Baltimore City

1. The Charmery

Three locations including their signature location in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore, this Baltimore ice cream shop serves up amazing ice cream with locally sourced products. Some of their signature offerings include a sundae menu, seasonal ice cream flavors, sodas from scratch, hand-spun milkshakes, and floats with the root beer right from the tap!

2. BMore Licks

Another Baltimore favorite, BMore Licks carries at least 30 flavors of homemade ice cream daily. Flavors are rotated seasonally, but the favorites are always available. They also serve a wide variety of seasonal and special flavor cones. Flavors like: Mocha Oreo, S’mores, Honey Almond, and Red Velvet Cake. Wow.

3. Lucky’s Coffee, Ice Cream, and Candy

If you have visited the Inner Harbor, you have no doubt seen this fun ice cream shop on the corner near the National Aquarium. The serve two brands of hard packed ice cream- Taharka’s Brothers flavors such as Honey Graham, Salty Caramel, and Key Lime Pie, as well as Jack and Jill flavors such as Cotton Candy, Moosetracks, and Sorbet.

5. Taharka Brothers

Taharka Brothers is not just ice cream, it’s a Baltimore institution. You can actually buy Taharka Brothers ice cream at numerous places around the area because they supply many of the other ice cream shops in Maryland. Some of their signature flavors include Honey Graham, Wake and Bake, Caramel Crunch, and Chocolate Love.

6. Jupiter’s Ice Cream

Speaking of Taharka Brothers, this ice cream shop near the Cylburn Arboretum serves their ice cream year round! (This is the former location of Uncle Wiggly’s)

Baltimore County

8. Prigel Family Creamery

One of the stops on the Maryland Ice Cream Trail, this Glen Arm creamery is a must stop for any ice cream lover. The cows that provide the cream for the ice cream are happily munching on grass in the field next to the shop. Bring a picnic and make an afternoon of it!

9. Cottage Cafe

This little ice cream shop in Arbutus, MD is one of our favorites. It serves Hershey’s Ice Cream, sno-balls, and all kind of mouth watering sundaes. The tables inside have checker boards and pieces so you can play games while you eat your sweet treats!

This used to be the Ice Cream Cottage. However, the owners retired and sold it to one of their beloved employees.. and it didn’t miss a beat!

10. Original Hawaiian Island Snowball

Located on Liberty Road between Eldersburg and Randallstown, the main attraction is, of course, Hawaiian style snowballs (in Hawaii they are called Shave Ice). These snowballs feature finely shaved ice and many flavors not available at most snoball stands, including sugar free flavors. They also offer Italian Ice, Gelato, soft serve ice cream, 14 flavors of hand dipped ice cream, sundaes, milkshakes, and floats.

11. Miss Twist Ice cream (store AND Food Truck!)

The store location is in Essex, but Miss Twist also pops up all over the Baltimore Region via food trucks! They offer, chocolate, vanilla, creamsicle, and twist combinations of any of their soft serve flavors. Plus, gobs and gobs of toppings, the Cart Wheel Ice Cream Sandwich, sundaes, and floats.

This family friendly ice cream shop in Dundalk serves Hershey’s Ice Cream, candy, and other yummy treats!

13. The Cow

There are two locations of this ice cream shop- Reisterstown and Westminster. They both have devoted fans! Some of the fan favorites are their vanilla custard, banana splits, and blue raspberry ice.

15. Babas

Babas is part of the amazing Catonsville pizza place, Peace A Pizza. They are owned by the same family and are co-located. Babas serves Hershey’s Ice Cream and you will be super tempted to buy some of their delectable baked goodies while waiting for your scoops. Such a fun place and perfect for families.

Located in Timonium, this ice cream place offers ice cream and many flavors of snoballs. What sets them apart though are their specialty milkshakes and ice cream parfaits. Flavors like the Chocolate Caramel Supreme, Frozen Sunshine Shake, or Berger Cookie Parfait.

A great snowball and ice cream stand in Arbutus. They are known for their snowballs and waffle cones. Ask for the Peanut Butter Monster Milkshake. Oh. My. Word. Other awesome creations include the Tropical Sunset and the Red Velvet Sundae (if you are lucky enough to be there when they carry it!).

20. The Daily Scoop

This Pasadena ice cream institution got more votes for best ice cream ever than pretty much any ice cream shop in Maryland. They offer ice cream, sundaes, malts, banana splits, and ice cream cakes. Customers rave about the fantastic flavor combinations and excellent friendly service. Flavors change daily and include such winners such as Black Bottom Cheese Cake, Cake Batter, Butter Pecan, and Brownie Chip Ice cream Sandwiches, Brooklyn Style Italian Ices, and Rice Krispie Treat Ice cream Sandwiches.

22. The Red Bean

Another great Annapolis ice cream option. The Red Bean has a fun twist (pun intended) on ice cream. You pick a flavor and two mix-in’s, and then they twist it for you. Their ingredients are locally sourced and they make everything daily in house. Some flavor favorites include blackberry green tea, peanut butter oreo, mango rum pineapple, and brownie almond.

23. Storm Bros. Ice Cream Factory

The Storm Brothers in Downtown Annapolis was literally destroyed in a storm in 2003. But the support from the community was so overwhelming they were able to partially reopen just 13 days later. That is a good thing because their ice cream is amazing. Some of their unique flavor combinations include Caramel Cookies and Cream, Blue Panda, and Oatmeal Cookie. They offer sundaes, milkshakes, malts, floats, and ice cream flurries.

24. Kilwin’s Chocolates & Ice Cream

Another great option for Downtown Annapolis. Kilwin’s has delicious flavors such as Chocolate Peanut Butter, Peppermint, and Rum Raisin.

A fantastic place in Glen Burnie to not only get soft serve ice cream, but famous foot long hot dogs and cheesesteaks! They offer fun seasonal milkshakes like Creamy Pineapple and Irish Cookie (Orea and mint).

26. Bruster’s Real Ice Cream

A local’ish chain with numerous locations in Maryland, including this one in Glen Burnie. Their ice cream is super yummy and their sundaes are pure decadence. Check out Peanut Butter Cup and Strawberry Shortcake Sundae.

27. Shady Side Ice Cream

Fans of this soft serve ice cream shop in Shady Side, MD say their soft serve is the best around. Upside down banana splits are also a huge hit!

32. Alex’s Snowcone and Ice Cream

Housed in a cute little red mini barn, Alex’s Snowcone and Ice Cream is more than just an adorable location. They serve Snowcones including signature flavors such as Fireball and Pina Colada. Also, they offer over 26 flavors of hard and soft ice cream, frozen yogurt, nonfat, and no sugar added flavors.

Ellicott City’s hand scooped ice cream spot. Featuring Baltimore’s own Taharka Brothers premium, small-batch ice cream, and Park Ridge Trading Co.’s gourmet additions for flavor combinations as unique as Ellicott City! If you are anywhere near Elkridge or Patapsco State Park Hilton/Avalon area, you MUST make a trip to Cindy’s Soft Serve. This cute little ice cream stand offers the best soft serve, milkshakes, and snowballs.

35. Scoop & Paddle Ice Cream Company

Scoop & Paddle is new to the Maryland ice cream scene and they have set up shop inside the Clarksville Commons (a super cool restaurant concept you have to check out!). One of the owners used to improve recipes for Dean & Deluca, so you know their ice cream is off the wall delicious. Try one of their signature flavors like Rise Up & Shine Coffee or Cranberry Cobbler. Or indulge in a gourmet ice cream sandwich made with their homemade baked cookies. Chocolate and Mint Chip looks particularly amazing.

36. The Meadows Original Frozen Custard

The Meadows original frozen custard or frozen yogurt is a family owned chain with a fantastic family recipe that has basically remained unchanged since the ice cream shop opened over 50 years ago. They serve frozen custard, sundaes, arctic swirls, shakes, gelato, smoothies, Italian ice, and other special treats.

A fantastic soft serve ice cream place in Ellicott City, right on Baltimore National Pike. They serve 12 flavors of ice cream and frozen yogurt, along with numerous flavor bursts.

38. The Duchess

This family-owned hidden gem in Ellicott City has a very loyal following of locals. It really is a blink and you miss it location, tucked between a gas station and a funeral home. They serve amazing sandwiches, but patrons swear their milkshakes are the best in Maryland.

40. EC Diner

This diner in Ellicott City has an expanive menu. But their Crazy Milkshakes are off the hook amazing. These are very similar to the King Milkshakes you can get at Hershey Park and they are massive. Flavors include brownie, Oreo, Bam Bam, and Funfetti.

41. The Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar

The Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar isn’t a new business… but it is new to Maryland. In June they opened their first location in Old Ellicott City and ‘wow’ is the only word to describe their awesomeness. Check out their crazy shakes and sundaes. They even have dairy-free and gluten-free options!

Unusual Company in Old Ellicott City is unusual because they serve amazing Italian gelato and they offer non-dairy options. Their unique store (yes, they also sell great collectibles) is located inside a bank vault. How cool is that?

Ok, if you haven’t indulged in a delicious dessert at the Decadent Dessert Bar in Maple Lawn you are missing out! In addition to every baked dessert imaginable, they also make small batch gelato every day! They rotate through 10 flavors. Delicious!

45. Hovermale’s Tastes Best

A great spot in Fort Washington. Hovermale’s Tastes Best is best known for their banana splits, hot fudge sundaes, and strawberry shortcake.

46. Miller Farms

Miller Farms is a farm in Clinton, MD that hosts pick your own, a farmers market, and fall family fun. They also offer seasonal soft ice cream flavors like apple pie, peach, strawberry, and banana nut.

47. Woodbourne Creamery at Rock Hill Orchard

This amazing stop on Maryland’s Ice Cream Trail makes ice cream that is actually made on their farm. You will probably visit Rock Hill Orchard for pick your own, feeding the calves, or even fall family fun. Don’t leave without indulging in their ice cream though. In my humble opinion, their Black Raspberry is the absolute best flavor ever.

48. Sarah’s Homemade Ice Cream

This Bethesda mother-daughter team began their amazing ice cream operation after Sarah retired in 2018. They specialize in seasonal flavors such as Kenwood’s Cherry Blossom, tea and alcohol-infused flavors, vegan offerings, candy inspired flavors, as well sorbets and sherbets.

49. Carmen’s Italian Ice

Located in Rockville, Carmen’s offers homemade, gourmet Italian Ice in over 60 flavors. It also now offers frozen custard, shakes, and a toppings bar. 50. Jimmie Cone

Ok, make sure you plan your ice cream trip to Jimmie Cone for the 1st or 3rd Saturday night of the month, April through October. This is when you can also enjoy Cruise Night– tons of classic cars on display at Jimmie Cone’s parking lot! Jimmie Cone offers hot fudge cake boats, banana boats, snow balls with ice cream topping, ice cream cones, and gelati.

51. Moorenko’s

Susan Soorenko started Moorenko’s in 2002 so she could serve her kids the best possible ice cream ever. Wow. That’s dedication. Try their signature flavors such as Salted Caramel with Pralines, Cherry Stracciatella, or Honey Lavender. Moorenko’s flagship store is in Silver Spring, but they are starting to open outposts across Maryland. Woo hoo!

The Baked Bear at Pike & Rose in Bethesda takes ice cream sandwiches to a whole new level of deliciousness. You can make your gourmet ice cream sandwich out of freshly baked cookies, brownies (oh. my. word.) or even donuts! Try the Snickerdoodle sandwich covered in hot caramel and hot fudge. We have been in love with Norwood’s ever since we were invited to a birthday party here years ago.. and my daughter helped make ice cream by riding a bike. Their ice cream and other treats are just so yummy. Don’t pass up the Coffee Toffee flavor or some of the seasonal offerings such as Roasted Apple & Riesling Sorbet or Lemon Blueberry.

Hoffman’s has been a landmark ice cream institution in Westminster, MD since 1947. They have a massive menu of delectable flavors including Chocolate Almond, Dreamsicle, and Butterscotch Ripple. Hoffman’s is also quite close to the Christmas Tree Farm Park Playground. Might make a great day trip!

Another fantastic option in Sykesville. Firehouse Creamery serves ice cream from South Mountain Creamery, which is pretty much the best ice cream ever! They also put that awesome ice cream in between homemade cookies for an amazing ice cream sandwich. Yummy!

62. J’s Sweets Rolled Ice Cream

Have you ever tried rolled ice cream? It’s such a fun concept from Thailand and now you can try it out in Westminster. According to the website, “Also known as stir-fried ice cream, Thai rolled ice cream is not scooped out of frozen buckets. Instead its liquid base is poured onto a frozen pan and then chopped, mixed, spread and rolled right in front of you!” Sign me up! You are going to want to try flavor combinations such as This Little Piggy (strawberry, maple syrup, chocolate and bacon. wow), Smore’s, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

This fun ice cream shop used to be an old school.. hence the name, Old School Ice Cream. They serve soft ice cream, flurries, and milkshakes. And they dip the top of their cones in chocolate. Yummy!

64. The Bus Stop

This amazing ice cream stop opened up in spring 2021 and are already a must-visit spot in Carroll County. Formerly known as The Sundae Shack, located at the BEAUTIFUL Spring Meadows Farm! They will still serve their signature Lolipops– ice cream layered with snow ball. Wow. That would be refreshing on a hot Maryland summer day. In the new spot they are also serving massive gourmet milkshakes. They also serve hand dipped Hershey ice cream and soft serve. 66. South Mountain Creamery

Seriously. What’s not to love. South Mountain Creamery doesn’t just make some of the best ice cream in Maryland, but the farm is a destination in and of itself. Either before or after you indulge in their sweet creamy flavors, visit the cows for a milking. Or, head over to the barn and feed the calves. If you make an appointment ahead of time, you can actually feed the calves bottled milk. How awesome is that? As for ice cream, try the pistachio, butter pecan, or salted caramel.

Another fantastic stop on the Maryland Ice Cream Trail, the Rocky Point Creamery is such a fun destination ice cream spot. Check out the chocolate brownie, Reese’s Pieces, or blueberry cheesecake flavors. What’s more, for a few weeks every summer, you can enjoy some sunflowers with your ice cream. And, there is a great John Deere Tractor playground for the kids too!

68. Little Red Barn Ice Cream Cafe

This cute little ice cream shop is located in Jefferson, MD and offers hard packed ice cream, soft serve, sundaes, milkshakes, coffee, sandwiches, soups, and more! 75. Misty Meadow Farm Creamery

This is one of the lesser known stops on the Maryland Ice Cream Trail, but probably only because it is slightly further away than some of the other options. Misty Meadow is located near the MD-PA border and offers amazing ice cream flavors like Red Velvet Cake, Butterfinger, and Chocolate Cake Batter.

But they also have a playground and animals for the kiddos AND in the summer– sunflowers! Woo hoo! Another cool thing that Misty Meadows does– they pick certain names on a weekly basis. If your name (first name) is picked, you get a free scoop of ice cream that week. How awesome is that?!

76. Nutter’s Ice Cream

83. Twisteez Ice Cream

This Cumberland seasonal ice cream spot specializes in milkshakes and flavor burst soft ice cream twists. They have a large menu though. You might want to try their Peanut Butter Pretzel Sundae or Blackberry Sundae.

84. Livvy’s Soft Serve

Livvy’s Soft Serve in Cresaptown is a great ice cream stop in Western MD. Customers rave about the Black Raspberry, Creamsicle, and Butter Pecan flavors. Check out their fun and unique cones like the Unicorn and Monster cones. And the biggest hit seems to be the Cookie Monster Sundae– which apparently is large enough to feed an entire family!

This awesome creamery in Cumberland serves daily home-made frozen custard, sorbet and frozen treats. But the menu gets super inventive with the flavor of the day custard and flavor of the week sundaes. We are talking flavors like Unicorn Fluff, Mounds of Mounds, and Chocolate Cream Pie. Yummy! I bet the students at Frostburg State University absolutely love hanging out at the Frostburg Freeze. I mean, check out some of the sundae’s they offer- Hawaiian Wiggle (pineapple, coconut), Golden Lady (Butterscotch, peanuts), and S’mores Delight. Wow. Another great Deep Creek Lake ice cream option (there are two locations, one is only open seasonally), Katie’s specializes in super unique and yummy sundaes. One of their new concoctions is Froggy- ‘vanilla ice cream with locally sourced maple syrup, maple sugar, a ring of whipped cream and served in a waffle bowl!’- wow. In the fall they serve Pumpkin Pie & Pumpkin Cheesecake Flurries and Pumpkin Pie Milkshakes– enjoy that with your fall foliage! When you see the photos of ice cream treats from Mrs. Moo’s Corner you are going to want to immediately get in your car and drive to Spider Hall Farm in Prince Frederick, MD for an ice cream date! The extreme milkshakes are off the hook amazing.

We stumbled upon this fantastic ice cream shop and deli after wandering through the sunflower mazes at Goldpetal Farms. A super fun day trip would be a visit to the sunflower fields in the morning, ice cream at Chaptico and then head to Point Lookout State Park to go swimming and hang out on the beach!

This fantastic newcomer to the Maryland ice cream scene, The Salted Scoop in Leonardtown is the perfect place to grab a scoop when you are visiting Southern Maryland! They offer ice cream by the scoop (including an amazing looking ice cream flight!), milkshakes, ice cream sandwiches, and sundaes! There are some fan favorite flavors already (they opened in April 2021)… like black raspberry, pistachio, honey lavender, and more. They also offer dairy free sorbet flavors.

105. Broom’s Bloom Dairy

Seriously, Broom’s Bloom Dairy is one of the best places for ice cream in Maryland.. full stop. It’s on the Maryland Ice Cream Trail and is just a super lovely place to indulge your sweet tooth. Check out some of these amazing flavors: Andes Mint, Orange Chocolate Chip, Caramel Cashew, and Blueberry Pomegranate. They also have a full menu of amazing soups, sandwiches, and more. Oh… and in the late summer/early fall, Broom’s Bloom might also have a few sunflowers spreading happiness in their sunflower fields.

106. Keyes Creamery

Keyes Creamery in Aberdeen is another fantastic stop on the Maryland Ice Cream Trail. Their cows are milked twice a day to provide the purest milk available. Then ice cream is created in small batches in order to ensure flavors are fresh and incredibly delicious. Try innovative flavors such as Cow’s Feet (chocolate chip with peanut butter swirl), Chocolate Coconut Almond, or Blueberries and Cream.

107. Jarrettsville Creamery and Deli

We love this Creamery is Jarrettsville. They make their ice cream on site and offer about 24 different flavors at any given time. They also have a super fun menu of specialty sundaes, milkshakes, and floats. You will definitely want to pair your ice cream cone with lunch, as the deli menu is every bit as delicious as the ice cream menu. Plus, you will want to linger in the dining room– they have a juke box! 

And if that wasn’t enough, this awesome ice cream shop is literally a stone’s throw from the famous Clear Meadows Farm Sunflower Fields.

This sweet little farm and creamery in Cordova, MD also serves Vanderwende’s Ice Cream (a fantastic creamery located just over the state line in Delaware). The Creamery rotates 16 flavors daily of Vanderwende’s famous ice cream, including flavors such as Butter Pecan, Peanut Butter Fudge, and Holy Cow.

Be sure to check them out in the fall for their pumpkin patch and field of fun! (note: for 2020, Councell Farms will not be open in the summer but will open for Fall fun in September).

128. Scottish Highland Creamery

Trip Advisor users have voted this Oxford Ice Cream Shop as the best ice cream on the Eastern Shore since 2008. The shop is located on the water.. so that is an added bonus. Their ice cream is made fresh, on site, one gallon at a time. They offer at least 16 varieties daily, but the ice cream flavor combinations are endless.. and very seasonal. Is it Easter?

Dumsers Dairyland is an Ocean City institution. It really is. It is every bit of the Ocean City experience as Dolle’s salt water taffy or Thrashers fries. There are 7 locations in Ocean City, including one at right next to the Inlet parking lot on the Boardwalk and a drive through location further uptown. 142. Justine’s Ice Cream Parlour OC

You know about Justine’s famous wall of shakes. But what about the Titanic Challenge? This is awesome…. and there is no way a mere ice cream mortal could do it. The Titanic Challenge is eight scoops of Justine’s Premium Ice Cream, 6 wet and dry Toppings, 4 “smoke stack” (cake) cones, 4 cherries, and an “Iceberg of Whipped Cream”. Wow. If you can finish this your name goes on their wall. I can’t even. lol.

Kohr Brothers is another Ocean City staple. They specialize in delicous, smooth, creamy frozen custard. The perfect treat for a hot Maryland summer evening.
