5 Ways to Get Motivated When You Really Don’t Want to Do Something

Motivation can be tough to create out of nowhere. These 5 ways to get motivated should help!

We have all been there before. We want so desperately to do something or accomplish something. Yet, for some reason, we can’t seem to move our butt off the couch and get it done! I have been there myself many times. It might have been after a long day of cleaning, giving up on the rest of the list, or just willing myself to turn off the TV and get some work done! If you feel unmotivated, here are five ways to get motivated when you don’t want to do something.

Know your why

Take a moment to ask yourself why you need to do whatever you need to do? Do you need to clean your home because you have company over? Or are you just doing it for yourself? Knowing and understanding why you want to do something can make it easier to get motivated to do that thing. While this can be a great way to motivate yourself to get something done, it can also give you some insight into the things that don’t need to get done.

Break it down into more manageable chunks

Cleaning the whole house is a huge undertaking! Instead of telling yourself that you’re going to clean the entire house, try instead breaking down that goal into a more manageable chunk. For example, start by just focusing on the kitchen. Or even spread out cleaning your home over a few days if you can with one room at a time.

Give yourself a reward or incentive

If you’re the kind of person, who can be motivated by an incentive, reward yourself! Make doing whatever task more exciting by rewarding yourself for when you finish! You can also make it something you do during that task, such as listening to an audiobook or your favorite music if you need motivation while you do that task. Sometimes the promise of a good book can be just what you need to clean up the kitchen.

Make it fun

This one can be hard sometimes, but find a way to make whatever task you have to do fun! Turn it into a game and see how fast you can get something done, or add some fun music you can dance to while you do it. Instead of just grumbling through the task, find a way to make it more fun!

Take a break

If you have been cleaning or working all day, try taking a break. Sometimes the very thing you need to keep going is a quick break from what you’re doing. You can take a quick break to do something else or just rest for a moment. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you set a time limit for your break, so you don’t forget to come back to it!

We all have off days or days when we aren’t able to get things done. However, if you’re finding yourself unmotivated or in a funk, hopefully, these tips can help you get motivated so you can tackle whatever project is ahead of you.
