The Batman- A Dark But Completely Riveting Telling Of A Superhero Icon

The Batman- A Dark But Completely Riveting Telling Of A Superhero Icon

The Batman is a compelling retelling of the iconic anti-hero. A very dark but completely engrossing film!

I have to say, the timing of The Batman‘s release couldn’t be better. Not only are we coming out of 2 years of pandemic fatigue, social unrest, and more. Now there is a conflict brewing between Ukraine and Russia and it seems like we could use the best anti-hero the fictional world has to offer.

Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman is the complete opposite of the comic-y Batman of the 80’s and 90’s. In 2005 Christian Bale’s Batman took a very dark and sober turn. But The Batman takes the darkness of Batman Begins and intensifies it about 100-fold.

Does a darker Batman work?

It works. It’s almost oppressively intense and dark, but this film is completely riveting. There are no real heroes, except perhaps James Gordon. Even Batman himself is wrapped up in the muddled legacy of his father and Wayne Enterprises. The Batman, assuming this is the first in a series, acts as a sort of awakening. I would assume the rest of this series shows Batman confronting the corruption that starts with Wayne Enterprises, and eventually overcoming.. creating heroes along the way.

But there are no warm fuzzies in this first film.

The Villains

The Riddler is pure evil, but with a social media-frenzied, performative twist. The way his story unfolds is chilling. And he is not the only villain. You have The Penguin, as a mid-level corruption boss. That should tell you about the headspace of this film. Carmine Falcone is the essence of a violent crime boss. And towards the end of the movie, we are treated (aka- scared out of our seats) by the prospect of a Joker more evil than even Heath Ledger’s embodiment of that character. It’s just a teaser… but soooo good.

And those are just the actual villains. One of the reasons The Batman is so dark and intense is that it tackles a corrupt society, corrupt system, and more. It is really an epic for the 21st century. But don’t get me wrong, this Batman is not preachy. Well, except for a little preachiness from Catwoman… but you can excuse her because her back story will blow you away with its sadness.

(L-r) ROBERT PATTINSON as Bruce Wayne, COLIN FARRELL as Oswald Cobblepot/the Penguin and JOHN TURTURRO as Carmine Falcone in Warner Bros. Pictures’ action adventure “THE BATMAN,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne and Batman is brooding, clearly still mourning his parents’ death, and on a mission to be a one-man (bat) justice system. His bat cave is not flashy. He doesn’t have special powers or even any particularly advanced gadgets. His performance is raw, powerful, and incredibly pained.

Final Verdict– Is The Batman good?

This is a long movie, just shy of 3 hours, but you will be glued to your seat the entire time (minus the obligatory potty break in the middle.. lol).

I highly recommend The Batman for a date night or adult night out. If you haven’t been to a movie in a theater since pre-COVID, this is a fantastic choice for your first outing!

Is this movie suitable for kids?

Ummm, no. Not even close. Don’t take your kids. It’s incredibly scary and violent. The opening scene is enough to make me wonder why it wasn’t rated R. Teens could probably handle it, but most kids age 11 and under will seriously have nightmares if they watch this movie. You might actually have nightmares too! It’s that dark!
