Have a BBQ
Having a BBQ on the 4th of July is one of those traditions that is so old it goes together like bread and butter. That’s why I wanted to put it first on this list, just to get it out of the way before we go on to less obvious ideas. Corn on the Cob, Shrimp Skewers, burgers, hot dogs, tofu… the things you can cook on a grill are endless. You can even do dessert on the grill, but more on that further down.
Get Sparklers and Fireworks
While you’re enjoying the great outdoors with your family and enjoying a tasty BBQ make sure that you’ve stocked up on some sparklers and fireworks for when the sun starts to go down. Be sure that they’re legal in your area and that you’re letting them off a safe distance from your home or anything flammable.

Watch a Concert and Fireworks Show on TV
There are a number of different concert specials that are aired on TV for the fourth of July, and of course, they include fireworks. Be sure to check your local listings to find out when they will be airing for you. Many times local stations will wait until after dinner time to play the concerts so that when it is dark on the screen it will be dark outside as well.
Watch Independence Day
Independence Day is a fantastic, amazingly modern, despite being from the 90s, 4th of July movie. In fact, some may say that it is the best 4th of July movie of all time. I won’t dive into that argument though. If you want to watch a different 4th of July movie or a patriotic movie then go right ahead! This is the best day to do it. If you have a projector you could even show it outside up against the wall of your house.
Have a Red White and Blue Party
Decorate your house in the patriotic colors red white and blue for the 4th of July. But, don’t stop there. Why not make every food you eat, every drink you drink one of those colors too? Stock up on some red and blue food coloring so you can have blue cupcakes, red biscuits, and…well anything else you can think of!

Put on a S’mores Bar
Finally, remember how I mentioned dessert before? Have a Smores bar! Use your BBQ, or your fire pit if you’re lucky enough to have one, and make a space for everyone to make a variety of different s’mores. For some unusual additions try s’mores with Oreos or even Nutella. You could even make them in a waffle cone and wrap the cone in foil. That would allow you to put all sorts of different things in them, like gummy bears.
Play in the water
Have an epic water balloon fight. Or, maybe break out the sprinklers and slip and slide and have a fantastic afternoon cooling off at home! And really, your kids would love this idea the best!
Make a Patriotic Craft
