The location of the homework command center is the most important element of the space. You’ll need to place the command center in a place that is quiet and calm. This will allow your kids to stay completely focused as they work. Placing a desk in your kid’s room is a great way to create a homework command center.

Other simple places to add a command center in your home are your home office, family room, or dining room. Where ever you decide to create the command center, be sure your kids can be left alone to work without distraction in the space.

Step #2: Organize Their Supplies

homework supplies

Your kid’s homework command center needs to have everything they’ll need to complete their homework. So, the supplies you’ll need in the space will depend on the grade level of your children.

Younger kids may need things like pencils, crayons, markers, and scissors. While older kids will probably need a computer or tablet for research, in addition to a selection of office supplies like pens and highlighters.

After deciding on the supplies your kids will need for their homework, you’ll want a way to keep everything neat and orderly. Attempt to keep the work surface as clear and uncluttered as possible.

Store supplies in drawers using drawer organizers or add a small desk organizer to the top of the work surface to keep items handy. Another easy way to keep things organized in your homework command center is to make use of the wall space above your child’s desk.

Hanging file storage, a cork board, and floating shelves are simple ways to keep the work space clear, while also keeping needed items close at hand.

Step #3: Help Them Stay Organized

In addition to keeping their school supplies organized, your kids are going to need a way to keep their homework organized as they work.

A homework filing system is a great way to help your kids keep their assignments organized. This ensures they get everything finished in a timely manner. Using a hanging filing system or desktop filing bin, add folders for each subject.

Then, your child can add the assignments to each folder and work through them during each homework section. This system is also great for ongoing assignments, like larger projects or research papers, because it allows them to keep the parts of the assignment they’ve completed organized as they work.

Step #4: Include a Calendar

Place a calendar on the desk or wall to keep track of deadlines and tests in an organized manner. When your child sits down to complete their homework, remind them to add new assignment due dates or upcoming tests to the calendar.

They should also check the calendar for upcoming events, reminding them if they need to study for a test or finish up an assignment before heading to school the next day.

Just because this homework station is designed for work doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun decorating the space! Adding functional décor, like a clock or decorative bookends, can make the area a little more fun for your kids.

Inspirational posters are another great way to add some design to the area without distracting from the task at hand.

Step #6: Make it Comfortable

Since you want your kids to make the most of the space, you want to ensure they enjoy their time there as much as possible. Start by adding a comfortable seat to the work space. This will ensure they enjoy sitting at the desk each day.

Add a little comfort to your kid’s work space. Consider placing a pillow for back support and a soft blanket to keep them warm on a chilly afternoon. Making the space a little more comfortable will ensure they’re working at their best. It may make homework time a little more relaxing, too.
