Camping is one of my favorite vacations to take with my family. I love getting out in the fresh air and exploring campsites all over the country. However, I can still remember my first camping trip as a family and realizing much too late that we didn’t have the right tent.

Depending on the kind of campground you’ll be visiting and even how many people you’ll have in one tent, here are some guides on how to choose the best tent for family camping.

Determine the right size for your family

Tents can be pretty small. When you actually have to sleep in the tent, you’ll realize how little those family size tents can be. If you can find a store that has the tents fully assembled, head inside one and see how your family fits in the tent. This can give you a good idea of the size tent you will need. Also, take into consideration how much space you’ll have in between each person, and if you need additional space for things like backpacks etc. in your tent.

Figure out how easy it is to set up

Not all tents are created equal when it comes to setting them up and taking them down. Some tents are more straightforward to assemble than others, and some might even be able to withstand more because of their set up requirements. If this is your first time using a tent, it might be better to go with a tent with an easier assembly process to make things less stressful for yourself.

Look into additional features and add-ons

Each tent will have its own unique set of features and add-ons that you can purchase or come included with the tent. These can range from rain tarps to blackout screens. Depending on the time of year you will be camping, and where, these are handy features you’ll want to pay attention to.

Think about what things are most important to your family and choose a tent that has those features. Before you load up on a tent with all the features, look and see if they are things you will actually need. Sometimes paying top dollar for a decked-out tent won’t be worth the cost if you camp once per year.

Rent or borrow before you buy

Before you spend any money on a tent, try to rent or borrow one before you buy it. Camping in a tent and looking at a tent are two totally different things! Renting or borrowing a tent can give you the opportunity to figure out what is important to you in a tent, and what features you might want to include in the one you buy.

This can also give you an opportunity to decide how many tents you will need. It might make more sense to have kids in one tent and adults in another. It depends on how large your family is and what kind of privacy you will need.

Hopefully this guide has helped you find the perfect tent for your family to help make your camping experience that much better!
