Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay

Is Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay worth visiting? Here’s what to expect, how long to spend, what you’ll see, and tips for visiting with kids or teens.

Estimated reading time: 21 minutes

Is Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay the biggest aquarium I’ve ever visited? No.

Is it going to compete with somewhere like the Monterey Bay Aquarium or the National Aquarium in Baltimore? Also no.

But here’s the thing: it kind of doesn’t have to.

Because Shark Reef Aquarium is located inside a Las Vegas hotel.

And for an aquarium that is literally inside a resort on the Las Vegas Strip, it is surprisingly impressive.

Actually, I would go a step further than that. Shark Reef Aquarium is not just “good for a hotel aquarium.” It is a legitimately good aquarium.

There are enough exhibits, enough different kinds of animals, and enough of those big immersive viewing areas that it feels like a real standalone attraction instead of something Mandalay Bay threw together to give families something to do between meals and the pool.

And honestly, that surprised me.

We have been to a lot of aquariums over the years, including some really excellent ones, so I went into Shark Reef with pretty realistic expectations.

I figured it would be fun.

I didn’t necessarily expect it to be this substantial.

But it absolutely was.

You’ll see sharks swimming overhead, massive rays gliding through the water, sea turtles, jellyfish, tropical fish, reptiles, an octopus, touch pools, and some really immersive underwater viewing areas.

And because it is located right at Mandalay Bay, it is also incredibly easy to work into a Las Vegas itinerary.

If you’re visiting Las Vegas with kids or teens, this is one of those attractions I would definitely put on your list.

And if you are visiting Las Vegas and you’re just not that interested in gambling, Shark Reef Aquarium is also a really good option.

Is Shark Reef Aquarium Worth It?

Yes. I think it is.

With one caveat.

Do not go into Shark Reef expecting a massive, all-day aquarium experience.

This is not the kind of place where you are going to arrive at 9 AM, eat lunch there, spend another four hours wandering around, and leave at closing.

That is not what Shark Reef is.

I would plan on spending about an hour here.

Maybe an hour and a half.

If you have younger kids who want to stop at every single exhibit, spend a lot of time at the touch pool, or just stand and watch the sharks swim around forever, you could probably stretch it closer to two hours.

But for most people, I think an hour or so is probably about right.

And honestly, I kind of like that.

Las Vegas can be exhausting.

Everything is huge.

Everything takes longer than you think it is going to take.

Even walking from one side of a resort to another can feel like you accidentally signed up for a 5K.

So having an attraction that is genuinely fun and interesting but doesn’t take up your entire day is actually pretty perfect.

You could visit Shark Reef Aquarium in the morning, grab lunch at Mandalay Bay, and still have most of the day left for something else.

What Is Shark Reef Aquarium?

Shark Reef Aquarium is located inside Mandalay Bay Resort on the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip.

And Mandalay Bay is massive.

I cannot emphasize this enough.

If you are staying there, you will quickly realize that there are entire sections of the resort that feel like they are in different zip codes.

The aquarium is located toward the convention center side of the property rather than right near the hotel room elevators and casino.

So if you are staying at Mandalay Bay, give yourself more walking time than you think you need.

If you are coming in from another hotel, just know that once you get to Mandalay Bay, you still have some walking to do before you actually arrive at the aquarium.

But once you get there, the experience is really well done.

The aquarium has a surprising variety of animals.

There are tropical fish exhibits, jellyfish, sharks, rays, sea turtles, reptiles, and other aquatic wildlife.

We also saw a large monitor-type reptile exhibit near the beginning of the aquarium, which immediately made it clear that Shark Reef was going to be more than just a hallway of fish tanks.

And then once you get farther inside, the exhibits become more immersive.

There are large viewing windows.

And tunnel-style sections where sharks and rays swim over your head.

There are big, open underwater views where you can just stop and watch the animals move through the tank.

That part was especially cool.

Because when you have a shark swimming directly over your head, or a huge ray gliding past the glass, you stop thinking, “Oh, this is an aquarium inside a hotel.”

You’re just having a really good aquarium experience.

The Underwater Tunnels Are One of the Best Parts

If you only remember one thing about Shark Reef Aquarium, it will probably be the underwater viewing areas.

These were easily some of my favorite parts of the experience.

You walk through curved tunnel sections with water above and around you, and the sharks, rays, and fish swim directly overhead.

And some of these animals are big.

Very big.

There is something especially cool about looking straight up and seeing a shark pass over you.

We also saw large rays and other fish gliding across the top of the tunnel.

It gives you that immersive aquarium feeling that I honestly wasn’t sure we were going to get here.

And this is where Shark Reef really exceeded my expectations.

It doesn’t feel like a tiny hotel attraction.

It feels like an aquarium.

We happened to see aquarium staff working inside one of the exhibits while we were there, too, which was fun to watch.

Obviously, that is not something I would expect every visitor to see, but it added another interesting moment to our visit.

There Is a Lot More Than Sharks

Despite the name, Shark Reef Aquarium is definitely not just about sharks.

The sharks are obviously a major draw.

And they are impressive.

But there was actually a much wider variety of animals than I expected.

We saw jellyfish, tropical fish, sea turtles, rays, reptiles, and an octopus.

And let me tell you something about aquarium octopuses.

Normally, you go to an aquarium, find the octopus exhibit, stare at an empty-looking tank for five minutes, and eventually convince yourself that one slightly suspicious rock might be the octopus.

Not this time.

We could actually see the octopus.

Like, really see it.

Its arms were stretched out where we could watch it move around the exhibit, and it ended up being one of the coolest things we saw.

Maybe we just got lucky.

I don’t know.

But I was impressed.

The jellyfish exhibit was also beautiful.

There were several large jellyfish floating around in the tank, and with the lighting, it was one of those exhibits where you could just stand there and watch for a while.

And then there were the turtles.

I always love sea turtles at aquariums, but there is something especially cool about seeing one swimming above you.

Between the sharks, rays, turtles, jellyfish, octopus, and all of the colorful fish, there was honestly a lot more variety here than I expected.

And that is probably the biggest reason I came away thinking Shark Reef Aquarium was worth the visit.

The Touch Pool Is a Great Stop for Kids

One of the more interactive parts of Shark Reef Aquarium is the touch pool.

And this is definitely one of those areas that families with younger kids will probably want to spend a little more time at.

When we visited, there were rays in the touch pool, and kids could lean over the edge and gently touch them as they swam by.

It is a simple thing, but kids love this kind of experience.

And honestly, it helps break up the visit a little bit.

You are not just walking from one aquarium window to another. There are a few places where you can stop and engage a little more.

If you are visiting with kids, I would absolutely plan on spending a little extra time here.

Is Shark Reef Aquarium Good for Kids and Teens?

Yes.

Actually, I think Shark Reef Aquarium works really well for both.

For younger kids, you have the obvious appeal of sharks, stingrays, jellyfish, turtles, tropical fish, and the touch pool.

For teens, I think the immersive shark tanks and underwater tunnels are what make it fun.

This is not an aquarium that feels babyish.

The large tanks are dramatic enough that older kids and teens are still going to think it is cool.

And honestly, if you are building a Las Vegas itinerary for a family, that matters.

Las Vegas can be a little awkward with kids because so many attractions are either clearly geared toward adults or clearly geared toward very young children.

Shark Reef lands in a nice middle ground.

It works for elementary-aged kids, tween, and even teens.

And it works for adults who just like aquariums.

That is a pretty useful combination.

How Long Should You Spend at Shark Reef Aquarium?

I would plan on about an hour.

That is probably the sweet spot for most visitors.

If you move fairly quickly and do not stop at every exhibit for long, you could probably finish in less time.

If you have younger kids, stop at the touch pool, spend a while watching the sharks, or just really enjoy aquariums, you could easily spend an hour and a half or even two hours.

But I would not plan half a day around it.

This is more of a morning activity or a nice break in the middle of your Las Vegas itinerary.

And again, that is one of the things I actually like about it.

You get a real attraction without committing your entire day.

Buy Tickets Ahead of Time

I highly recommend buying tickets online before you go.

Shark Reef Aquarium uses timed entry, and that just makes the whole experience easier.

Las Vegas is busy.

And the last thing I want to do when I am traveling is show up somewhere and find out that the next available entry is two hours away.

So I would pick your time in advance and build the rest of your day around it.

I also like timed entry because it helps control the flow of people through the aquarium.

The exhibits still get busy, especially around the larger viewing areas, but it helps prevent the whole experience from becoming completely packed.

As always, check current pricing and hours before your visit because those can change.

Is Shark Reef Aquarium Stroller-Friendly?

Based on our experience, yes.

I saw plenty of families with strollers, and the pathways felt wide enough to navigate comfortably.

The aquarium is mostly flat and easy to walk through.

You are not dealing with hiking trails, stairs everywhere, or anything especially strenuous.

So if you are visiting with younger kids, Shark Reef is a pretty easy attraction from a logistics standpoint.

And that is another reason I think it works so well for families.

You can have a genuinely fun experience without exhausting everyone before lunch.

Where Is Shark Reef Aquarium Inside Mandalay Bay?

This is probably the most important practical tip I can give you.

Mandalay Bay is huge.

Like, ridiculously huge.

If you are staying at the resort, do not assume that Shark Reef Aquarium is going to be right next to the lobby or casino.

It is located closer to the convention center side of the property.

So depending on where you are coming from, you may have a pretty decent walk.

And when I say “pretty decent walk,” I mean Las Vegas resort walk.

Which means what looks close on a map can still somehow take 10 or 15 minutes.

So give yourself extra time.

Do not schedule your aquarium entry for 10:00 AM and start walking from the opposite end of Mandalay Bay at 9:58.

You will regret that decision.

Can You Use the Tram to Get to Mandalay Bay?

Yes, there is a tram that connects Mandalay Bay with Luxor and Excalibur.

So if you are staying somewhere farther north on the Strip, that can sometimes make getting to Mandalay Bay a little easier depending on where you are coming from.

Once you arrive at Mandalay Bay, though, you still need to walk through the resort to reach Shark Reef Aquarium.

So again: budget more walking time than you think you need.

That is basically a universal Las Vegas rule.

Where Should You Eat Near Shark Reef Aquarium?

If you are not staying at Mandalay Bay, I would not necessarily trek all the way across the resort just to find one of the nicer restaurants after your aquarium visit.

There are plenty of convenient food options much closer to Shark Reef.

The Mandalay Bay food court is located near the aquarium and convention center area.

And honestly, that is probably the easiest option for families.

You can grab something quick without turning lunch into another major production.

Depending on what is open when you visit, you may find options like burgers, pizza, sandwiches, hot dogs, and other casual food.

That makes Shark Reef Aquarium very easy to turn into a simple morning plan.

Visit the aquarium.

Spend an hour or so inside.

Grab lunch nearby.

And then move on to your next Las Vegas adventure.

Shark Reef Aquarium Is a Great Non-Gambling Las Vegas Activity

One of the biggest reasons I recommend Shark Reef Aquarium is that it gives you something genuinely fun to do in Las Vegas that has absolutely nothing to do with gambling.

And there are a lot of people who visit Las Vegas who do not gamble.

Maybe you are visiting with kids or you are flying into Las Vegas before a National Parks road trip.

Maybe you are here for a concert or convention.

Or perhaps you just do not care about casinos.

Whatever the reason, Shark Reef Aquarium is one of those attractions that helps prove there is a lot more to Las Vegas than gambling.

It is easy, interesting, and works for a wide range of age groups.

And it does not take up your entire day.

That makes it a pretty easy yes for me.

Tips for Visiting Shark Reef Aquarium

A few things will make your visit easier.

First, buy your tickets ahead of time.

Second, give yourself more time than you think you need to actually get to the aquarium once you arrive at Mandalay Bay. The resort is enormous, and the aquarium is not sitting right next to the main hotel entrance.

Third, do not rush through the large shark tanks.

This is where the experience really shines.

The temptation at an aquarium is to keep moving because there is always another exhibit around the corner. But some of my favorite moments at Shark Reef came from just standing there for a few minutes and watching.

The sharks circle back around.

The rays glide overhead.

The sea turtles eventually come into view.

And sometimes you get lucky and the octopus decides to actually show itself.

So while this is not a huge aquarium, I would still slow down and enjoy it.

I would also try to visit earlier in the day if your schedule allows.

Not because I think you absolutely have to, but because I generally prefer attractions like this before the day gets really busy.

And Las Vegas gets busy.

Very busy.

Who Will Like Shark Reef Aquarium the Most?

I think Shark Reef Aquarium is especially good for a few types of visitors.

Families with kids.

Families with teens.

Anyone staying at Mandalay Bay.

Anyone who likes aquariums.

And anyone looking for something to do in Las Vegas that does not involve gambling.

It is also a nice option if you have a little extra time before checking into your hotel, after checking out, or between bigger activities.

Because it does not take all day, it is easy to fit into a larger itinerary.

And if you are already staying at Mandalay Bay, this is almost a no-brainer.

You are already there.

You might as well take advantage of having a legitimately good aquarium right inside your resort.

Who Might Want to Skip Shark Reef Aquarium?

If you are visiting Las Vegas for a very short amount of time and you are trying to prioritize only the biggest, most iconic experiences, Shark Reef may not make the cut.

If you only have one day in Las Vegas and your list includes the Sphere, Bellagio fountains, Fremont Street, Area15, and a show, I would not tell you to drop everything for the aquarium.

It depends on what you enjoy.

And if you have recently visited one of the major destination aquariums and are expecting something on that scale, you may be underwhelmed.

Again, this is not Monterey Bay.

It is not the National Aquarium.

It is not trying to be.

But I think that is an important distinction.

There is a difference between saying, “This is not one of the biggest aquariums in the country,” and saying, “This aquarium is not worth visiting.”

Those are not the same thing.

Shark Reef is absolutely worth visiting for the right traveler.

Is Shark Reef Aquarium Worth the Price?

For us, yes.

The biggest reason is that the experience felt substantial enough to justify doing it as a standalone attraction.

We did not walk out thinking, “That was it?”

There was enough variety and enough impressive wildlife to make the visit feel worthwhile.

The sharks were obviously the highlight.

But the rays, sea turtles, jellyfish, reptiles, tropical fish, touch pool, and octopus all made the aquarium feel more complete.

And the large viewing areas really helped.

If the aquarium had been nothing but a series of small tanks along a hallway, I would probably have a very different opinion.

But the underwater tunnels and massive viewing windows give Shark Reef that immersive feeling that makes an aquarium fun.

That is what pushed it over the line for me.

Would We Visit Shark Reef Aquarium Again?

Yes.

Especially if we were staying at Mandalay Bay again or visiting Las Vegas with kids or teens.

I do not know that I would make a special trip to Las Vegas solely for Shark Reef Aquarium.

But that is not really the point.

The point is that if you are already in Las Vegas, this is a genuinely good attraction to add to your itinerary.

And if you are already at Mandalay Bay, it is even easier to recommend.

I would absolutely go back.

There is enough movement and variety in an aquarium that every visit is a little bit different anyway.

Maybe next time the octopus will be hiding.

Or a shark will swim directly over us.

That is part of the fun.

Final Thoughts: Is Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay Worth Visiting?

Yes.

Just go in with the right expectations.

Shark Reef Aquarium is not one of the giant destination aquariums where you should plan your entire day around it.

But it is a surprisingly good aquarium with a wide variety of animals and some genuinely impressive exhibits.

The underwater tunnels are fun.

The shark tanks are excellent.

The rays and sea turtles swimming overhead are incredibly cool.

The jellyfish are beautiful.

The octopus was one of my favorite surprises.

And the touch pool makes it especially good for families.

I went in expecting a decent little hotel attraction.

I walked out thinking it was a legitimately good aquarium.

That is a pretty big difference.

So if you are visiting Las Vegas with kids, teens, or anyone who loves marine life, I would put Shark Reef Aquarium on your list.

And if you are staying at Mandalay Bay?

Definitely go.

It is one of the easiest and most interesting things you can do without ever leaving the resort.

More Fun Things to Do in Las Vegas

If you are looking for more fun things to do in Las Vegas beyond the casinos, there are plenty of options.

For something completely different and wonderfully weird, check out Omega Mart at AREA15. It is colorful, immersive, interactive, and one of the most unique attractions we have done in Las Vegas.

If you want something more low-key and nostalgic, the Pinball Hall of Fame is a great stop. It is inexpensive, casual, and packed with vintage pinball machines and arcade games.

For a big, flashy Las Vegas experience, the Sphere and The Wizard of Oz is in a completely different category. The technology alone makes it worth seeing, and it is one of those experiences that really feels like something you can only do in Las Vegas.

And if you are ready to get away from the Strip for a while, Valley of Fire State Park is an easy day trip from Las Vegas. The red rock scenery is gorgeous, and it is a great way to add a little outdoor adventure to your trip.
