Of all the places we visited during our Utah Mighty 5 road trip, Kanab may have been the biggest food surprise.

I expected incredible scenery and red rocks.

And of course I wanted easy access to Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.

What I didn’t expect was some of the best meals of the entire trip.

In fact, if I had to rank the food towns we visited during our Utah road trip, Kanab would probably finish near the top of the list.

That’s saying something.

For a relatively small town tucked away in southern Utah, Kanab has a surprisingly impressive food scene. Between locally owned cafes, creative restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, and a few quirky roadside favorites, there are far more good options than you might expect.

Whether you’re staying in Kanab for a few nights, passing through on a Utah Mighty 5 itinerary, or using it as a base for exploring Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, or Coral Pink Sand Dunes, you’ll find plenty of great places to eat.

Why Kanab Has Such Good Food

One thing that surprised me during our trip was how many travelers pass through Kanab.

The town sits in a perfect location for exploring some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Southwest.

Within a short drive you can reach:

Because Kanab serves as a gateway town for so many destinations, it attracts visitors from all over the world. That steady stream of travelers has helped create a restaurant scene that feels much more diverse than you’d expect in a town this size.

And honestly, after several days of eating road-trip food, Kanab felt like hitting the culinary jackpot.

Rocking V Café

My Favorite Dinner in Kanab

If I could only recommend one restaurant in Kanab, it would probably be Rocking V Café.

This was one of those meals you remember long after the trip ends.

The restaurant itself immediately stood out. The atmosphere is colorful, artsy, and a little whimsical. Everywhere you look there’s something interesting to catch your eye.

It feels distinctly local and full of personality.

We started with the hummus appetizer.

It absolutely did not disappoint.

The hummus was smooth, creamy, and packed with flavor. The warm pita bread disappeared almost immediately, and I’m pretty sure everyone at the table wished there had been more.

For dinner, I ordered the pecan chicken.

Wow.

The chicken was incredibly tender with a crispy pecan crust on the outside. The sauce pulled everything together perfectly and added just enough sweetness without overwhelming the dish.

It’s one of those meals where you keep saying, “Okay, just one more bite.”

Meanwhile, my husband ordered a bacon cheeseburger and a side salad.

The side salad was apparently his attempt at making healthy vacation choices.

That evening we ended up making s’mores during our Coral Pink Sand Dunes UTV tour, so I think the salad may have been cancelled out.

Still, nice effort.

The food was excellent, but what really made Rocking V Café memorable was the overall experience. Great service, fun atmosphere, and food that felt thoughtfully prepared.

One of our favorite experiences near Kanab was this incredible Peekaboo Slot Canyon tour, which combines stunning sandstone formations, fun off-road driving, and some of the most photogenic scenery in southern Utah.

Lunch, Soup, Sandwiches, and That Famous Pizookie

Sometimes the best restaurant recommendations come from locals.

Our tour guides suggested Brown Box Café, so naturally we had to check it out.

At first glance, it looks like a casual lunch spot.

Then the food arrives.

I ordered the Caprese grilled cheese with a cup of tomato bisque soup.

This wasn’t your average grilled cheese sandwich.

The cheese was perfectly melted and gloriously gooey. Fresh tomato, pesto, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze elevated the entire sandwich. Every bite was packed with flavor.

The tomato bisque was rich and comforting without being overly heavy.

It was exactly the kind of lunch I wanted after a morning spent exploring southern Utah.

But let’s be honest.

The real star here is the pizookie.

Months later, it’s still the dessert we talk about.

If you’ve never had one, imagine a giant warm chocolate chip cookie fresh from the oven. The edges are slightly crisp, the center stays wonderfully gooey, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream slowly melts over the top.

It’s the perfect combination of warm and cold.

Sweet and rich.

Soft and crunchy.

And it disappears ridiculously fast.

Even if you’re full, order the pizookie.

Thunderbird Restaurant

The Sweet Potato Fries That Shouldn’t Work (But Totally Do)

Thunderbird Restaurant sits just outside Kanab in nearby Mount Carmel and has become something of a local institution.

And yes, I’m about to tell you to order sweet potato fries with caramel sauce.

I know.

I was skeptical too.

Actually, I was more than skeptical.

The concept sounded completely ridiculous.

Then I tried one.

And then I kept eating them.

The sweet potato fries are crispy, salty, slightly sweet, and somehow the caramel sauce makes perfect sense.

It’s one of those combinations that sounds strange until you taste it.

Then suddenly you’re wondering why everyone doesn’t serve sweet potato fries this way.

For lunch, I ordered a BLT.

Simple.

Fresh.

Delicious.

The sandwich wasn’t overly heavy, which turned out to be a very good thing considering how many sweet potato fries I consumed.

Thunderbird is also famous for its pie.

In fact, the restaurant proudly advertises its famous “Ho-Made Pies” on a roadside sign.

Yes.

That’s really what it says.

The sign made us laugh before we ever walked through the door.

It’s the kind of playful, slightly irreverent humor that feels perfect for a road trip vacation.

And of course we had to stop.

Most visitors know Canyons Boutique Hotel as one of the nicest places to stay in Kanab.

What many travelers don’t realize is that the hotel is also connected with one of the town’s most highly regarded dining experiences: Sego Restaurant.

We stayed at Canyons Boutique Hotel during our visit and were genuinely impressed by the food. Breakfast felt more like something you’d find at a boutique inn than a typical hotel.

Fresh ingredients, thoughtful preparation, and excellent service made it one of our favorite hotel breakfasts of the entire Utah trip.

Of all the gateway towns we visited during our Utah Mighty 5 road trip, Kanab delivered some of the most memorable meals.

Between the pecan chicken at Rocking V Café, the gooey pizookie at Brown Box Café, and those surprisingly addictive sweet potato fries at Thunderbird Restaurant, we left with a lot of food memories alongside the hiking and sightseeing memories.

And honestly?

That’s not something I expected before we arrived.

Kanab may be a small town, but when it comes to restaurants, it punches far above its weight.
