Deep Creek Lake State Park is a great spot to visit if you’re spending time around Deep Creek Lake with kids.

The lake is beautiful, but much of the shoreline along Deep Creek is made up of private homes and vacation rentals. As an answer to that, Deep Creek Lake State Park offers public access where you can enjoy the water.

This park offers beaches, hiking trails, playgrounds, a great nature center, and an aviary full of birds of prey. Since most of these attractions are all located pretty close together, it makes visiting the park fairly convenient.

We’ve visited numerous times throughout the spring and fall and all of the visits were slightly different.

Each time though, Deep Creek Lake State Park has been one of our favorite places to visit near Deep Creek Lake.

Deep Creek Lake State Park Beach

The beach is really the main reason most people visit Deep Creek Lake State Park.

It’s one of the only public swimming beaches around Deep Creek Lake and it’s beautiful.

We visited Deep Creek Lake State Park once around the beginning of June.

The water was beautiful and extremely clear, but it was also freezing. So freezing that no one was swimming. Granted, we did eventually take off our shoes and venture into the lake to cool off our feet.

Standing there looking out at Deep Creek Lake with all the mountains surrounding it was breathtaking.

The water has to be gorgeous in the middle of summer when it warms up. I can only imagine how incredible it would be to take a dip in July or August.

It really is beautiful even when the water is too cold for swimming.

the Park Shines in the Fall

We stopped by Deep Creek Lake State Park one day in the fall (mid-October) and honestly, it might be my favorite time to visit.

The park was practically empty which made it so relaxing to be there.

Don’t get me wrong, it can be busy at times. We’ve been there during the summer when it was packed with people. But if you want to visit when it’s quiet, plan a trip in the fall.

Plus, the fall colors.

Deep Creek Lake takes full advantage of Mother Nature’s fall foliage palette. Bright reds, oranges, and yellows cover the trees that line the hills surrounding Deep Creek Lake.

Walking through Deep Creek Lake State Park with all those colors reflecting off the water was one of the most beautiful places we’ve seen in Maryland during the fall.

Seriously, if you’re looking for a quieter spot to see fall colors, add this park to your list.

The Discovery Center

Deep Creek Lake State Park has a great nature center called the Discovery Center.

We’ve been to a lot of park nature centers over the years. Some are ok, but Deep Creek Lake State Park takes it to the next level.

The Discovery Center has tons of hands-on exhibits for kids to learn about the wildlife and different ecosystems found around Deep Creek Lake.

Children can touch animal skins, explore animal bones and skulls, and learn about different animals that live in the forests around the lake.

Inside the Discovery Center they even have a few live animals.

My daughter and her friend absolutely loved the turtles.

The kids could have stayed here all day learning about and exploring the different animals.

Don’t Forget about the playgrounds!

Deep Creek Lake State Park has three playgrounds.

Two of them are right near the beach areas of the park.

But my favorite is the one right next to the Discovery Center. It’s larger than the other two and offers more for kids to do.

It works well with the Discovery Center since kids can go inside and learn about all the animals in the museum then go right outside and play at the playground.

It’s a great combo that makes this state park a fun stop for families.

Birds of Prey Aviary

Just outside the Discovery Center was another unexpected surprise.

This is a great aviary!

This aviary is home to birds of prey that are no longer able to survive in the wild.

We had no idea this was here, but was really impressed once we saw it.

The eagles were the highlight for me. Seeing them up close was pretty cool. Eagles are big birds. You know they’re big when you see them, but when you’re right there eye to eye with one you realize how majestic they truly are.

It only took us a few minutes to check this out, but it’s worth doing after you visit the Discovery Center.

Hiking Trails at the park

If you’re looking to get out and stretch your legs you’ll find several hiking trails at Deep Creek Lake State Park.

A few of the trails follow along the lake shoreline while others wind through the forests surrounding the park.

The trails are fairly easy which makes them great for families. Taking a little hike gives you some great views of Deep Creek Lake peeking through the trees.

What Families Love

Deep Creek Lake State Park has a little something for everyone.

From the Discovery Center, aviary, beaches, and playgrounds there’s lots to do at this park with kids.

And it’s all located pretty close together.

It makes for a great stop if you’re spending time around Deep Creek Lake and want to see what the lake has to offer without staying at a lakefront rental.

You can spend the whole day here if you want. But it can also make for a perfect half-day excursion.

Final Thoughts

Deep Creek Lake State Park offers great ways for kids to have fun outdoors.

Between the beaches, nature center, aviary full of birds of prey, and playgrounds this is such a fun place to explore with your kids.

Oh yeah, and if you visit in the fall plan on taking a hike around the park to check out the foliage. It’s one of the best parts about visiting Deep Creek Lake State Park during the fall season.
