Qtip Foil Painting Activities for Toddlers

There are so many ideas for fantastic painting activities for toddlers. Recently Sweet Pea and I experimented with Qtip foil painting. It was a great sensory art project and ridiculously easy to set up. Most importantly though, we both had a blast.

Materials Needed:

  • piece of cardboard
  • aluminum foil
  • paint in various colors
  • paintbrushes
  • container for the paint (we used an old muffin tin)
  • qtip

Instructions:

  • Wrap the piece of cardboard with aluminum foil. In order to keep the foil in place, I taped in to the cardboard on the back.
  • Set out the paint, paintbrushes and foil/cardboard palette. I used one paintbrush for each color, but it really doesn’t matter.
  • Let your toddler experiment with the paint and basically make a painting mess. Sweet Pea started with paintbrushes but eventually transitioned to painting with her hands. It was great fun!

Once the palette is completely covered with paint, break out the qtips. Demonstrate how to use the qtip to draw pictures and designs in the paint. Sweet Pea really got into it, but of course she wasn’t exactly Picasso. Of course, neither was I. It was fun to create shapes and simple pictures in the foil paint. Our final product wasn’t really ‘hang on the wall’ worthy. However, that was not the point, right? The point was that Sweet Pea was able to have a great art experience and get her hands messy painting.

I think it was a huge success!

What are some of your favorite process art experiences? Have you tried qtip foil painting before? If not, I highly recommend it. From prep to clean-up, the entire activity took less than 20 minutes.
