What you will need:

  • two paper plates (one for each animal)

  • Brown yarn (for the lion’s mane)
  • Black sharpie marker
  • 2 big’ish googly eyes (not the biggest you have ever seen, but big enough to look proportional)
  • 2 medium-sized Googly Eyes

  • 1 Black foam sheet (for the sheep’s head and legs, and the lion’s ears)
  • 1 small piece of orange-yellow felt (for the lion’s ears)

This craft it really easy to make, but it does take a little time. We actually created these puppets in stages over 2 to3 days. Each stage took about 10 to 15 minutes (including set up and clean up), making this a very doable craft for after school or on a week night.

Making the Lamb

  1.  I wanted Sweet Pea to create as much of this as possible on her own (she is 2 years old). So, I emptied craft glue into a bowl and let her ‘paint’ the glue onto the paper plate.
  2. After we spread the glue on the plate, it was time to stick the cotton balls on. This was the fun part. Sweet Pea did a very good job of sticking cotton balls all over the plate. However, she did lose interest (common theme) and I ended up finishing the task. More fun for Mommy!
  3. Sweet Pea is too young to really have mastered any scissor skills yet, so I cut out the lamb’s head and legs from a sheet of black foam. We stuck the legs onto the back of the paper plate and liberally applied glue to the back of the lamb’s head before positioning it on top of the cotton ball body.
  4. Sweet Pea loves googly eyes and pom poms, so this step was fun for her (and great fine motor skills practice!). I squeezed the glue onto the lamb head and Sweet Pea stuck on the eyes and nose.
  5. At this point, the paper plate lamb is heavy and wet from all the glue. I set it aside to dry and glued the craft stick to the back of the paper plate after the rest of the lamb dried.

Making the Lion (Rarrrr!)

  1. We made the Lion puppet on a different day but it was just as easy and just as much fun as the lamb!
  2. Sweet Pea did a great job of painting the paper plate orange. I helped ensure she covered the entire plate, but seriously, she had a blast with the paint!
  3. This was definitely a 2-part craft as it would not be wise to glue the main onto the lion before the paint dried.
  4. While waiting for the paint to dry, cut the brown (or preferred color) yarn into manageable strips. Honestly, I just grabbed a handful of yarn and cut 20+ strands at a time. It was faster that way.
  5. After the orange paint dried, I spread a generous amount of glue around the edge of the plate, where the lion mane would be. Sweet Pea then stuck the brown yard onto the glued part of the plate for the mane.
  6. I dabbed glue onto the plate and Sweet Pea stuck on the large googly eyes.
  7. Since Sweet Pea is still a bit young, I finished the lion puppet by cutting out two pieces of black foam for the ears. I then cut out two, slightly smaller, pieces of yellow-orange felt (you could use any material you want though), glued the two parts of the ear together, and then glued each ear to the back of the lion’s head (aka, the paper plate).
  8. I drew the nose and whiskers on with the black sharpie.
  9. As with the lamb puppet, the last step is to glue the craft stick onto the back of the paper plate.

And there you have it- Lion and Lamb Paper Plate Puppets. Aren’t they cute?
