Visit the Rocky Point Creamery for Ice Cream, Stay for Sunflowers

As we pulled into the dusty parking lot, both of our eyes got really big. My daughter immediately wanted to check out the super cool playground that was modeled after a gigantic John Deere tractor. However, a smile crept across my face when I saw the adjacent sunflower field that promised we would bring home a little happiness. Of course, a visit to the Rocky Point Creamery is not about play structures and happy flowers. Nope, the main event is the ice cream. But these sweet extras make this creamery a must do place to go with kids during the summer in Maryland.

The Rocky Point Creamery in Tuscarora, MD is a family run creamery and farm that whips up homemade ice cream fresh every day. Their ice cream is super delicious and they serve both soft serve and hard packed ice cream flavors, as well as special ice cream treats such as sundaes and banana splits. It was really difficult to pick the perfect flavor. Sweet Pea opted for the standard chocolate cone, and I splurged on a double cone– Mint Chocolate Chip and Raspberry Sorbet. It was perfectly refreshing for a hot hot summer day.

You don’t have to take my word for it though. The Rocky Point Creamery is one of nine farms picked as part of the 2016 Maryland Ice Cream Trail. So, you know their ice cream is the best!

We decided to eat first and play later (good choice) and took our ice cream outside to the porch-covered cow-themed tables and benches. There was a gentle cross breeze that cut down on the heat and we gobbled our ice cream fast so we could explore the rest of the fun!

The playground was a huge hit with Sweet Pea. She probably enjoyed sitting in the cab of the John Deere the most. The play structure includes three slides of various heights, as well as other fun climbing opportunities.

After she had her full of the playground, we hopped back into the main barn to borrow a pair of shears, and then we headed out to the sunflower fields. In addition to snapping happy photos and snagging some beautiful sunflowers to bring home, our purchase will help children in need. The Rocky Point Creamery plants the sunflower fields every year in order to raise funds for the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. How completely awesome is that? Each stem you trim costs $1 and all the proceeds (plus more) are donated to the hospital.

Know Before You Go:

  • In the spring and summer months, the creamery is open Tuesday-Sunday from 1130AM to 830PM. Note: It is closed on Monday.
  • The sunflower fields reach peak bloom in mid-to-late July and will be available until the flowers die or are picked. We visited the third week of July and about 1/2 the flowers were still in bloom/ready to be picked.
