How to Have the Perfect Beach Day at Greenbrier State Park

Greenbrier State Park in Boonsboro, Maryland, has long been one of our go-to summer spots. It’s just the right mix of fun, family-friendly, and laid-back. Think soft sand, shallow water perfect for little swimmers, and shady picnic areas where you can actually relax.
We’ve been visiting this lake beach for years, and it still holds some of my favorite summer memories—like the time my daughter and I twirled around in the water, laughing so hard we could barely stay upright. Moments like that? Priceless.
Whether you’re heading there for the first time or it’s already one of your summer traditions, here’s what you need to know for 2025—including the new weekend reservation system, helpful tips, and what’s new at the park.

That One Summer Day I’ll Never Forget
It was the tail end of a local vacation, and I wanted one last special day with my then 3-year-old daughter. It was blazing hot, so we headed to Greenbrier to cool off. At first, I thought I might sneak in a little “mom time” while she played, but of course, she begged me to come in with her.
Before long, we were wading out into the lake, hand in hand, the sand squishing between our toes. We crossed under the rope into the deeper water, well, “deeper” by toddler standards. She wrapped her arms around my neck as we floated toward the buoy, smacked it a few times for good luck, and then… we twirled.
I had her put her feet on my knees while I held her hands, and I spun us around in the water. At first she was a little unsure, but once she leaned into it? Pure joy. Head thrown back, eyes sparkling, cackling with delight. Honestly, my heart almost burst. That kind of moment sticks with you.

📅 New for 2025: Weekend and Holiday Reservations Are Now Required
If you’ve ever pulled up to Greenbrier on a sunny Saturday just to be turned away at the gate, you’ll appreciate this change. The park now uses a reservation system for weekend and holiday visits during the summer. It’s a game-changer.
Here’s what to know:
- Reservations are required on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
- You can reserve your day-use pass online up to 30 days in advance:
👉 Make Your Reservation Here - Weekday visits are still first-come, first-served.
- Walk-ins without a reservation on weekends? Not guaranteed. Don’t risk it.
This new system makes your day smoother—and keeps the beach from getting too overcrowded.

🚗 Arrive Early (Even If You Reserved a Spot)
Greenbrier opens at 8 AM, and trust me- if it’s a sunny weekend, people will be lined up early. Even with a reservation, it’s worth getting there close to opening if you want a good parking spot or your pick of shady areas.
Weekdays are a whole different story. We’ve gone midweek and had most of the beach to ourselves, which is especially awesome when you’ve got little kids.

🏖️ A Beach Made for Families
The beach here runs along a peaceful man-made lake, and it’s seriously one of the best setups for younger kids in the area.
There are three main beach areas:
- Middle Beach – This is where we always set up. It’s right near the restrooms, snack bar, and lifeguards. Super convenient for families.
- Right Beach – Home to the boat rentals.
- Left Beach – Has a volleyball court and usually sees more large groups or campers.
We’ve always loved how clearly the swimming areas are roped off. The shallow section is perfect for toddlers or cautious swimmers, and when your kiddo is ready to venture out a bit, the deeper zone is still manageable—and always watched by lifeguards.
And yep, the lake has a sandy bottom (so much better than muddy!) and only a little seaweed. Nothing gross or slimy.

⛱️ Where to Park and Set Up
After you pass the ranger station, follow the signs to the beach parking lot on the left. The first lot you hit is closest to the beach trail, and that’s exactly where you want to be if you’re hauling beach gear, a cooler, or children who melt like popsicles when they walk too far.
The trail from the parking lot drops you right near the restrooms, changing areas, and the main beach entrance. Easy peasy.

🧺 Picnic Options: Shade, Space, and Grill Access
You’ve got a few choices when it comes to eating:
- Picnic right on the sand (what we usually do)
- Set up on the grassy lawn by the beach
- Or claim a shaded picnic table back in the woodsier area, which also has grills
That shaded picnic grove is clutch on hot days or if you’re spending the full day at the park. It’s also perfect for birthday parties or family reunions.

🚣♀️ When the Kids Need a Break From Swimming
If your crew gets waterlogged or wants a little adventure, there’s plenty to do:

- Fishing – The lake is stocked (fishing license required for ages 16+).
- Nature Center – Kid-friendly and often geared toward preschoolers.
- Playground – Simple but a great distraction for wiggly legs.
- Hiking Trails – Most are short and doable, even for younger kids.
