Armor of God Bible Class Crafts for Kids: Dog Tags

Here is your mission if you choose to accept it: Teach 10, 8 to 9 year old girls about the Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) over the course of a week in a church camp or VBS setting. How do you make the Armor of God fun for the girls and still teach the rather complex concepts of spiritual warfare. Well, that was my mission this summer. Check back here over the next week or so as I share the Armor of God Bible Class Crafts for Kids and Armor of God activities that we did. Of course, if you are talking about spiritual warfare and the armor of God, there is no better place to start that dog tags. Read on to see how quick and easy these were to make.

Armor of God Bible Class Crafts for Kids: Dog Tags

I decided a fun introduction to the week and the concept of spiritual warfare would be to make dog tags. While the kids are making them, you can talk about basic concepts such as how a Christian’s name is written in the book of life, how important it is for a Soldier to have identification and vital information on the dog tags, etc.. Plus, it is a good way to learn the kid’s names! We made ‘feminine’ dog tags but you could easily make more traditional looking dog tags, or have a mix to suit multiple preferences.

Materials Needed

  • cardboard
  • black sharpie
  • handheld hole punch
  • Washi tape– many varieties
  • markers
  • string, twine, or yarn
  • scissors
  • cardstock
  • double-sided tape or tape runner

How to Make the Dog Tags: Pre-craft prep

  • Trace a fat oval shape onto the cardboard with the sharpie. This doesn’t have to be an exact science. I didn’t even use a template. Just make sure your ‘dog tag’ will have room for the name part of the dog tag.
  • Punch a hole about 1/2″ from the edge of one end.
  • Cut out a slim rectangle from the cardstock. I chose two colors of cardstock and cut enough that each kid could pick the color they wanted. This will be where the kid’s write their name, so make it big enough for that, but small enough to fit on the cardboard tag.
  • Gather up the twine/yarn, cardstock, markers, washi tape, double-sided tape, and enough pairs of scissors so the kids aren’t fighting over them.

How to Make the Dog Tags Part II

  • I scored some great deals on washi tape at a recent craft show so this wasn’t a big issue– but have a variety of washi tape on hand to suit the preferences of the kids. They are essentially designing their own dog tag. They need to cut a rather long piece of washi tape and then wrap it around the cardboard until the cardboard is covered (or mostly covered).
  • Feed the yard/twine through the hole and tie it off to form a dog tag chain.
  • The kids can decorate the name plate with the markers. They can decorate the name plate first and then stick it on the washi tape-covered dog tag with double-sided tape. Or, they can sick the name plate on the dog tag and then decorate it. It really doesn’t matter.

There you go. Isn’t that an easy craft?
