Ferocious Dinosaur Puppet Craft for Kids!

Dinosaur crafts for kids are great for both boys and girls because seriously, who isn’t fascinated by dinosaurs? Sweet Pea and I had a blast making this little dino over the weekend. A toddler or preschooler could probably not make this craft on their own, but Sweet Pea did actually have a very significant role and we had a great time together.

How to Make the Puppet!

Part One

  1. Before you start painting, you (the adult) will need to use the razor to make two slits in the toilet paper roll. The first slit is near one end of the toilet paper roll, just long enough for the craft stick to poke through. The second slit is actually at the same end, but more of a notched slit that will be for the dinosaur’s razorback edge!
  2. Now to paint! Sweet Pea did all the painting of both the toilet paper roll and the craft stick. I held the toilet paper roll upright for her, and encouraged her to do a thorough paint job… but she did all the painting.
  3. Let the toilet paper roll and craft stick dry. In order to keep the craft stick from drying/adhering to the paper plate, I just placed it on top of the toilet paper roll. That worked well.

Part Two

It doesn’t really matter the order you do most of these steps in. Either way, there will be glue drying involved.

  1. Slide the large craft stick into the slot you previously cut.
  2. Glue googly eyes to the small white pom poms and then glue them to the toilet roll as the eyes. I squeezed the glue but Sweet Pea was able to stick the eyes on. Great fine motor skill activity!
  3. Cut a red dinosaur tongue from the red felt and glue in inside the toilet paper roll as the tongue.
  4. Cut out two small black circles from the black felt and glue them to the front of the toilet paper roll as the dinosaurs flaring nostrils.
  5. Cut the razorback ridge from the green foam sheet. Line the ridge up with the back of the dinosaur’s head (the toilet paper roll) and body (the craft stick) so that it runs the length of the puppet. Slide the top of the ridge into the notched slit previously cut at the end of the toilet paper roll.
  6. Glue the razorback ridge to the craft stick. Let it dry.
  7. Use the hole punch to punch a hole in the razorback ridge at the place you want the puppet’s arms to be.
  8. Thread the green pipe cleaner through the hole, wrap it around the craft stick and thread it through one more time so that the ends are sticking out towards the front of the puppet.
  9. Bend the pipe cleaner to make the T-Rex arms and cut the excess pipe cleaner off.

Voila! Dinosaur Puppet!

So, confessional time. I originally thought this would be a T-Rex Dinosaur. However, I realize that a) there are no teeth, b) T-Rex doesn’t have a razorback ridge. That is a stegosaurus. Oh well, we still had a blast making this puppet and now I get to chase Sweet Pea around the house with it!

Anyway, I hope you like this idea and make a puppet of your own!
