Fun Things to Do With Kids in Howard County: Play ‘n Learn Playground Superstores

Parents and kids in Howard County, MD are fortunate to have access to a large number of fantastic public playgrounds. When the weather is nice, many of these playgrounds are jam-packed with kids getting their wiggles out. However, what do families do when the weather is not nice? When it is either too cold, or even too hot? The Play ‘N Learn Playground Superstores should be on any parent’s list of Fun Things to Do With Kids in Howard County.

The Play ‘n Learn Playground Superstore is actually a playground and recreation equipment store with locations in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC. However, in addition to selling playground equipment, the store locations in Chantilly, VA and Columbia, MD also offer open play hours and open play birthday parties. The first time I checked out open play was for a birthday party and it was fantastic!

The showroom in Columbia is equipped with three huge trampolines, an indoor basketball court with about 5 basketball hoops, a foosball table, and countless playground sets, each with different fun features for kids to try out. There are swings, slides, climbing walls, and any other feature you might want in your home playground set.

Currently, open play is offered only on weekdays, in 2-hour increments. This seems to be a relatively new (and probably temporary) policy. I took Sweet Pea to open play on a Saturday in February. Here is what you need to know if you go:

  • Open play costs $6 per child age 12 months and up.
  • Reservations are not required for weekday open play. However, when weekend open play is offered, you do need to buy tickets online through the store website. Tickets are limited so that the playground area is not overcrowded.
  • Playground equipment and trampolines are not separated by age. If there are a lot of older kids, parents of younger kids will need to ensure their kids safety, especially on the trampolines.

I have taken Sweet Pea to the Play ‘n Learn Playground Superstore a number of times and she always has a blast. This is such a great idea for when outdoor play is not an option. And who knows? Perhaps you will find the playground of your dreams in the process!
