What you will need:

How to make the love bugs!

  • Break apart the plastic eggs. You can make two love bugs out of each half.

  • Assemble the materials:
    • Cut the pipe cleaners into 4-5″ lengths.
    • Cut the end of the foam craft sticks and glue the ends together to form a heart-shaped wing.

  • Put together the love bugs! We started with the eyes and nose. I squeezed glue onto the plastic egg and Sweet Pea stuck on the eyes and nose. Note: go easy on the glue because the eyes and nose will literally slide off the egg. Of course, if you would like to recreate Dali’s Persistence of Memory, then I guess the eyes sliding off the egg wouldn’t be a big deal. However, I imagine your preschooler would prefer something a little less surreal– so modest amounts of glue are in order.

  • Next up, add the antennae. If you notice on cheap plastic eggs, there are two holes at the top and bottom of the egg. This is perfect for making love bug eggs! From inside the egg half, just thread the ends of the pipe cleaner piece through each of the holes and then adjust the pipe cleaner to the two antennae are the same length. Voila, antennae!

  • The last step is to glue the heart-shaped wings to the back of the plastic eggs. You don’t need to be as careful about the glue with the wings as you did with the love bug face. Actually, you may want a little more glue since there is more surface area.
  • Let everything dry and check periodically to ensure the face is still intact.
