Why It’s Important to Tell Family Stories to Your Kids
It’s really so important to tell family stories to your kids. Read on to find out why and easy ways to do just that!
Growing up, my grandparents and my parents used to tell me stories all the time. These ranged from stories about their upbringing all the way to stories about me as a kid.
Hearing stories from my parents was always so fun, and I got to know a small piece of our family history in the process. As time has gone on, it seems like we’ve steered away from the traditional family storytime with our kids. With each generation, the art of telling stories happens less and less, but it’s a crucial part of our family history! Here is why it’s important to tell family stories to your kids.

You won’t be around forever
I know this is a little morbid, but it is the truth! Our kids will likely outlive us, and it’s going to be up to them to pass along our family’s history and stories to the next generation. While it can be fun to tell others about all the fun things you did, it also means that at some point, it will be up to your kids to do the same.
Your kids learn more about where they came from
Your kids likely don’t remember what life was like in their early years. This is one of the reasons why it’s important to share those stories with them! It’s just as important to also share about where their families came from and those personal stories. Great depression era grandparents have unique insights to share, but many of them have already passed on. This is why sharing those stories now becomes your duty as a parent.
It makes the stories more engaging
Your children likely enjoy listening to stories. However, sometimes they can get sidetracked by the same picture books. If you are looking for an entertaining story, tell a family story to your kids! This is a great way to bond and tell them about life before their time! I promise that no matter what the story is, it will be a lot better than the Dr. Seuss book you’ve read to them at least one hundred times.
These stories are usually not written down
This point kind of goes back to what I said earlier about you not being around forever. These stories are not written down anywhere unless your entire family kept a detailed diary of events. If you don’t pass these stories to your children, they are going to be lost forever. Pictures do wonders for going back in time to recall events, but it doesn’t give you the story behind those photos.
Your children can learn about how the family traditions started
By now, you probably have brought with you a few family traditions that you had from your own home. These may have been something small like a Christmas decoration or something large such as how you set the dinner table each night. Regardless of what it is, telling your children the story of how these traditions started can be a fun way to let them learn about the origins of these traditions.
Family stories are an important part of your family history. While you may spend a lot of time working on scrapbooks and photo albums, don’t forget about the stories you might want to pass down to your kids.
