Kid Friendly Black Owned Businesses In Maryland
These Black Owned businesses in Maryland are very kid friendly– play spaces, restaurants, and services for kids and families.
One of the best things about living and playing in Maryland is the diversity of Maryland. There are so many cultures and diversity throughout the greater Maryland community and region. One of the deepest cultural influences though is the African-American community.
To celebrate and amplify Black owned kid friendly businesses in Maryland, I put together this list of businesses that cater to families and kids.
I hope you enjoy this list and continue to celebrate the richness and diversity of the Maryland community!
1. Hyper Kidz
If you asked a group of kids to design the most fun indoor playground they could dream of, they likely would have come up with a place like Hyper Kidz Indoor Playground in Columbia, MD. For real… we have visited Hyper Kidz many times since they opened up (including hosting our daughter’s birthday party there), and we have a blast every time.
Since they first opened a few years ago, Hyper Kidz has expanded to Ashburn, VA and a soon to be opened location in Owings Mills. Want to know more? Check out our review here.
2. Kidz City
Kidz City is a great new indoor place option in Odenton. The playspace is bright and open with numerous play stations like giant LEGO bricks, a basketball court, baby play area, and an indoor playspace city (it’s super adorable). Kidz City is available for open play and birthday parties!
The tagline of this fun indoor adventure playspace in Columbia, MD is “where fitness meets fun.’ It’s a whole bunch of climbing, jumping, and obstacle courses. Activities for a wide age range include Ninja Warrior Obstacle Course, Extreme Dodge ball, climbing walls,
Club Lab Rascals is a super new and fun concept that parents everywhere will LOVE (and so will kids). They hold super fun virtual STEM camps. Everything is online and geared towards getting kids excited about learning anything to do with STEM!
From their Facebook page, “We are a children’s enrichment facility that hosts after-school classes, homeschool, preschool camps, birthday parties, and other events using STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) themes. Serving Montgomery, Baltimore, and Howard Counties in Maryland.”
This business comes with rave reviews from both parents and kids!
This adorable business specializes in hosting children’s tea parties for all occasions. The idea was inspired by the owner’s three daughters, who loved dressing up like princesses and hosting imaginary tea parties with their toys. They specialize in both kid-only events and Mommy and Me events.
This community organization is based in North Bethesda and aims to inspire, enrich, educate, and empower artists and audiences in an effort to advance the reach of Urban Art, while preserving it’s rich culture. Their programs focus on providing engaging, educational programming for youth and adults focused in the elements of Hip Hop (B-Boying/B-Girling, MCing, DJing, and Graffiti).
8. Kid CarGo
I love the concept of this business. Based in Salisbury, MD, Kid CarGo provides safe and reliable transportation for kids in and around Salisbury, MD who need transportation. Their motto is, ‘You have the kid, we have the Car, LET’S GO!’
Ok, so I will be the first to tell you that when you see these desserts you will literally start drooling. Cakelady Desserts is a bakery and cupcakery based in Lanham, MD. Every dessert is made to order. They offer a variety of cheesecakes, cupcakes, jar cakes, brownies, cookies, photocakes and more. You have to check out their kid cakes. Wow!
10. Minty’s Place
Minty’s Place is definitely a Cambridge, MD institution and it has an amazing story. From their website, “A family-friendly restaurant in historic Cambridge, Minty’s Place is located where Hyser’s used to be — 824 Locust Street. The building was purchased, renovated, and renamed in honor of Araminta “Minty” Ross, later known as Harriet Tubman, who was born in Dorchester County. (Araminta did not take the name “Harriet” until she married John Tubman.)”
Their amazing restaurant uses fresh ingredients from local markets, Southern barbecue, and even ice cream!
A fantastic way to make this meal into a fantastic day trip would be to visit one of the many Harriet Tubman cultural sites before and after your meal!
There are two reasons that will stand out for why you want to take your kids to this awesome restaurant in Frederick, MD. Breakfast for dinner AND every meal ends with a cupcake! How awesome is that? There is a full menu of gourmet cupcake flavors, gourmet sweet and savory waffles, and even funnel cake fries.
Ice+Custard=Happiness. Rita’s is a very popular Maryland ice cream (or rather custard) institution. Not every location in owned by a person of color, but these locations definitely are:
- Windsor Mill
This is a national chain with two locations in Annapolis and Baltimore. You are not going to be able to decide if you want to indulge in a gourmet cupcake, or a nice tasty cup of gourmet ice cream. Either way, your taste buds will thank you!
15. Porter Soul Food
Southern recipes. Soul food. Another Cambridge, MD institution. The food is amazing (your kids will go crazy for the Mac ‘N Cheese) and the owners are not only pillars of the community.. but incredibly welcoming to visitors. The service at this institution is beyond fantastic!
Another family friendly restaurant in Frederick, MD. Their menu selections are born from the wide variety of flavor of the Caribbean Islands. Their specialties include Jerk Chicken, fried plantain, and macaroni and cheese.
17. Love, Puddin’
What’s not to love about this mobile dessert van that does custom orders.. and everything is so sweet and sooo good!
