Onward: A Magical Adventure With An Ooey Gooey Warm Heart

Onward: A Magical Adventure With An Ooey Gooey Warm Heart

Disney shines the brightest when it tells original stories.

Don’t get me wrong, I have LOVED all the remakes, sequels, and live action re-imaginings that have come out recently. I go to movies to be entertained and Disney has really been bringing their family friendly ‘A’ game (imho).

But when they tell original stories, the magic is simply spectacular. And that is essentially my review of Onward, the latest Disney Pixar film.

A Disney Movie For The PArents

Of course, let me just state up front– this movie was not really made for kids. I mean, yes– I am sure there are so many things kids will love. But this film was really made for Mom and Dad– specifically Moms and Dads from Generation X (raising my hand super high!!!).

There are so many fun callbacks to my teenage years, I almost forgot that in this mythical land, unicorns had basically turned into raccoons. Parents, if you bring your kids… it might help to prep them with photos of 80’s technology. They won’t get some of the callbacks… but you will. And that nostalgia alone will put a big smile on your face.

This is a kid friendly film for sure, but in the vein of Inside Out.

OH BROTHERS – In Disney and Pixar’s “Onward,” two teenage elf brothers embark on an extraordinary quest in a van named Guinevere to discover if there is still a little magic left in the world. Featuring Tom Holland as the voice of Ian Lightfoot, and Chris Pratt as the voice of Ian’s older brother, Barley, “Onward” opens in U.S. theaters on March 6, 2020.

The OOey Gooey Warm Heart of the Movie

You will get sucked into the fun.. and boy do they have a ton of fun. You will root for these brothers to fulfill their quest.

And towards the end, you will not be ashamed when your eyes start leaking all over the remnants of the popcorn bucket. They will undoubtedly be happy tears. You will leave the theater smiling, with tears in your eyes.

Because yes, this is that kind of movie. The kind that affirms family bonds, great friends, embracing the life you have, and going on some wicked fun adventures!

BAD DRAGON – In Disney and Pixar’s “Onward,” Ian Lightfoot’s mom has his back—even when his hyperactive pet dragon, Blazey, is misbehaving. Featuring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the voice of Mom, and Tom Holland as the voice of Ian, “Onward” opens in U.S. theaters on March 6, 2020.

Was there anything you didn’t love about this movie?

Meh– I had one minor quibble… (and no, I won’t spoil it for you). The quest these brothers set out on is pretty fantastic, but it is also kind of ‘quirky.’ But in the end the quirkiness also makes both brothers even more lovable.

And really– if the movie centers around the urban sprawl of magical lands of the past, I think a little quirkiness is warranted.

Ultimately, I think this will be a total sleeper hit. But for real, it’s a super fun ride and I highly recommend Onward for the entire family!
