Gunpowder Falls State Park is huge.

Not “big park” huge. I mean multiple entrances, multiple counties, totally different experiences depending on where you park.

If you type “Gunpowder Falls State Park” into Google Maps without knowing where you’re headed, you’re probably going to end up somewhere random.

This guide focuses specifically on the Central Area — but not just one entrance. We’re talking about the four spots that area really family friendly.. and some of them are not well known:

  • Hammerman Area (the beach)
  • Bel Air Road / Kingsville (Pot Rocks area)
  • 13097 Harford Road river access
  • Hillbilly Beach in Parkton

Each one feels completely different. Each one works better for different ages, energy levels, and expectations.

Let’s walk through them clearly so you know exactly where to go.

1. Hammerman Area (The Beach)

Address

7200 Graces Quarters Rd, Middle River, MD 21220

Hours

Open sunrise to sunset
Swimming is seasonal (typically Memorial Day through Labor Day; check DNR for lifeguard schedule)

Admission

There is a per-person day-use fee during the summer season. Maryland residents pay a lower rate than out-of-state visitors. Children under a certain age are typically free. Always check the Maryland DNR website for current pricing.

Hammerman is the “I didn’t realize Maryland had a beach like this” part of Gunpowder.

It sits where the Gunpowder River widens toward the Chesapeake Bay. The sand is soft. The shoreline is wide. There’s a long fishing pier stretching into the water and plenty of space to spread out.

It’s legitimately beautiful.

It’s also legitimately crowded on summer weekends.

If you plan to visit:

  • Go early.
  • Weekdays are significantly better.
  • Bring shade.

The swimming area is roped off when lifeguards are on duty. The water is generally calm near shore and gradually deepens, making it approachable for families with younger kids. Restrooms are available here. There are picnic tables and grills. The layout feels organized and structured.

Compared to the other Central Area spots, Hammerman feels the most “official.” You’re parking, unloading beach gear, and setting up for the day.

If you want:

  • A true beach experience
  • Bathrooms
  • Lifeguards
  • Space for a large group
  • Easier access for grandparents

Hammerman is your best bet.

If you’re looking for quiet woods and river wandering, keep reading.

2. Bel Air Road / Kingsville Entrance (Pot Rocks Area)

10092 Belair Rd, Kingsville, MD
(Search “Gunpowder Falls Bel Air Road Entrance” if needed.)

Hours

Admission

Free day-use access

This is the entrance most people mean when they say, “Have you been to Pot Rocks?”

There are two large adjoining parking lots. After being closed for bridge work for quite some time, this entrance reopened a few years ago and once again connects visitors to some of the most family-friendly river access in the park.

From the parking lot, multiple trailheads lead to the Blue Trail, which runs parallel to the river.

The Blue Trail is:

  • Mostly flat
  • Packed dirt
  • Manageable for little hikers
  • Not stroller friendly, but doable for short distances

From there, you can choose your direction.

One way takes you under Bel Air Road through a large tunnel. The other leads you to Pot Rocks — large, smooth river rocks that are perfect for climbing, sitting, splashing, and letting kids throw rocks into the water for far longer than you expected.

This section of the river feels adventurous without being overwhelming. The current moves steadily but is usually not aggressive in the wading areas. As always, close supervision is important.

In warmer months, families spread out along the banks with folding chairs and snacks. It’s casual and relaxed without feeling chaotic.

If you branch onto the Yellow Trail, you’ll head uphill into a loop that takes you to higher ground and a small waterfall area. Across the river is the White Trail (Big Gunpowder Trail), which can take experienced hikers much farther — even toward Jerusalem Mill if you’re up for a longer trek.

For most families, though, Blue Trail plus Pot Rocks is plenty.

And here’s something that makes this entrance especially convenient: the Gunpowder Lodge sits across the street and has a playground. Hike, river time, lunch, playground. It’s a solid combo.

3. 13097 Harford Road River Access

Address

13097 Harford Rd, Kingsville, MD 21087

Important detail: There are two nearby entrances — one in Baltimore County and one just over the Harford County line. You want the Harford County entrance.

If driving north toward Harford County, it will be on your right. If driving south toward Baltimore County, it will be on your left.

Hours

Sunrise to Sunset

Admission

Free

Parking

Small lot that fills quickly in summer.

Bathrooms

None.

This is one of the simplest and most underrated river access points in the Central Area.

You park.
You walk a very short distance.
You’re at the water.

There’s a small sandy area right near the start of the trail, making it perfect for:

  • Rock throwing
  • Wading
  • Bringing a folding chair
  • Letting kids explore without committing to a long hike

You don’t need to trek miles to find a beach. It’s right there.

The river is clear and shallow near shore in many spots. It’s easy to spend an hour here without going anywhere else.

Even in cooler months, this entrance is worth visiting. The trails feel quiet. The river is scenic. The rocks are beautiful.

Just remember:

  • No bathrooms.
  • Not stroller friendly.
  • Limited parking.

Bring what you need and plan accordingly.

4. Hillbilly Beach (Parkton)

Two small roadside parking areas on either side of York Road. They fill fast.

Admission

Hillbilly Beach sounds like a joke until you get there and realize why it’s popular.

There isn’t a wide sandy shoreline like Hammerman. Instead, you’ll find easy access into the river, shallow edges for wading, and deeper sections further out.

Across the river, older kids often climb onto large rocks and jump into deeper water. That alone tells you something important: this section drops off quickly in places.

Supervision matters here.

The water is very cold due to the nearby dam. Even in summer, it can be a shock when you first step in.

There’s a wide grassy field nearby that works well for picnics. A hiking trail follows the river, and a smaller side stream runs nearby that’s noticeably warmer than the main river.

This location feels more rustic than the others. It’s very much a “pack it in, pack it out” experience. No lifeguards. No bathrooms. Limited parking.

Arrive before 11am if possible on hot days. By afternoon, it gets busy.

Choosing the Right Central Area Spot

Here’s the quick comparison:

If you want a traditional beach day with bathrooms and lifeguards, go to Hammerman.

Are kid-friendly river rocks and flat trails, head to Pot Rocks at the Bel Air Road entrance.

For quick, easy river access without much hiking, choose 13097 Harford Road.

And if you want a rustic swimming hole vibe with deeper water and colder currents, try Hillbilly Beach.

Final Thoughts on Gunpowder Falls Central Area

The Central Area of Gunpowder Falls State Park isn’t one single experience.

It’s a beach on the Chesapeake Bay. But it’s also shady forest trails, smooth river rocks, and secret watering holes.

You could visit four times and feel like you went to four different parks.

Start with the entrance that fits your family best. Bring water shoes. Pack snacks. Go early on summer weekends. Expect small parking lots outside of Hammerman.

And don’t stress about seeing everything in one day.

There’s a reason Gunpowder Falls is a Maryland classic.
