Going exploring in nature with your young kids has never been so much fun! Check out how adorable this DIY Explorer Set Craft for Kids is! You don’t need a ton of materials and the craft isn’t complicated at all (especially since there is hot glue involved). But wow, doesn’t this look like so much fun for your kids?
They will love setting out in your backyard, on a walk, or at a park.. exploring their environment and collecting specimens to take home and examine later. The felt satchel can be made small or much larger so your kids can hold all their nature treasures that are found.
What will they discover? Fun rocks? Twigs and sticks? Pretty flowers or interesting leaves? Pinecones and acorns?
And making this craft shouldn’t take more than 20 to 30 minutes– regardless of whether Mom is making it for the kids or the kids are helping out too!

What you will need:
- 2 cardboard tubes, or 1 long tube that can be cut in half
- crafting felt in assorted colors including tan, orange, brown, and green (you can buy it in multiple colors like construction paper)
- scissors (make sure they are sharp like these ones)
- hot glue, glue gun (this is an excellent one!)
How to Make the Explorer Set Craft
Binoculars:
- If using toilet paper tubes, you can leave them as is. If using a paper towel tube, cut it evenly into two segments.
2. Start by wrapping each of your cardboard tubes in the tan (or color of your choice) felt. Cut the felt to fit and secure with the hot glue.
- Secure the two rolls together side by side with hot glue.
4. Cut two long strips of felt (about 6 inches each) in a contrasting color. Place the two cardboard tubes together and wrap one strip around the top and one around the bottom. Secure them with the glue.
- Once your glue is dry, your binoculars are ready for use!
Knapsack:
- Cut out two identical rectangles from your tan (or color of your choice) felt. The size of your rectangles will depend on how big you want the knapsack to be.
- Apply a line of hot glue along the side and bottom edges of one of the rectangles. Place the identical piece of felt over it and press. BE SURE you only add glue to 3 sides (2 long and 1 short) so that you have an opening for your bag. OPTIONAL: I stopped my glue an inch or so from the top of the sack so that I could fold the felt over and create extra detail.
- Using your brown and green felt (or colors of your choice) cut out some simple leaves and twigs. We cut out simple ovals and fringed the edges. Glue your twigs and flowers to the front of the sack.
4. Create a small carrying strap by cutting out a thick strip of felt about 4 inches long. Fold the strip over and secure it in a loop between the opening of the sack.
Fill your knapsack with nature samples such as leaves, twigs, rocks, shells, and flowers!
