Would you like a sure fire way to get your kids excited about science and STEM activities? This erupting apple volcanoes experiment will defintely excite them! 

This science experiment is really pretty easy to set up.. it’s not complicated at all. And because it’s such a simple science experiment, your kids will be super surprised when the apples start erupting all over the place. They will really love using different colors to create an apple rainbow eruption. Erupting apple volcanoes are a great experiment to do any time of the year, but especially in fall during Apple Harvest time!

What you will need:

  • 1-2 cups white vinegar (for multiple apples. 1/4 cup per apple)
  • A plastic squeeze bottle (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • Food coloring, if desired
  • 1 apple
  • Melon baller or a sharp knife (if you use a knife, parents or adults should be doing the cutting)
  • Spoon 
  • Tray

How to make these apple volcanos erupt!

  1. Using a melon baller or a knife, remove the core from the apple without removing the bottom so there is a cavity inside the apple. Adults might need to do this step.

  1. Place the apple into a tray (to catch the spills.)

3. Add baking soda to the apple’s cavity. Fill the apple’s cavity to the top with baking soda.

4. If using food coloring, add the food coloring. If you want to experiment with more colors, add different colors of food coloring to the apples.

5. Pour vinegar over the baking soda and watch the eruption. If you are using a squeeze bottle, squeeze the vinegar onto the baking soda and watch the eruption!

6. When the fizzing slows down, add more baking soda and repeat the steps as many times as you wish. You can also add 1-3 drops of each color of food coloring around the baking soda. Pour the vinegar in the center of the apple and watch the different colors start to flow from the apple!
