you’ve been there 45 minutes.
That seems to be the rhythm here.

First Impressions of the Farm
The first thing you notice when you pull into Misty Meadows is the setting.
It’s wide open farmland with South Mountain rising up in the distance. Fields stretch out behind the creamery building, and the whole place has that quiet rural feeling that Western Maryland does so well.
Nothing here feels rushed.
There’s a long porch attached to the creamery building with tables and chairs scattered around. People sit there with cones, talking and watching kids run around the property.
It’s simple. But it works.

The Ice Cream (Which Is Really the Whole Point)
Of course, the reason people come here is the ice cream.
And it’s very good.
Because Misty Meadows is a working dairy farm, the milk used in the ice cream comes from cows raised right on the farm. That fresh milk makes the ice cream noticeably rich and creamy.
The flavor list changes often, but you’ll usually find a mix of:
• classic flavors
• chocolate and cookie varieties
• fruit-based options
• seasonal creations
During our visit we tried a berry flavor that had little bursts of fruit mixed throughout the scoop. It was creamy, slightly tart, and honestly the perfect thing on a warm afternoon.
And there’s something about eating ice cream on a farm porch that makes it taste even better.
Farm Animals (Always a Hit With Kids)
Not surprisingly, the animals are a huge draw for families.
You don’t have to wander far before spotting them.
During our visit we saw miniature horses grazing in their enclosure and a few pigs lounging in the shade like they had absolutely no intention of doing anything productive that day.
Kids love it.
And even adults tend to stop and watch for a bit. Farm animals have a way of slowing people down.
It adds to the feeling that this is a real farm first — and an ice cream destination second.

The Sunflowers and Flower Gardens
If you visit during late summer or early fall, Misty Meadows often has sunflower fields growing on the property.
Rows of sunflowers stretch across the farm, and they add a surprising pop of color against the mountain backdrop.

There are also flower beds scattered around the creamery building with bright zinnias and other blooms.
It makes the entire place feel cheerful and welcoming.
Misty Meadows plants butterfly friendly blooms too so if you time it right you might get a fluttery butterfly treat!
And yes… it’s very easy to end up taking photos while you wander around.
We have been in August and had great sunflower photos, and in September when the sunflowers were droopy. But when the sunflowers were at the end of their life, there were other flowers that were just as gorgeous!
The Play Area (Which Buys Parents Extra Ice Cream Time)
One of the smartest things Misty Meadows has done is add a small play area for kids.
Nothing fancy.
But kids don’t need fancy.
The play area includes:
• large tractor tires to climb on
• a wooden farm-style play structure
• open space to run around
You’ll see kids scrambling up the giant tires while parents sit nearby finishing their ice cream.
Which, if we’re being honest, is exactly how this setup should work.
Why This Stop Feels Different
There are plenty of ice cream places in Maryland.
But Misty Meadows feels different because it hasn’t tried to turn itself into a big attraction.
It’s still a farm.
You can feel that in the layout, the open fields, the animals wandering around nearby, and the simple seating areas.
People come for the ice cream — but they stay because the place feels relaxed.
And in a world of crowded attractions and busy schedules, that’s pretty refreshing.

The ice cream is excellent.
But the combination of animals, flowers, mountain views, and space for kids to play is what really makes the place memorable.
