Witches Brew Science Experiment With Kids

Would you like a great way to get your kids excited about STEM this Halloween? This Witches Brew Science Experiment is sure to be a hit!

Double double, toil, and trouble. Halloween is such a fun holiday for kids because it really ignites their imagination. One of the most quintessential Halloween characters is, of course, the witch. You can just imagine the witch in the middle of the forest, mixing up her potions and witches brew.

Only you don’t have to just imagine it. You and your kids can actually make some witches brew of your own! This is a fantastic STEM activity to do with your kids and it will totally get them excited about science.. and about Halloween!

The fun thing about this witches brew science experiment is that it is ridiculously easy to create but the effects will have everyone oooh-ing and awe-ing.

  • ½ cup white vinegar for each color
  • ¼ to 1 cup baking soda
  • Food coloring, in various colors (make sure to try purple, green, blue, orange, and red!)
  • Caudron Kettles (you can pick some up from Amazon)
  • Small cups to mix the vinegar and food coloring
  • A spoon for the baking soda
  • Optional: a tray or cookie sheet to contain the mess… because this science experiment will get messy

This witches brew science experiment is totally safe for kids. None of the ingredients are toxic, even if kids somehow end up swallowing some of it. But this activity has a defintie mess factor.. especially if you are doing it with younger kids.

Unless you want stained clothes, I would have kids put on a smock or old clothes before doing this activity.

The Science Behind it!

When you mix baking soda with vinegar, a chemical reaction is created because baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When you mix them the chemical reaction makes CO2. This gas is lighter than air, so it causes the mixture to rise. And then the liquid of the vinegar mixture traps the gas bubbles.. which causes the mixture to bubble and foam over the sides of the contain. And there you have your witches brew!

If you want to add an educational component to this fun activity, you can ask your kids to come up with a theory about what they think will happen before you add the vinegar to the baking soda. Also, the kids can mix up how much baking soda you add to the cauldrons.. or even how much vinegar you pour into the baking soda.
